Qualcomm announces Quick Charge 2.0, up to 75% faster charging

If you thought Qualcomm's 40% faster charging time in Quick Charge 1.0 was impressive, wait till you see Quick Charge 2.0. The processor manufacturer today took the wraps off the second-generation of Quick Charge, which will power up smartphones and tablets up to 75% faster than devices that don't have Quick Charge 2.0.

Quick Charge 2.0 is a combined effort of on-device technology (it's either a standalone integrated circuit solution, or built into the power management in the Snapdragon 800 system on a chip), along with the Quick Charge 2.0 wall charger. Qualcomm says that new tech will fit into existing wall charger footprints, so they'll look the same as what's currently available but provide up to 60 watts of power. Quick Charge 2.0 wall chargers aren't expected to be available before 2014, however.

  • Does anyone know if Quick Charge (1.0 or 2.0) works when charging wirelessly?
  • no way IMHO....magnetic field isn't strong enough...and you wouldn't want it to be unless you want your DNA scrambled :-)
  • No way.
  • Is Qualcomm gonna replace batteries dead batteries?
  • Why? Are you assuming they don't know what they're doing? Surely Qualcomm has chemists and engineers on staff who specialize in battery tech. They make devices where battery life is a concern and want them to be power effecient, so you don't think they just guess at that, right? Build something and test? No, unlikely. They can tell you have efficient it will be while it's still equations on a white board.
Similar for this technology. They probably got a team of chemists and engineers in a room and said, "how do we charge faster? Pizza and beer are free till you figure it out."
  • I hope the S4 has this Quick Charge 2.0 technology, I really do!
  • Don't get your hopes up, as the S4 probably will have an Exynos processor and not a Qualcomm one.
  • I thought I read the other day that the Nexus 4 has quick charge 1.0, yet it doesn't charge any faster than my Galaxy Nexus with the 2100mah extended battery. Does it need a specific charger? Even the N4 wireless charger takes 4 hours.
  • I had the GNex and the first thing I notice on my N4 is that it chargers way faster!!!! And I didn't knew about the quick charge just yet!!!!
  • I use a old BB charger on my N4 and it charges pretty quick...hour charge gives me comparatively more than same charger on my GS2
  • Introducing Super Quick Charge 1.0 now available on all phones new and old. Turn off your phones power, place on charger for 15 minutes, power up and use phone.
  • I use my charger from R/C and charge my device at 2C with no issues for those that don't know 2C is 2x the capacity of the battery so a 2000mah battery would be charged at 4 amps giving you a charging time of about 30 mind from zero percent battery life. Any decent lithium based battery today can easily handle a 2C charge good ones can handle up to 8C and above. Plus with the R/C charger I get an extra line of protection as it will automatically shut off when the battery is fully charged
