Motorola expanding into Waterloo, Ontario - BlackBerry's back yard

Motorola moving into Canada's technology triangle

Motorola has announced that they will be opening a new office in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario — the home of BlackBerry. The site is a known hotbed of engineering, and other companies like Square, Intel and Electronic Arts also have a presence in Canada's Technology Triangle.

Motorola looks to open a new engineering office and tap into the area's pool of talent, which has been bolstered by the massive layoffs going on at BlackBerry. Motorola says they have been planning this move for a while, but for the folks with skills and no office to use them in, the timing couldn't be better.

Google already has a small office in Waterloo, and the current Motorola Kitchener-Waterloo office only employs a "handful" of people. They expect to soon begin hiring, and hopefully some great things can be done at the new facility.

  • Perhaps the Moto X will be assembled in Canada too! then we could get the customizations that previously only customers in the States get on At&T?!
Doubtful but just the thought makes me giddy with excitement.
  • canadians dont care where its made
  • I know I do, especially if it means getting the same customization options and 4 day delivery, like in the US.
  • Neither do most of the people in the US but Motorola set up a manufacturing plant here so the custom Moto X can be assembled here and delivered to the new owners in days rather than weeks. Posted via Android Central App
  • Great news for the 4500 that blackberry is laying off. Glad to here more jobs are headed that way.
  • Agreed, it may actually be a promotion for a lot of ex-BBers. I hope they all find reemployment.
  • Great to see Motorola expanding farther into Canada. Specially now that BlackBerry is starting to float belly up. Posted via Android Central App
  • This is awesome news. I was very sad with the news coming from crackberry and the billion dollar write off :/ Poor employees worked so hard to get their degrees, I hope Motorola adjust some of their hiring plans according to this recent bad news.
  • Just agreeing with everyone else here in thinking that this is great news for the area, v pleased to hear it Posted via Android Central App
  • We have the best readers in the world. We all like to crack jokes, and even bicker about cell phones, but it's nice to see that we really care about 4500 good people who may be looking for a job. Here's hoping moto can hire them all.

  • Happy to hear it is likely many of the folks who found themselves without jobs will have a good oportunity to obtain new ones without having to relocate.
  • I'll give my +1 too, Waterloo and the laid off Blackberry employees deserve good news and a chance to keep putting their skills to work in the industry.
  • This is smart move for Google. Just one more knife in the back of BlackBerry before they die.
  • Wow the sure didn't wait long. Lol Posted via Android Central App
  • Shoot, I was really looking forward to buying a cheap house in Waterloo from all the Blackberry layoffs...
  • Wow, if they can do for Motorola what they did for BlackBerry... uh, never mind. Posted via Android Central App
