BlackBerry Priv now receiving its January security patch

Update: The January security patch has been fully detailed by Google. Check out everything that you need to know about the update.

BlackBerry is beginning to push its monthly security update to the Priv, though at this time it is not exactly known what it addresses. According to a tweet from Michael Clewley, the update is rolling out now, and will hit phones that were bought unlocked from ShopBlackBerry and select carriers first. It is not known which carriers it will push through to, but Clewley does also note that it will be making its way to more carriers next week.

At this time, it is not currently known what the security patches address as far as vulnerabilities, so stay tuned for more information as we receive it. If you own a Priv and are not yet seeing the update, you can check manually by heading into your Settings, About phone and checking for it there.

Jared started off writing about mobile phones back when BlackBerry ruled the market, and Windows Mobile was kinda cool. Now, with a family, mortgage and other responsibilities he has no choice but to look for the best deals, and he's here to share them with you.

  • I like that BlackBerry is pushing out another security update but I would like to see them with Marshmallow on the device.
  • Personally, I'm waiting for a less buggy and more stable version of M to release first. For all devices.
  • Marshmallow is stable and fine. The whole release was anyways. Far better than Lollipop with its memory leak Posted via the Android Central App on my Frost Nexus 6P
  • Did they just beat the Nexus devices to the patch?
  • nexus is getting the patch today as well. its odd that it was not reported here
  • probably waiting for around 9-10am PST as that is usually when the factory images get posted vs doing a post and then updating it with the links
  • AC probably did not report the Nexus update to avoid all the comments about Nexus Central ;) Posted via the Android Central App
  • We had to wait to post. There was a press embargo for that news.
  • I'm sure Marshmallow will arrive in the next three months. And it will probably be awesome on this. I think with what BB is doing with software is worth a three month turnaround on major OS updates. Time will tell. For BB it is important to become a key player in Android. If updates take six moths it will probably be too long for most people. Unless they have a rock solid build. I am optimistic. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Don't see anything on my Priv yet. Unlocked from Shop BlackBerry on Telus. Edit: I was incorrect, the update automatically installed. I looked at the build # and I'm on AAD250 Posted via the Android Central App

  • Glad to see BlackBerry taking the lead in patches. Hope all vendors are this fast. BlackBerry has also promised to immediately deliver emergency patches for zero-day exploits without carrier approval (even if it falls outside of the usual monthly patch schedule). If all Android vendors did what blackberry is doing, it would help get rid of Android's stigma of being an unsafe OS compared to iOS. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I don't have a priv, but I'm glad to see them raising the bar. Posted via the Android Central App
  • This is the same update that was leaked to some privs about 2 to 3 weeks ago. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Carphone Warehouse update received. 16mb total size lol but I have noticed a much better battery performance Posted via the Android Central App
  • Still no Verizon Priv ._. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Pretty slick that BB is keeping up on the security patches and getting them out in such a timely manner. That's the way to build up a good reputation. We'll see how they do later in the year, but so far this is commendable.
  • Good show BB! I guess android just needed a real smartphone oem to lead the way, instead of a bunch of appliance makers churning out vaporware.
