EVO 3D ICS update

Top o' the morning, folks! It looks like the Sprint HTC EVO 3D has begun getting its update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. That's according RockLight from ye olde Android Central forums, and other folks are seeing updates as well. We're not quite being inundated with reports of updates yet, so this could just be the initial trickle, or perhaps folks are just sleeping in, or gave up and went the custom ROM route already. Looks like folks are waking up and seeing this one across the board. The timing's right, as Sprint had said to expect it by early August.

As a reminder, here's what's new:

  • A refined, evolved user interface that is simple, beautiful and useful
  • Face Unlock: use state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to unlock your phone with a smile
  • Redesigned camera app which introduces Scenes like Panorama, and Effects such as Vignette, Depth of Field, Vintage and Posterize
  • Web browser now lets you sync Google Chrome™ bookmarks, request full desktop versions of sites, see your open tabs in a new layout
  • People: browse friends, family and coworkers, see their photos in high-resolution and check their latest status updates from Google+
  • Improved keyboard with incredibly accurate typing, an inline spell checker and improved copy and paste support
  • Redesigned Gmail™ app that now lets you swipe between conversations to catch up quickly and search for emails even without a data connection
  • Google+ integration that lets you hangout and video chat with up to 10 friends using your front-facing camera

So, be on the lookout for a 300-megabyte or so update, and try not to let your HTC Rezound-toting friends see you gloat too much.

Sprint EVO 3D finally getting its Ice Cream Sandwich update

Was on the phone with a Sprint rep this morning at about 1am.
I was cursing them out continuously for not giving me a detailed day by day summary of my charges when I was finally transferred to a corporate manager to stop me from recording my next customer service call and posting it on YouTube.
Long story short, he listened to my concerns about the bill and their crappy service and lack of promised updates.
Then I found out the charges were justified and that if I can waited a couple of hours I would have my update to ICS with better signal quality on my phone.
He didn't lie.
Upgrade + improved signal quality + slightly better data speed.

Now who say one loud mouth person isn't able to scare a really big company?

It doesn't matter. If you're rooted, you shouldn't install the update, because it'll break root and you won't be able to restore. If you aren't rooted, then everything should carry over like in a normal upgrade.

The EVO3D came out in June 2011, and I believe the Rezound came out in 4th 4Q 2011... so the EVO3D was out atleast 3-4 months before the Rezound.

My thoughts exactly, it's time to ditch Verizon. Every Verizon update always seems to be just a series of delays, it's pathetic. Time to go GSM and get the next nexus.

AHHHh somebody tell me what to do... i cant back anything up at this moment but i want to update...

fiiinalllyyyy... i actually don't even have my phone. waiting for asurion to replace it. they just shipped me the OG EVO by mistake yesterday. it better be at my door when i get home from work!!!

It wasn't a mistake, that is what they are trying to replace 3D's with when they are out of stock (backordered.)

Can someone post the hboot version after the update? Go to Settings > Power > uncheck Fastboot. Then shut down the phone and start it up holding the volume down button and it will display Hboot version.

After having to deal with the BS of Palm/HP and their failed promises, I was a little jumpy when HTC push it from June/July to the first of August. I'm a happy camper!!!

Here's what I did to (maybe) speed up the process. Go to Settings -> Developer Options and check the box for "Stay Awake." This will prevent the phone from going to sleep and should keep the messages loading or doing whatever ICS is doing that needs to be done for the messages to show up.

Also, once this process completes, it looks like its taking a long time for message threads with lots of messages to open as well.

Patience will be required. unfortunately...

I'm Getting the exact same problem as well and it's frustrating cause I have to click each person's contact to text them back for now. Just go into people. It's a temporary solution but it'll have to do until someone solves this

I had tried that once, but it said no update available too. Just tried it again & the second time it actually checked & found it! Thanks!!!!

Was eagerly awaiting my 3D upgrade to ICS since the original deployment announced for June. Was due for a phone upgrade August 1st, but 2 weeks ago my 3D died. BestBuy replaced it under my insurance, but the replacement was defective, so they figured out how to sell me a new Evo 4G LTE early (I have to go back in on 8/1 for some "upgrade paperwork"), so I already have ICS on the new phone. How ironic that the day before I was supposed to upgrade my phone anyway, this finally rolls out.

I like it on my Evo 4G LTE. I'm sure remaining 3D users will like it, too. Used the panorama photo feature on a trip to New York City with my daughter weekend before last. Worked great.

Sense 3.6 is a lot different than Sense 4.0, though. Sense 4.0 is really slick, but Sense 3.6 has a lot of very annoying features. The thing I hate most about Sense 3.0/3.6 is the "stiff" notification shade. Instead of an experience like unraveling a scroll (Like stock Android), you are pulling a card out of a box. It's very annoying because you can't actually see any of your notifications until it is fully expanded. And don't get me started on the bottom tabs for Notifications/Quick controls... Mistap that, hit the bar, and the shade rolls up automatically. Grr!

Just updated my wife's and she is already back on it. She is presently going off over the improvements. I thought I would be the kid in this situation, but she beat me to it. Now mine is running. It is faster/more fluid now. I'm used to ICS due to my Prime having it already.

Got mine this morning too. I have to admit, the way that it looks, I am a little upset to have went out and purchased the EVO 4g LTE. I could have waited until the next big phone with the looks on this thing. Yes, I kept my 3D phone, and am using it on wifi. I just love the 3D pics!!!

yeah, my 3D was starting to get crazy this last week. I was going to do a factory reset to see if that helped. Now I hope this fixes the jankyness :)

Noooooooo!.....it finally comes out and I'm fiftieth in line at the DMV. Now I'm gonna sit and stare at the clock waiting till I can go home and upgrade.

Where is this so-called "Redesigned camera app which introduces Scenes like Panorama, and Effects such as Vignette, Depth of Field, Vintage and Posterize?"

And why is there STILL no option to shut off the camera's shutter sound? Ugh!

Thrilled to finally get ics! Now where's my jelly bean? Lol, yeah right.

Anybody else having problems with the stock sms app? Mine tries to open but just keeps saying "please wait" and has the spinning wheel of eternity.

Not that it was a huge seller, but the EVO Design just got ICS as well. I had a customer bring theirs in for service, and it downloaded a 256MB update and booted up to ICS.

I guess thats good for the general population, who dont hack, root, or flash. But my old e3d had a GB rom for months. Before i upgraded to a SGS3.

Congrats to all the 3D owners. I wish I could celebrate with you, but my 3D bit the dust about 2 months ago. I'm loving my new Sprint GNex, but I definitely miss the Evo 3D community.

Seems wicked fast. Awesome. Gonna test out battery life and Stitcher today (Stitcher sucked up all the CPU in the previous GB build, which Stitcher told me wasn't their fault)

One word of caution, though: if you're looking at your free space and think that ICS is much lighter weight, think again. That increased free space is because it cleaned the Dalvik cache during the upgrade. I think it'll take 1-2 months of regular use to find the true size of ICS.

EDIT: One bug that I do notice is that when updating apps in Google Play, when the screen is turned off for about 2 minutes, the updates seem to idle and stop downloading. I saw that maybe occasionally in GB, but it's happened twice today with ICS.

Rejoice! Works great for me. The phone overall feels much smoother. Sense is great too!

Finally --- easily create folders on the home screens. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I checked this morning and sure enough, it was available when I clicked "Check for updates". I updated my Sprint EVO 3D like an Eager-Beaver. But now my phone keeps rebooting every few minutes and I can't access apps/data on my SD card. Just chatted with Sprint customer service and they said Sprint hasn't offered it yet. She said I used a third-party service to install it. Geez. Any thoughts or easy fixes for this? Please help.

Did you try another rep? I'm sure by now the service centers have been updated on the rollout by now.

Same here. My phone has rebooted probably 150 times since I installed the update last night.

System process keeps hanging.

There are a couple "Permission Requested" notifications, whenever I click on one of them the phone reboots.

FYI - SD card out seems to be the problem. Google Play Store wouldn't load before, but it worked fine with the SD card removed.

After the app updates completed I shut down and reinserted the SD card. Play store no longer loads, reboots every few minutes. Looks like I'm going to have to format the card. Suckage.

Installed with no problems and running smooth! One question, is it just my eyes or does everything seem a bit sharper? Home screen, icons, weather, ect..

Got to wait until I get home to do the upgrade with the horrid speeds we are getting in phoenix it'll take hours to download.
But I am excited for some ICS!

Come on Sprint get Phoenix some next gen networking action!

Totally cool. I am glad that Sprint is keeping the 3D up to date.

I am even more glad we left Sprint a few months ago for Verizon. The data and voice service is night and day different!!

ok,so i upgrade to this ics and i go to my gallery and it says i have no pictures or video! wtf? i had lots of pics and a couple videos! can anybody help me recover my gallery? or is all lost? any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

I'm having the same problem with my Gallery not seeing my pics. Can you please explain how to unmount and SD card and then remount? Do you mean actually taking the SD card out of the phone and then putting it back in again?

Waited for ICS. Got ICS. Love ICS. The only issue I am having is I randomly get "Unfortunately, Maps has stopped." with the choice of Report or OK. Very annoying. This can happen in the Google Play app, or other apps. Anyone else have this issue?

Did you recheck the settings in case it was reset? Mine is actually coming in much faster now. My laptop, tablet and phone now chime within seconds of each other.

Just downloaded ICS on my E3D... so far so good, loving it. Appears to be quicker and more fluid. Sound appears to be better as well. It doesn't have "Beats" does it? Would love to play with the Panorama on my camera... not there, but oh well. Also, I'd have to agree with others, everything appears to be sharper and more clear...

thee only thing im concern about is the camera .. it says new effects but they are the same that we had ...Vignette, Depth of Field, Vintage and Posterize we had all of them before..and no panorama mode...

Since the update, my phone is in a constant "update" state, with only a few moments here and there that that stupid circle disappears. It slows everything up. It took me two days to get text messages back. 4G seems a big problem, and the Sprint Hotspot service no longer gives me 4G (when the 4G is working). Calls take longer to connect. Yahoo mail hangs from time to time and I can't download attachments of any kind.

This has been the worst cell phone update experience of my life. I am a patient guy and understand that not all bugs will be completely worked out. I can live with a few quirks. When the entire phone experience is bad I feel ripped off.

I am not experiencing any of those issues. My phone restarted after the update, and everything has been running smooth since...
