Sony Bridge for Mac

Lock screen widgets, improved launcher and new animations all included

Starting today, Sony is making an Android 4.2.2 update available for the Xperia ZL, including the North American unlocked LTE model. We just updated our own handset to software version 10.3.A.0.423 via Sony Bridge For Mac (the equivalent of Sony PC Companion), which took just shy of 30 minutes including downloading of necessary files. The update process went smoothly, and the device is indeed running Android 4.2.2 as Sony claims.

The official Sony support pages are still listing information for the previous 4.1 update so we don't have an official changelog, but our initial impressions are positive. The lock screen has been slightly redesigned to incorporate Android 4.2's lock screen widgets, including swiping left to enter the camera and right to add additional widgets as you please. Turning on and off the screen now has a subtle fade in/out animation as opposed to the circular one previously.

There are some subtle tweaks to the launcher as well, including a new background for the on-screen navigation buttons that is now semi-transparent on the home screen rather than completely black. The notification quick toggles are now smaller, cleaner and fully customizable, as are the animations around the launcher and OS as a whole. The multitasking menu has been changed as well with larger app thumbnails and larger mini app launcher at the bottom. We'll be bringing you our deeper impressions as we get around to all of the new features of the software soon.

In the meantime, if you have an Xperia ZL you can download the update via the PC Companion or Bridge For Mac applications from the source link below. Be sure to head into the forums and let other members know what you think after you're done.

Sony is doing it right with it's most current generation of phones :) By far one of the quickest updates by any manufacturer :)

Great update and it was really fast one. Samsung should learn from Sony. Yet, anyone knows how to delete added lockscreen widgets? I can't manage how to do it :-D

Tap and pull the widget down to expand it to full screen. You can then long-press any of the widgets on the lockscreen and drag them up to the "X" at the top to delete them.

The problem is that long tap gives me nothing. Tried a lot of times before...

What makes the Xperia ZL and North America more important that it had to be updated before Europe and the Xperia Z? They're basically the same device so why the discrepancy Sony?

I thought the Xperia Z was the flagship device? I haven't missed the 4.2.2 update for that have I?

I''m sure the Xperia Z 4.2.2 update is around the corner, especially since it's actually leaked out a week or two ago. Don't worry reudyfam, you and I will be rocking 4.2.2 on our Z's in no time :)

Xperia zl stock messaging app with 4.2.2 update still doesn't support group messaging like Iphone does! Will Sony release an update to support this. That was the one thing I was really looking forward to with this update. Lame
