Xperia Acro

The first clear images of the Japan-exclusive Sony Ericsson Xperia Acro have emerged via Japanese blog Datacider. Based on the new pics, as well as earlier leaked information, it seems the Acro is a slightly bulkier version of the Xperia Arc with new functionality for the Japanese market, including NFC, a TV tuner and infra-red sensor. It also looks like the Acro will sport the same 4.2-inch display and 8 megapixel Exmor R camera as the Arc.

No release date has been revealed yet, but with some of the 2011 Xperia phones being delayed or in short supply due to the recent natural disasters in Japan, it could be a while before the Acro hits Japanese shelves. [Datacider via Xperia Blog]

TV tuner.....

Something like 91% of all US house hold television programming is delivered by cable or satellite, but nearly every market still has broadcast TV stations.

One wonders if having OTA TV tuners in phones (and tablets) would find a market in in the US.

It would certainly help slow down the insane rush to on-demand IP based television, which most experts agree can not possibly be sustainable for everyone in the US without a 5 fold increase in bandwidth nationwide.

A TV receiver takes way less power than a cell connection.
