Google Play edition HTC One getting Android 4.4 KitKat update, here's your direct OTA link

Hot on the heels of the open-source code drop, the Google Play edition HTC One has started receiving its over-the-air update to the latest version of Android, 4.4 KitKat. The 320MB update is arriving automatically on some handsets today — though as usual, not everyone will receive the update right away. As is the case with other non-Nexus 5 devices, the update includes the older stock Android launcher as opposed to the new one with Google Now integrated.

If you want to sideload the update, we've got the download link after the break.

  • Android 4.3 JWR66Y to Android 4.4 KRT16S for GPe HTC One (320MB)

Note: On the Google Play edition HTC One you can download the update directly to local storage, then use the "update from phone storage" in the stock recovery to flash your update.

Alternatively, use the method for manually updating Nexus devices (opens in new tab).

  • HTC is doing it right. Samsung is in no hurry. Posted via Android Central App
  • Already have 4.4 on my S4, since last week. Posted via Android Central App
  • No thanks to Samsung though. But like you are proclaiming, if you want it bad enough you can get it by other means. |❌_❌|
  • thats not the point. the one has had 4.4 roms since a day or so after the release, that doesnt mean it was right, or that HTC had ANYTHING to do with it. There is no way you can deny that HTC has been the fastest OEM and the most honest with user on timing with the exception of MOTO. I think samsung will not let this stand for very long though, they have much more money and resources and if they really wanted could probably beat everyone to it. Only time will tell
  • Well it seems Google is in no hurry either. Still no OTA update for my kids N7-2012.
  • its released to N7 2012 ... dont know why u havent got it yet.
  • Got it last night. Sucky staged roll-outs is my guess.
  • LG G2 I'm jealous Posted via Android Central App
  • You will be jealous for a long time ... Posted via Android Central App
  • I have a G2 and N4. I'm happy the N4 got this update but as a G2 owner as well, there really isn't anything to be jealous of. What is there a reworked phone dialer to worry about. Other than white icons and dialer there isn't much of anything noticeable in the update. I'm more bummed that Google is keeping the N5 GEL launcher separate from other nexus devices. I've used it on my G2 and it's a step up from Googles stock launcher on the Nexus 4. I don't understand why they would keep it separate although it's easy enough to get and use. Just my take on actually using both products. Posted via G2 Android Central App
  • You can easily install the GEL on an N4. Posted via Android Central App
  • This is true, but the argument is that Google should be providing the GEL apk as part of the stock 4.4 OTA. Believe it or not, not everybody with a Nexus device roots, loads Roms, or sideloads apks. Posted via Android Central App
  • Me too! I'm Jealous. My N5 only has the 4.4 Kitkat. Oh, wait that's the latest OS...sorry about that. I'm all set.
  • Nice job :). The more on KK 4.4 the merrier :) XT1060 via Android Central App
  • That update method. How easy can it get? Posted via Android Central App

    Now on 4.4 Kit Kat.
Cheers Alex :)) Posted via Android Central App
  • I'm getting a status 7 on CWM 6.0.4.3, error due to an incompatible model (m7 not m7ul, which I am using). How'd you get the OTA work on yours redrumsilence? thanks.
  • You cant have CWM or TWRP installed, you will have to use your stock recovery in order to flash this, or you can wait until someone makes a flashable zip that can be used with CWM or TWRP.
  • does this include ir blaster software ..?
  • Somewhere in Asia, a certain company called Samsung are still busy working on 'Tizen' bloody crap! Hope it fails.
  • I hope so too
  • Is it possible to install this without the stock recovery? I converted to GPE and while I received the OTA, it wouldn't install because I no longer have stock recovery (I'm also rooted). I have tried re-installing the stock recovery via adb in preparation but I must not have done it correctly because when I let the 4.4 OTA try to install on it's own all I saw was a little bugdroid, a red triangle, and a "no command" message.
  • You have to hold down Power Button+Volume Up to access recovery when the droid with red triangle appears. That's the way it works with Nexus devices. So I am guessing its same with GPe devices. Sent from my White Nexus 4 running KitKat.
  • Got it thank you. When I did this the installation aborted because I modified my build.prop (and I assume because I was rooted as well). I eventually RUU'd an unrooted 4.3 GPE, ran one update to 4.3 then sideloaded 4.4.
  • Nice job HTC, they're on a roll. Too bad my 2013 N7 still hasn't received the OTA! Not that I'm in a huge rush though since I heard flash doesn't work on KitKat Posted via Android Central App
  • Congrats all who hew receive their 4.4 ota update, as for me and my Nexus 7,2013 still waiting, but giving it till the end of the year. Seeing philly comment I know I am not alone
  • Well you and Philly are alone check out the kitkat forum Posted via Android Central App
  • Where do I find the "update from phone storage" button?
  • That's what I want to know Posted via Android Central App
  • 1. Put the file on your phone in the SD card, as you normally place any file or picture.
    2. Go to Recovery by holding Power + Volume Down
    3. Select Recovery and when the Android drawing is with the !, press first Volume up and then quickly the Power button togheter and release
    4. Then select install from phone storage, select the file, and wait about 5 minutes, and you're done. Check out the xda thread if you need help.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2532491 Posted via Android Central App
  • Thanks, I will give it a try.
  • Thanks bhatech, This worked except for one exception. in step 3 I had to hold volume up first followed by power button. Thanks again for posting these instructions. Jerry
  • :)
  • I'm confused how you update from phone storage...
  • and my 2013 nexus 7 is still waiting
  • My 2012 got it over the weekend. Maybe they are going in chronological order.
  • Enjoy the wait as you're not missing anything. Without the GEL included, it's barely an update at all, amounting to a few under the hood improvements, or so I'm told because short of the white icons in the top tray, I see no significant difference on my nexus 7 (2013). and as someone else mentioned, if you value Flash at all this update is actually a step in the wrong direction. Very disappointed in Google with this update.
  • What were you expecting from the update? Apollo 11? C'mon man, Jellybean's android's biggest update. Posted via Android Central App
  • What was I expecting? Well, first, that it would receive ALL elements of KitKat. Limiting certain features to only the newest flagship device while leaving older devices out in the cold (and my Nexus 7 is a whole 4 months old) sound oddly reminiscent of another company that routinely gets lambasted for this behavior. Actions like this do nothing to remove the fragmentation stigma most commonly levied against Android--that's my biggest gripe. As far as content--yeah, it's a bit disappointing. What's even slightly significant changes do you see? I get to know designate my home launcher in the Settings?--oh boy. Another of the biggest changes, the dialer, is obviously a non-feature on the Nexus 7. Same goes for assigning a default SMS app. ART is nice, but not all apps are compatible yet so, switching over from Dalvik could be problematic. And Flash now doesn't work with ANY browser. So yeah, nothing terribly exciting, IMO.

  • This update couldn't have been easier. The update was flawless and I'm using Nova Launcher Beta to get full translucent notification bar. Xda-developers and Android and Android Central and Rootzwiki are THE best site. Posted via Android Central App
  • Wish it worked for sprint... Posted via Android Central App
  • Did you try anyways?
  • Finally! Here we go! Time for 4.4!
  • Can this be installed on a rooted htc one (NOT GPE)?
  • Yes it can Posted via Android Central App
  • Can you tell me how?
I have a rooted HTC One GPE with TWRP
  • Flash it the same way you flash custom ROMS in recovery using the fastboot flash boot boot.img command in cmd. Sent via the Android 5.0 MilkShake.
  • but i haven't .img!
i have the zip file downloaded from that post!
  • You have to convert your phone into a GPE first. Just go on xda, there's probably a tutorial for this.
  • i just converted it!
i have TWRP recovery, rooted HTC one GPE!
  • Oups, sorry missed it ^^'. Alex Dobie made an how-to post in case you're still stuck.
  • can we just flash this from pc while in fastboot instead of telling recovery we want to do so?
  • Am I able to update my normal HTC one with this update, if it isn't a Google play edition?
  • You have to convert. Or use a custom Rom. Posted via Android Central App
  • I'm so confused, isn't sideloading pirating?? BlackBerry user #13 out of 9. Posted via Android Central App running beautifully on my BlackBerry Z10
  • This is so yesterday. Just get over it :p
  • AHHHHHH NO!!!!!.Sideloading an update is the equivalent of skipping the line and getting it directly. It's legal and is 99.9% safe
  • Lol, you just can't leave it alone, can you? You can't possibly expect us to agree with you. Posted via Android Central App
  • With side loading , you are simply downloading the same zip file utilized in the OTa update and manually updating. Nothing wrong with it at all. In fact in the time it takes people to complain about not receiving the ota, they could have already performed the update. Posted via Android Central App
  • Aren't you installing it on a phone that shouldn't have it "right now"? BlackBerry user #13 out of 9. Posted via Android Central App running beautifully on my BlackBerry Z10
  • No. Imagine if they sent the ota to every user at once. The servers just couldn't handle it. So they stagger the rollout. Its the equivalent of cutting in line :) you are simply manually downloading and applying the update as opposed to waiting for your number to be called, so to speak. Posted via Android Central App
  • Agreed. That's as simple as it can be explained. I'm not sure why we're still debating this. Posted via my "Gift from God" Nexus 5

  • So after kitkat 4.4 what's next? Posted via Android Central App
  • Bug fixes and stability updates which will change version number from 4.4 to 4.4.x. Till the new android update. Hopefully will be a 5.x version

  • Does Google Wallet Tap and Pay work? I have noticed some 4.4 ROMS have it (but nobody has actually tried it) so I hope the official update works for the GPE HTC One
  • Tap to pay is there. Wallet allowed me to set it up and choose the card to use. Cant wait to give it a try later :)
  • Let me know if it actually works. Like I said all the other ROMs let me set it up but doesn't actually do anything at a terminal. I hope it works!!
  • I don't get why N7 2013 peeps can't get 4.4 ota DO THE FRAMEWORK TRICK Posted via Android Central App
  • Framework clearing is not a good idea and can cause issues. Just side load. Way easy. Posted via Android Central App
  • :yawn Have had it for nearly a week now. Posted via Android Central App
  • An alternative way to get the stock 4.4 launcher is to get the APK off xda. Only thing I can find that's different thus far. After root, I'm goona find out how to delete that tap and pay in settings. No good for UK.
  • When i try to install it says: set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
and abortes the installation. I have tried to reinstall the GPE 4.3 RUU, and then tried to manually flash the stock gpe recovery, but that's not the solution, can someone help me?
  • Your rooted? Restore with the unrooted then update. Posted via Android Central App
  • worked, thanks a lot :D
  • This might be a stupid question but I have flashed a custom GPe ROM for my previously sense based HTC One. Will I be able to install this update on that or will I have to wait for someone to make a GPe ROM with 4.4?
  • Can I update kit kat in my HTC ONE mobile ??? How it works after update?? Plz reply ASAP
