First beta-quality Android N release is now available

Update: The first beta update appears to be rolling out right now. Be sure to enroll your device at the link below, and check for the update.

Google has announced that it will be releasing the first beta-quality Android N release later today. This release is supposed to be good enough to install on the phone and tablet that you use daily. This is a huge step, as the previous releases were called Developer Previews, and had various issues that may have prevented you from using it daily.

You can enroll your device at Android.com/beta if you want to be ready for when it releases. Will you be enrolling your Nexus for the program, or will you be sticking to an official release for now? Sound off in the comments and let us know which side you are on.

  • I'll be giving it another try on my Nexus 5x. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Will it void my device's warranty if I enroll for the beta program?
  • Can someone running the new beta release check and tell me if the RGB slider option(to change RGB values of the screen) is still there? Should be in the system UI tuner or developer options
  • No
  • Sounds like fun .. let's get some installing rolling.
  • Hooray! Bluetooth has been a real annoyance for the past month or two. Otherwise things worked well so I was happy to put up with the occasional bug, but this is very exciting. Posted via the AC App on my Nexus 6P
  • Talk about great timing, I ordered a 5X yesterday and it should arrive on Friday. I can't get rid of this Galaxy S6 fast enough.
  • Nice! I have been part of the beta since day one. No major hiccups. The more stable the better. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Downloading now!
  • It's live. I just checked for the update, and there it was. Google with the quickness! Posted via the Android Central App
  • What's the cutoff for nexi? Is it available for our N5's? Posted via Serenity
  • Nope, not available for the Nexus 5, disappointed. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Will Android Pay be activated in this version? That was the only downfall in the previous dev previews for me.
  • Me too Posted via my Nexus 6P on fi
  • Android pay works. I just opened it up Posted via the Android Central App
  • Hi are you sure. I just unenrolled as it didn't work earlier today.. Posted via the Android Central App
  • If I joined the beta, would all of my current apps still work? Or do I need to wait for them to be developed for N? Would love to try the beta but if I can't use my everyday apps then it's no good for me Posted via the Android Central App
  • I haven't run into any that aren't supported.
  • Dish Anywhere busted
  • One app I know didn't work before was HBO GO, hopefully it works this time around. Posted via the Android Central App

  • When the final build of 7.0 comes out will the OTA wipe the Nexus? Posted from my Nexus 6P
  • I'd like to know this as well. If we install this beta, with the final N OTA wipe the device?
  • I would highly doubt that it would require wiping your device. When I had apple iOS betas it would update to the build number which matched the final release build number. Posted via the Android Central App Apologies for the avatar by the way. It's like standing in full kit at the wrong end of the football stand.
  • I read some place that it will not wipe data. You will get a OTA for the production level OS that will replace the beta one and then following that you will get beta security updates since OS level beta would be closed.
  • Installed it anyway. It's soo cool :) Posted from my Nexus 6P
  • The current version works well on my 5X. So this should be very good.
  • I already have the N Preview since 1st release and it's a great experience :-) There were literally 2 minuscule things that were broken, but everything worked just fine ^_^ Oh, the future ^_^
  • Android pay still doesn't work with this current preview. As I use that on my main phone I'd say the N Preview isn't just ready to put on my daily driver. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Release notes indicate Android Pay should work. I'm ready to try N again :) Posted via the Android Central App
  • The release notes might say that. But when I open the app or say it does not work with the developer build of N Posted via the Android Central App
  • Working on my N6 with new release. Admittedly in the UK here it's new and I've not yet added a card. Old build had the compatibility message... fingers crossed! Posted via the Android Central App
  • Can you let us know if it works when you add a card? I'm tempted to update to this but want to try Android Pay more (another UK user here).
  • Not sure what changed. But I just tried to open Android Pay again and it opened right up. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Just landed on my N9, debating whether to enrol my N6 or wait. Being as Android pay only landed today I'm keen to use it. Hopefully you're right & there'll be no issues with it! Posted via the Android Central App
  • Downloaded and ready to go on my 6P.
  • You are much faster than I sir. Just got mine installed and checking N out again. Posted via the Android Central App
  • https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMTCHj9Ibdn2fFkD4I1tGLXUAMxeDQStoQH... Installed on my Nexus 5X! Folders on the home screen have returned to what they looked like in Marshmallow Posted via the Android Central App
  • Yes I've noticed the same. I liked the new design too. Posted via the Android Central App
  • No nexus 7... ( Posted via the Android Central App
  • Yeah dude i was hoping for that one as well. I have a N7, N9 and N10 and was also hoping that they would do one more solid for the N10 as well.
  • Me too, there's still hope isn't there? Posted via the Android Central App
  • It'll be three years old by the time N is officially released. It'll be a miracle if it gets the official update
  • Is the version in the photo the "stable" beta or is that what's been available for a while now? The article says it's available later today, so not sure if I dive in now with NPD35K or if I should wait...?
  • So tempting... Must resist...
  • installing.
  • Downloading now!! Posted via the Android Central App
  • If only I had WiFi at work! 328MB is about a third of my monthly cellular allotment.
  • Resigned up after some issues with my N9, still waiting to get back into the beta release.
  • Damnit Google! Where did you move the dark theme? I hope its not gone :-(
  • Do you have to re-open the UI Tuner?
  • I do't see it in the UI Tuner. Quite a few things missing there. I'm at work now so I don't have time to look elsewhere. Hopefully I can find it later this evening
  • It's in the quick settings now. Swipe over and youll see night mode. Long press to access the settings for it Posted via the Android Central App
  • Re: android pay https://developer.android.com/preview/support.html "Developer Preview 3 is Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) approved on these devices: Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, and Pixel C. Apps that depend on CTS approved builds should work normally on these devices (Android Pay for example)."
  • I'm curious if it works for anybody. Certainly doesn't for me. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Just tried to open Android Pay again and it opened right up. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I'm going to stick to the official release builds because my nexus 6p is my daily driver and my backup is a flip phone. I can't afford not to have a working phone and I would prefer to stick to a touch screen. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Been using it since alpha, looking forward to the beta. On Nexus 6. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Just got the ota! Posted via the Android Central App
  • Tempted to update my 5x... I'm still on Marshmallow, will it do a data wipe to update to the N preview? Or is the data wipe only if you want to revert back?
  • Only if you go back Posted from Nexus 6 running Android N
  • Only when you revert.
  • I just took the plunge and installed preview 3 and EVERYTHING was retained, all app passwords, Google sign in details etc. Smooth, easy process for me and have not found anything broken yet and it may just be my imagination but apps seem to be loading faster for me.
  • Thanks everyone! Already signed up and got the notification for the OTA. I will install when I get to some reliable WiFi tonight.
  • Sad it wont work on the original Nexus 5. I know its getting older, but still a great phone...and if I remember correctly Google was promoting the OS (since Kit Kat) as being able to run on lower end devices etc. Wouldn't that N5 fit the wording in that? The N5 and N5X are essentially the same, just a cpu speed bump. Has anyone tried putting the OS on the N5...are there any defining reasons why Android N wouldn't work?
  • XDA will likely have a N build sooner rather than later, check there.
Unfortunately it's just time for the nexus 5 to reach end of life, the Nexus 4 didn't get marshmallow last year.
  • They can't guarantee performance on the 5X and 6P so it would be even worse on the 2.5 year old 5. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you can get the official version.
  • It's a developer preview (now reaching beta status), there's no reason not to work on the N5, but also there's no reason they're obliged to do it. Be patience and maybe it should arrive on it when it's officially released. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Crap! I took the OTA for my 6P and after the install it's stuck in a boot loop. Anyone know how to fix this?
  • Just let it do its thing. Mines appeared to be in a bootloop too but it eventually finished Posted via the Android Central App
  • It gets to the PIN screen, I enter my PIN and then after the color balls twinkle for a bit, then google logo pops up and we go through it again.
  • Same thing man. This is ridiculous. I thought it was ready for daily drivers
  • Beta means beta! Posted via the Android Central App
  • Installing on my 5x
  • Upgrade from Marshmallow to N beta worked well for me so far.
  • Downloading now... What's the worst that could happen?lol Posted via the Android Central App
  • Just finished, whole process took less than 30 minutes including download time. I like what I see so far! Loving the new notification drawer Posted via the Android Central App
  • Any issues with Fi users moving to this?
  • Installed last night, everything including FI is working fine.
  • For some reason when I tried installing it when it rebooted it never updated ? Still on the official 6.0.1. can't find the update any longer either? Anyone know what's wrong? Posted via the Android Central App
  • Same thing happened to me
  • Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated
  • Same thing here, even unenrolled and enrolled again and rebooted. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Just unenrolled, checked for update and then rebooted and enrolled again and now the download is back again. I will update once it's downloaded again and I try to install it. Posted via the Android Central App
  • It worked! Posted via the Android Central App
  • Does anyone know whether it's possible to re-enroll in the beta after having been enrolled and opting out? My device no longer shows up as eligible on the beta page.
  • It was available for me after unenrolling at Alpha 2. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I've had it installed on my on my N6 with not too many problems besides a few apps crash here and there and the YouTube video going black sometimes. But I just installed it on my daily driver 6P and I cannot get the dark theme to enable, it was removed from system tuner and now there's a toggle for dark mode but it's not changing the theme in settings... grr Posted via my Nexus 6P.
  • Where is said toggle?
  • 2nd page of toggle tray. Posted via my Nexus 6P.
  • So tempting but I can't have any phone problems right now.. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Installed fine on my 5x. Only issue so far is what was already stated HBO Go crashes. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I'm so tempted, my only concern is Android Pay not working. Some people here are saying it is working and some see saying it's not? I'm extra keen to have Android Pay because im in the UK and it was only released today. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Android Pay opened right up for me, it used to crash as soon as I opened it before using my Nexus 6. I'm using my Nexus 6P if that makes a difference though now. Posted via my Nexus 6P.
  • I've just installed the latest preview and everything works fine including android pay. I'm in the UK and just got android pay today as well. It's had the CTS so no worries. Works like a charm.. I've had all the previous builds and they worked well in my Nexus 6 and now on my Nexus 6p.. So far :) Posted via the Android Central App
  • Android Pay didn't work two hours ago, but it's working now. Overall.... Seems faster :-) Posted via the Android Central App
  • Wi-Fi is broken on the 6p for me.
  • My home Wi-Fi connected no problem. Posted via my Nexus 6P.
  • One M9 isn't eligible.
:-[ Posted via the Android Central App
  • As it's not a Nexus device, of course it isn't eligible. Posted from my Nexus 6.
  • Why would it be?!? Posted via the Android Central App
  • Downloaded it as soon as the announcement was made. Keeps throwing me in a bootloop. Used fastboot to get my 6.0.1 back. Going to try it again later.
  • I received an error about 70% through the install process. I was able to restart my phone and it worked fine and of course it's still on Marshmallow. Does anyone know how to get the update back so I can try again? Posted via the Android Central App
  • It's kinda working for me. It random rebooted a couple times while I was at the gym. My ring tones and alerts don't seem to be working. I like the new notification drawer. I'll probably play with it a day or so and then go back to a stable build. Posted via the 6P!
  • All my notifications sounds are working so far. Posted via my Nexus 6P.
  • I just finished a factory reset and now my notification sounds are coming through fine.
  • So far, I'm loving it on my N9! Keyboard themes are a bonus too! Only issue to date is Android Pay. It opens, but won't add any cards. States it can't verify the device is running android. I'll hold off enrolling my N6 for now I think Posted via the Android Central App
  • I added all my cards while on Marshmallow and all are available on the beta. Don't have any others to add or I'd try it. You can probably add them from a different device so you don't have to revert just to add a card. Posted via my Nexus 6P.
  • They're in my android pay account on my N6 which is still on MM. Nothing showing up on the N9 & unable to add anything to it. Oh well Posted via the Android Central App
  • Weird, I've been using mine since 3p or so and haven't found a issue. I keep coming back here to see what ppl are reporting to see if I have the issue. Since my 6P is my daily phone I'm trying everything I can think of to make sure everything I need is working. I haven't found a issue yet thankfully. Posted via my Nexus 6P.
  • Just loaded on N9 and the very first app I opened doesn't work which is for the security cameras at my office. Oh well... that's why they call it beta. Posted via the Android Central App
  • So, has anyone figured out how to get the dark theme back. I see how to activate night mode. I want the dark theme back for the settings menu, etc. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Same... can't figure it out either. I still have the 2nd update on my N6 with it but can't figure it out on this new one. Posted via my Nexus 6P.
  • I'll wait for the early adopters to tell us how it really is first. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Loving it so far. Phone seems smoother and faster. No hiccups either...yet. Posted via the AC App on my Nexus 6P
  • My Bluetooth keeps disconnecting, anyone else having issues with Bluetooth? Posted via the Android Central App
  • When I try to enroll for the beta program it says if you try to get back to official released version (Marshmallow) from beta then all your data will be erased. I want to know, when Android N becomes official and if I install it then will it erase my data too?
  • been using this on my Nexus 5x since it released a few days ago. there are a few small bugs still, but the lag that has been on my 5x since day 1 is completely gone... love it. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I received my Nexus 5x Saturday and loaded the Android N beta Sunday. A couple bugs adding additional accounts to the gmail app, some apps freeze in the dual screen function but all the main things work great including Android pay
