Best answer: It's currently unknown if Diablo Immortal is going to be free to play, but it's looking likely that it will be. At Blizzcon 2019, developers mentioned that the team hadn't finalized how they plan to monetize the game, but given not only the general response to the game, but how other mobile games are built, it seems likely that Diablo Immortal will be free to play with the ability to spend money for extras.
Is Diablo Immortal free to play?
Blizzard has yet to formally reveal just exactly how Diablo Immortal will be available to players. It's unclear whether it'll be free to play, free to play with microtransactions, or cost a one-time fee.
According to a company update released during Blizzcon 2019, the priority is to get things right when it comes to the business model.
We're focused on building a great Diablo game first. That said, we know the business model is top of mind for lots of people out there and we're taking the time to get it right. It's too early to share details, but we want to make a Diablo game players love and to support it for years to come. We plan to achieve that by creating an ecosystem that accounts for and welcomes every type of player—from our most die-hard Diablo veterans to those who'll be exploring Sanctuary for the first time.
While the possibility for the game to be free still exists, it's unclear if it will be. Currently, Blizzard is still looking at how to monetize the game, so fans should expect to spend money in some capacity. However, due to how large the mobile market is and using other extremely popular games as an example, it wouldn't be shocking to see Diablo Immortal end up being free to play, but utilize in-app purchases as an effort to incentivize spending.
When does Diablo Immortal launch?
Blizzard has yet to release any information about a release date and we haven't heard anything since the game was announced in 2018. However, because the game is already available to pre-register on Android (not on iOS as of the time of this writing), it wouldn't be too shocking to see a release date get announced next. According to Activision Blizzard during their 2019 Fourth Quarter earnings call, the company is expected to enter regional testing for Diablo Immortal in the middle of 2020.
Diablo Immortal is a fully realized entry to the Diablo series. With the added benefit of an MMO experience, Immortal looks set to be amazing.
