Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2

Small improvements both inside and out, with no bump in sensor quality

Samsung was sure to let us know that the latest iteration of its Galaxy Camera was on its way at CES, and we were lucky enough to spend a little time with it on the show floor. The Galaxy Camera 2, as it's called, refines the design just slightly and bumps the internal specs — a larger battery, faster processor and double the RAM. Aside from new shooting modes and Android 4.3 onboard the camera interface, lens and sensor are unchanged — you'll be taking pictures of the same quality as you did on the original.

Be sure to check out our hands-on comparison video (above) between the Galaxy Camera 2 and its older sibling, as well as a photo gallery after the break.

AT&T to be exclusive data provider for Tesla Motors in North America

AT&T looking to be the leader in the new connected car space

AT&T has announced that they have partnered with Tesla Motors, and will be the exclusive wireless provider for the North American region. Their data network will be powering Tesla's remote diagnostics, entertainment, live traffic reports, weather and navigation services. Everyone's favorite entrepreneur and technologist (as well as Tesla CEO) Elon Musk seems pretty stoked about the deal.

Tesla’s goal has always been to catalyze the market for electric vehicles for all consumers while providing an exceptional driving experience. AT&T’s advanced and reliable wireless connectivity will help Tesla continue to deliver a cutting-edge ownership experience.

Yesterday AT&T announced their new AT&T Drive initiative and 5,000 square foot Atlanta-based Drive Studio, which should work out well for both Tesla as well as application developers wanting to get attention for their apps.

While Tesla won't move the volume of cars that a company like Ford or Nissan would, inking a deal with Musk and Tesla is a pretty big score for AT&T. It never hurts when you can work with one of the darlings of the tech world while developing new technology.

The full press release is after the break.

Seidio announces OBEX Waterproof case for Galaxy Note 3

Seidio today at CES is announcing a new OBEX waterproof case for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

The case sports an IP68 rating, meaning that it’s waterproof for up to 30 minutes at 2 meters. (Far better than you’d fare, we’d say.) It’s also rated against dust, and for falls from 6 feet at different angles.

Also, an anti-reflection glass protects the camera lens without getting in the way of your precious selfies. Waterproof membranes protect the speakers and microphones, and rubber stoppers keep the phone’s USB and headphone ports clear of debris. And the case does all this without getting in the way of NFC signals.

The case itself is $79.  Another $10 will get you a holster as well.

Audi announces Android-powered Mobile Audi Smart Display tablet

If you're in the market for a new Audi tablet, you might also be in the market for a new tablet. Audi's already announced their participation in the new Open Automotive Alliance with Google, and it was widely anticipated that they'd be announcing Android in the car at CES 2014. Well, they did, but not in the way you might have expected: it's a tablet.

The new 10.2-inch Mobile Audi Smart Display tablet is Audi's latest foray into electronics. Powered by a Tegra 4 chip, the Mobile Audi Smart Display runs Android underneath, but features a very heavily skinned launcher that is optimized for in car use. For passengers, not drivers. Audi's rolling out a new version of their rotary dial + touchpad MMI interface for drivers that integrates multitouch gestures and natural language voice controls (ala Google Now and Siri) for the drivers.

With the onslaught of news coming out of Las Vegas this week, we almost forgot that CES isn't the only place to make an announcement. Then we opened our mailboxes to find this. It's an invitation to join Motorola in London on January 14 for the unveiling of a new product, and despite previous assertions, we're hoping the company is finally ready to bring its flagship Moto X to Europe.

Luckily, we'll be out of the desert and back across the pond by then, so tune in next Tuesday to see exactly what Motorola has up its sleeve.

Logitech announces new cases for Samsung's Galaxy Note Pro and Galaxy Tab Pro devices

Enhance your productivity on Samsung's new tablets with a Bluetooth keyboard case

Earlier today Samsung announced two new tablets, the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro, and now Logitech is announcing two new cases for these devices. The Logitech Pro is their latest keyboard case that features several design tweaks to make it work best with Samsung's new devices. With Samsung bringing these devices in a 12.2 inch form factor Logitech was able to get a full sized Bluetooth keyboard inside the case which is something many people will enjoy.

Some of the other features of the case are the ultra slim design that Logitech was able to pull off by using state of the art materials. They have also added protection for bumps, spills, and scratches with near full protection once inside of the case. Utilizing a SecureLock system Logitech is able to ensure that the tablet won't come loose once clipped in, and they have added the ability to have two different viewing angles depending on how you are using the device. When it comes to battery life Logitech has gone way above and beyond and they claim that the device will last for up to three months on a single charge with around two hours of use each day.

Logitech has announced that they will begin selling the Logitech Pro in February 2014 for a suggested retail pricing of $129.

Hands-on with the ASUS Padfone Mini

One of the many products to come from ASUS in its CES 2014 press conference was the Padfone Mini, a smaller device device based upon its phone/tablet docking hybrid system. So, unlike previous Padfone devices, the Mini has a 4-inch smartphone that docks into a 7-inch tablet.

From the front, it's extremely reminiscent of the ASUS Fonepad. Powering the device is a 1.6GHz Intel Z2560 CPU backed up by 1GB of RAM. On the software front we're coming with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box, though as with other new devices ASUS is promising an update to Android 4.4 KitKat.

The Padfone Mini isn't positioned at the high-end of the spectrum, with a pretty average 480x800 resolution display on the phone, and a 1280x800 resolution panel on the tablet dock. Internal storage is limited to 8GB but with microSD card expansion, and a pair of cameras rated at 8MP on the back, and 2MP on the front. The Padfone Mini will also come in a range of colors, including this striking red variant, as well as black, white, blue and yellow.

For a few more hands on photos, and a video runthrough, head on past the break.

#CESLive morning brief: Tuesday, January 7

While the rest of the country is waking up underneath a polar vortex, our team on the ground in Las Vegas is already warming up for another day of CES 2014. It may be zero degrees on your thermometer, but it's a balmy 70 on the show floor, which officially opens to the public today.

With yesterday's big news from Samsung, LG, Sony, Huawei, and ASUS, what's left to see? A lot. We'll be meeting with representatives from Motorola, Sony, Samsung and NVIDIA, among others, to take a closer look at their newly-unveiled wares. And that's just this morning.

At 1 p.m. PST (4 p.m. in the east), we'll be dropping by one of the day's opening keynotes headlined by Yahoo's Marissa Mayer. As in years past, she'll speak on the state of the tech industry, the importance of CES, and her company's role in the ever changing tech landscape. Later at 6 p.m. PST, we'll be dropping by Showstoppers at the Wynn for a consolidated look at some of the show's coolest products.

Oh, and did we mention #CESLive? We're kicking it off at 12 noon PST with a busy day of on air interviews and features all coming to you live from our mega stage on the show floor. You really, really don't want to miss this. Check out today's full schedule at our #CESLive hub, where you'll also find all the CES news fit to print from every Mobile Nations site.

Polaroid announces Socialmatic, the Android powered camera and printer in one

Android powered camera / printer makes sharing memories fun

Polaroid has taken an idea that many have had in the past, and they are bringing it to consumers with their latest creation, Socialmatic. This crazy looking device looks quite similar to the Instagram icon but it is actually a camera and printer, all in one. Beyond just being any camera, it is powered by Android, and on the back of the device it features a 4.5 inch touch screen to allow for easy navigation.

On the front of the device Polaroid has included a 13MP camera, and on the back there is a 2MP camera in case you really need to take yet another selfie. The Socialmatic will also include built in wifi, so sharing the pictures that you take on it to your favorite social media networks will be quick and easy.

One of the neatest parts of the device is that it features a built in printer which doesn't even require ink. Printing pictures is quick and easy making use of Polaroid's 2 X 3 inch ink-free paper which they call Zero Ink (ZINK) paper. The images that are printed are smudge-proof as well as being water and tear resistant.

No more snapping images on your mobile device of your family and having to email them off, instead you can just print them right then and there, with no worries.

Polaroid has yet to announce a price for the Socialmatic but they have stated that the device will ship in the fall of 2014, so we're going to have to wait a bit.

New Magellan navigation announced with Android OS running underneath

Navigation unit relies on Android to improve experience

In hopes to enhance the user experience and bring a more powerful navigation experience Magellan has released an all new Personal Navigation Device (PND) that has Android running underneath. The first of the units released will be the 5430T-LM which will feature a 5 inch display that they hope will offer the same touch screen controls as a mobile phone. If you have ever used a navigation unit before you have likely become frustrated when you pressed one thing and a different thing displayed.

"These new models will have the advantage of the Android operating system's superior handling of navigation data and Magellan's record of proven safety and performance," commented Stig Pedersen, associate vice president of product management at Magellan.
