AT&T to acquire Nextel Mexico for $1.875 billion

AT&T plans to acquire Nextel Mexico for $1.875 billion in an effort to create a massive North American Mobile Service area that will be able to offer wireless access to 400 million people. The news comes a few months after AT&T announced plans to buy another Mexico-based wireless carrier, Iusacell, for $2.5 billion.

Nextel Mexico has three million customers and its network covers 76 million people, according to AT&T. The company added:

Combining Nextel Mexico with Iusacell will allow AT&T to more quickly improve and expand its mobile Internet service to the benefit of millions of Mexicans, particularly those who live outside major metropolitan areas, than it could otherwise do without the transaction.

The deal is expected to close sometime in mid-2015.

  • Didn't Sprint lose a ton of money buying Nextel US?
  • Yup, but Nextel is not doing so badly in Mexico. Merging this with Iusacell places AT&T in a VERY interesting position in the Mexican market. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I don't think Sprint lost a ton of money in buying Nextel, they lost a ton of money in how they handled the buyout.
  • Spectrum was more valuable than the company. And they gained customers. Pretty sure they didn't lose Posted by my soon to be retired Note 3
  • I don't see anything positive coming out from this for consumers. Just wasted money that could've been used elsewhere. Letting big corps get bigger only helps stockholders (sometimes), I wonder what it'd take for another forced breakup. Posted from my HTC One M8 via Android Central App
  • That's because you don't know the mobile market here in México... We'd love to have AT&t instead of Telcel, which is the mayor carrier in here... For 40 bucks aprox Nextel offers 6GB of data, and unlimited calls (but they have poor coverage... For the same amount, Telcel offers 1.2 GB of data and 600 mins of calls... But we get signal almost everywhere... Having AT&T buying Nextel and Iusacell would improve the mexican market a lot.
  • For arond $45 I get 1000 minutes, 1000 SMS (what?), 4GB data and Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter "unlimited" with Telcel. But yes, this will improve even more the mexican market.
Bien por AT&T
