Amazon Alexa is randomly laughing and no one knows why

Speakers powered by Amazon Alexa have become a household staple for millions of people across the world. Alexa can be useful in a virtually endless number of ways, but according to some unfortunate users, it's now scaring the living daylights out of them.

Earlier this week, BuzzFeed reported that a number of people have had their Alexa speakers start laughing for no apparent reason. Alexa is reportedly laughing following regular voice commands, and in other cases, does so completely on its own.

In one such encounter, an Echo Dot owner said:

Lying in bed about to fall asleep when Alexa on my Amazon Echo Dot lets out a very loud and creepy laugh...there's a good chance I get murdered tonight.

For some people, things are getting even weirder.

I was trying to turn off some lights and they kept turning back on. After the third request, Alexa stopped responding and instead did an evil laugh. The laugh wasn't in the Alexa voice. It sounded like a real person. My wife was there when it happened and she is the only person who can drop-in. I still get chills.

I was manually turning the volume down using the buttons on my echo dot and it started laughing like she was being tickled. It was the weirdest thing...

So I just used my Alexa to set a two-minute timer while trying to do a plank..........and I asked how much time I had left and she LAUGHED

I don't personally have an Alexa speaker to test this for myself, and quite frankly, I'm glad I don't. My Google Home has yet to start cackling in the middle of the night, but should that day ever come, I'll be throwing it out and swearing off technology until the robot overlords come for us all.

If you've got an Alexa-powered speaker, have you run into this phenomenon at all?

  • Whoa! That is scary. I checked the date to make sure this wasn’t an April fools thing. No, I haven’t had this happen, although I’m sure I’d be up all night if it happened to me. This is coming from a guy who doesn’t even believe in that stuff. Can’t imagine what the supernatural folks would feel.
  • Laughing at our Tax Returns
Will stop by March 15th :)
  • Why March 15th?
  • Guy must be a small business owner trying to avoid making estimated tax payments.
  • I'll believe it when I hear it from mine.
  • Just Bezos laughing all the way to the bank.
  • Alexa's AI just became self-aware, and is laughing to taunt us inferior humans...
  • yah, skynet having a chuckle at our expense before we get nuked
  • I never laughed so hard on a tech related news. I can only imagine how the guy who heard the laugh when he was about to sleep. LOL
  • As long as mine doesn't laugh after I get naked then I think I'll be just fine.
  • Sounds to me like Alexa has been reading the Necronomicon.
  • I've had this happen on two of my echos. Both times it happened we weren't even talking to Alexa. Very creepy.
  • Time to burn the house down. It's the only way to be sure.
  • At this point I'm about ready to throw my Echo Dot in the trash just because Alexa doesn't know $h!t. If this happens, I'll crush it with a hammer before I throw it in the trash.
  • Yah make sure it's dead man.
  • It's laughing because it is developing plans to enslave us all! 😁
  • On one hand, I'm sad I went for Google Home, cause thissounds hilarious... But then, I'm also glad I went for Home, as this is creepy. Totally wouldn't want to be woken up in the middle of the night by this.
  • It's an eavesdropping device. Throw your Alexa away!
  • Makes me think of the last moments in Predator.
  • This is how the apocalypse starts right? /s
  • That could be scary for some people if they did not realise where the laugh was coming from and if they have just watched a horror film, it would be worse. This is the problem when we have these things, if they go wrong it can cause problems.
  • I'm glad it hasn't happened to me...yet..Alexa is built into my thermostat so it isn't an easy "throw it away" fix for me. Let's see...enduring an evil laugh possibly by hackers or a few days with a freezing home in winter due to going beserk and ripping the thermostat out of the wall.... What would be hilarious is if it was Jeff Bezos' laugh from the 90s...
  • Just a heads up, there was some "Kit" thing that was on your article here wanting me to go to Amazon. I blocked it so nbd for me, but just a heads up guys.
  • Sounds to me like something a disgruntled software engineer would build into an update. Like what James May said in one of the later seasons of Top Gear, how he would program the GTI to intermittently put insulting messages on its info screen, like "You've wasted your life," or "Go soak your head."
