Moto G getting Android 4.4.2 KitKat starting today!

I know right? :) that was fast for a non-nexus device (sorta) ......But then again, they are a Google® company. I'm surprised they updated it before the Moto X though.

~Merry Christmas!

I'm sure the moto x will get it quickly, and the moto g never got 4.4 and it probably wasn't much more work for Motorola to add the .0.0.2 update. This was an great device(regardless of price) with jellybean but now that it is running kit Kat which requires less Ram it must be even better.

G2

Google had nothing to do with this phone. Motorola Mobility is still run by Motorola employees.

Device: SGH-I317M running 4.3

Love my moto g. I'm thinking motos gunna be the company to go with. Good products with a slick user experience nearly vanilla and fast updates+ killer battery life. Just sad the S3 got the 4.3 before my s4 active.

I was under the assumption that the Moto G was only going to stay at Jelly Bean?

Posted via Samsung GS3 Wishing It Was A N5

And, why would you assume that? Have you read nothing about Motorola updating the Moto G to KitKat by January?

Posted via my "Gift from God" Nexus 5

Because of the specs of the phone. It being a low cost phone and all I figured it wouldn't move up in the OS department.

Posted via Android Central App

I am not really sure that you can expect 5.0, maybe another .X or two release but as you said it is a budget phone....

That's a fair assumption. But, Moto has even publicly stated that this device would be updated to KitKat. January was the original launch and timeframe for the update. But, it's not too surprising to see the update come sooner, as the launch surely did.

Posted via my "Gift from God" Nexus 5

They want to sell as many of these phones as possible. Updating it makes sense.

Ah, so then you've read absolutely nothing about either the Moto G or KitKat. You missed the fact that, on the day the device was announced and every day thereafter, Motorola has stated unequivocally that the G would get KitKat by January. In addition, you evidently read nothing about KitKat being optimized for low-end devices with as little as 512mb of RAM. In addition, despite the price point, I wouldn't call the internals of the Motorola G "low end" (except the camera) regardless of the price point.

Basically, I question what the hell brought you to this particular story in the first place. Go hang your head in shame and stick to iOS.

I wouldnt say they are all that low end, but definitely it is a 2 year old phone. See the comparison below. I am not knocking the phone. It is a great little phone at a great price. But lets call a spade a spade

It's better than a Nexus 4, a one year old phone, in most aspects. I'm not too sure why the comparison is with a GS3, a phone definitely not top-of-the-line when it was released.

Are you saying the Nexus 4 was not top of the line on release or the sgs3?

If you are saying the sgs3, your credibility is shot. It absolutely was and held up very strong all year long.

I would guess that it was phone of the year that year by a large margin across most tech sites.

I have no comment on the n4

Dammit man, I am a commenter not a clairvoyant!

I have both of them and honestly the snap dragon 400 out performs the s4pro in a lot of areas. The adreno 320 outshines the 305 on testing but otherwise the two devices are hard to distinguish in user experience. My wife enjoys the moto g more due to the excellent battery life. She had been using my old Nexus 4 for awhile. The moto g out benches the N4 on Antutu for all u benchers

"Because of the specs of the phone. It being a low cost phone and all I figured it wouldn't move up in the OS department."

These comments fucking KILL me. You are talking out of your ass, point blank.

The specs aren't low end. Its a fucking QUAD CORE CPU *with* a QUAD CORE GPU, with a 1GB of RAM. This device can run 4.4 and future versions just fine.

It technically has better specs than your plastic S3.

It is very low end, and you are comparing it to a 2 year old phone you realize that right?

It is a 400 Snapdragon (the high end is 800 with 805 around the corner)
it is one gig of ram - 3 gigs is high end
8/16 GB storage -- high end is 32/64
camera is a 5MP - high end is 20, but the norm is 8-13MP
GPU is 305 -- high end is 330
battery is 2070 -- right below high end and the norm is 2700
720X 1280 vs 1080X1920

A lot of those specs are behind the SGS3.

It is a great phone, but lets not dress it up here, it is leftover parts from 2011 that need to be liquidated. It is low end.

BTW - It is made of plastic as well...

Calm down, it is a phone

Its not meant to be compared to a damned past flagship phone!

Please STOP comparing this handset to older and newer flagship models!

It is an affordable phone with excellent specs at this market price point. End of.

Yet the Galaxy's are still laggy and I am u impressed with my s4. Back to the nexus. Touch wiz sucks. The new motos are so optimized its stupid. Compare specs if you like but these new motos are nearing the iPhone in smooth ness and blowing nearly everything away I'm real world battery life. And most of the numbers you mention are higher for a larger phone with higher res screen. You obviously haven't had one of these in your hand to see it for yourself. Moto has got it right here. I'm a believer

I'm 200% sure Motorola said it would have a guaranteed update to KitKat in/by January.

Posted via Android Central App

You know what they say about assumptions...

...people die. But really, the first thing they said after announcing the Moto G is that it's getting a Kitkat update by January.

If i'm a phone manufacturer and have KitKat for my phone, I would release with Jellybean, promise an update, then release KitKat within a month.

Now I'm the Good guy.

If the MOTO X and G released with KitKat, would we all be talking about them as if they are now the OEM to BE (OEM2B)?

....Who cares we got KitKat on an awesome phone!

Note to self get one of these phones.

I wonder if the update will be sent to Moto X's in the near future. I applaud Motorola for what they have been able to do, and have been sustaining will all the carriers.

Well I got my wife's moto g and the thing is truely great. She just went 30+hours without a charge and it had over 7hours of on screen time. 4.4 should only improve that! Kinda definitely a better experience than the nexus 4. Thing lasts maybe 8hours.

Posted via Android Central App

If it had a camera equal to the nexus 4 I think I'd jump over. Hopefully there'll be a new high end moto for the UK soon and that will be what I'll go for over a nexus 5.

Posted via Android Central App

Well I'm shooting identical images with them and honestly not drastically different. Both aren't great shooters but they get the job done. The N4 wins on face cam for sure but back cams are not drastically diff.

Posted via Android Central App

Wow, that's fast!!! Moto is getting better and better every day and I can't wait to see what is in store for them next year!!!

Posted via Android Central App

Amazon, its unlocked, who needs a carrier. Heck buy it straight from moto. I got mine within 3 days of order with overnight shipping ($10 more)

Posted via Android Central App

Hey Joe, why are you lying to this guy? He just joined recently and has to learn the proper way to do things.

You mash the update button for hours on end and come back to this thread and post everytime it says "your up to date". The you have to wade through all the posts about side loading and figure out it is not worth it.

Then you write one more post about how much Moto sucks and that you are never going to buy another Crappola or SamSuck again.

You have to teach these new guys or they will never learn...

OP: I am just kidding, it will come more sooner than later. Be patient

They will get over it, it's not even like it would be the first time

Dammit man, I am a commenter not a clairvoyant!

Gotta wait. Motorola is rollling it out one region at a time. It will take a couple of hours to a few days depending where you are.

My wife has had her G for a few days now. She loves it. She isn't a techie and wasn't thrilled about switching phones. She find the G easy to adapt to and even easier to work with. Good job, Motorola!

So does that mean 4.4.2 is coming to Moto X? The share bug is really annoying and I heard its fixed in 4.4.2

Motorola is packing their phones with very little crap on it that it doesn't take as long to update to a new version. They only have a few of their own software tweaks to make sure they work properly in order to update. Other manufacturers, SAMSUNG, have a bazillion things they have to make sure work properly before updating. And to do that with several phones at once because Samsung has a bazillion different phones, makes their updating time to an approximate bazillion × bazillion days to do so.

And even though I don't own a motorola phone, which I just might in the future now, GOOOOOOO MOTO!

Posted via Android Central App

Hint: Nobody beats T-Mobile/Samsung period!

I can't tell for sure, but I think he really really really loves T-Mobile and Samsung.

Posted via Android Central App

Oh well I'm not anti Samsung or anything. Lol I'm just saying that's part of the reason why the updates from different manufacturers are the way they are.

Contract up in July, looking like either Moto or Nexus outright when it's time.

Posted from my Nexus 7 2013 via Android Central App

Had a gut feeling that Google would be prompt with updates on this phone and is a major reason for getting it over the competition.

Uhhhh this pisses me off.. what about the note 3,.The lg g2? You know, high end phones that have already been out. Not low end devices

Posted via Android Central App

You misspelled samtastic!

Dammit man, I am a commenter not a clairvoyant!

If you bought one of those devices expecting timely updates, then you purchased said device for the wrong reason.

Motorola is owned by Google, and together, they chose to push out this update. The manufacturer of your chosen device and your carrier of choice are the reason why you don't have the newest version of Android.

Plus, as the poster above me noted, Motorola has started using a near stock UI, which makes pushing updates a lot easier.

Posted via my "Gift from God" Nexus 5

The game is changing, and the others hopefully will change as well.

Besides, it has always been 3-4 months for this kind of thing to rollout. 4.4 has nothing that is a must have, and up to. 2 is Nexus fixes.

As has been said, you bought a phone for what it is, not what it will be.

That being said, anything outside of 4 months is criminal for 2013 carrier branded phones. LG is really gonna put that to the test if they hold the schedule they announced.

Samsung I get. They are really the only ones to support a phone for really 2 years. They are getting the 4.3 out the door to everything, like the Note 2,sgs3 and phones along those lines.

4.3 this month, 4.4.2 next month

motorola promised and delievered. So far very everything speaks for motorola and keeping there promises. Thats how u make friends.

Saw a comment in a Facebook post from Motorola that said that they'll have more info about the Moto X 4.4 update starting 2014 :( So I guess Moto G users in Mexico will have to wait even more :((.

Posted via Android Central App

I can't wait to get the update and to see how kitkat performs on it primarily to see if google is right

Sent from my Nexus 7 2013 or Moto G

Holy Shit, my Moto X isn't even the most up to date Motorola phone any more

I'm assuming they could do this so quickly because the G is even less skinned then the X?

Motorola gets it for sure! now there's really no excuse to be settling for crappy cheap low spec phones that have soiled the Android experience for so long. You know the ones, the ones still rocking GB, the ones usually thrown at unsuspecting noobs looking for a bargain.

Posted via Android Central App

I hope OEM's are taking notice to what Google and Motorola have done lately and improve upon it.

Here in South Florida got it last night with a regular update check in settings. Just keep checking. It'll go blank for a sec when you get it because the window with the info is a popup..good luck! Tell me how you feel about the network icon. They removed the traffic arrows :-(
