HTC Vanguard (Vision/G2?) to be released Sept. 29?

 HTC Vanguard

There's been some talk about the HSPA+ HTC G2 being released in September, and TmoNews has got hold of some screenshots that puts the date as September 29 for the release of the Vanguard.  What does the Vanguard have to do with the G2?  I'm glad you asked.  If you rip open the leaked G2 ROM we saw recently (or grab it already done for you here), you will see references to the Vanguard, such as in the devices name for the static wallpapers (also pulled out for you here).

If things don't change (and they often do), look for the G2, codenamed the Vanguard, running stock Froyo, with an all new chip on the 29th of September.  So who's excited for this besides me? [TmoNews]

TeleNav introduces OnMyWay for Android

 On My Way

TeleNav has released its OnMyWay application for Android in the Market. OnMyWay is an easy-to-use application that will let a person or group know your travel status and estimated arrival time.  Very popular on the BlackBerry platform, this should prove to be a popular item and a must have for travellers.  Buy another bag of ice for the cooler, Phil -- looks like I'm going to be late.

After the break we have the app's description as a mini press release from TeleNav, a video showing it in action, and the download links.

Froyo update for the Evo 4G is now rootable

Evo Froyo root method

The Froyo (Android 2.2) update for the Evo 4G has been rooted.  While the current method is a bit hairy and involves timing and a bit of luck, the directions look very straightforward, and more important, not too dangerous to your precious hardware.  The method is a mix of the recent exploit used on the Droid 2 and tools from the UnrEVOked team, and should leave you with a fully rooted and bootloader unlocked Evo, ready for your choice of a custom ROM.

Remember, this sort of thing breaks warranties and has the potential to ruin things, even if this method looks fairly safe.  Proceed at your own risk, or wait it out a few days to see if an easier method rolls around -- nobody here will blame you. But you trailblazers, hit the source link to give it a go!  [xda-developers] Thanks Chuck!

Galaxy Tab video preview shows up in Korea

Galaxy Tab

Sick of seeing videos of Samsung's Galaxy Tab yet? Neither are we. A new video preview of the Android device that will be introduced on Sept 2 has popped up in Korea. The clip is nearly 3 minutes long and provides some great looks at the 7-inch device. In the video, the user shows off the size versus an iPad, uses Swype with the notepad app, watches video, reads a newspaper article and looks at Google Maps.

It looks like a great device, especially if the price point is significantly lower than Apple's tablet. More questions loom however, such as:

  • Are there other connectors besides the apparent proprietary one shown in the videos?
  • Will there be a Wi-Fi only version?

These and other questions will be answered in Berlin on Sept. 2nd (we hope), and we'll be there to bring it all to you. Enjoy the video after the break in the meantime. [Engadget]

Sept. 9 a possible launch date for the Verizon Fascinate, tie-in with MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 12

Verizon Fascinate ship date

Where, oh where, is the Verizon Fascinate? We've been waiting for the final U.S. version of the Samsung Galaxy S to hit (and watching our hands-on with it over and over), and it looks like it might be in a couple short weeks. This screen from Verizon -- it actually has to do phones provided to Verizon employees -- shows "Device shipping around 9/6 based on a 9/9 launch." Add to that the fact that the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards -- taking place Sept. 12 -- are sponsored in part by the "Samsung Fascinate - A Galaxy Phone," (thanks, orcares) and it seems like we're getting pretty darn close.

That could well just be a 9/9 "launch" for employees, but that's on odd term to use just for that, right? And with all that said, the usual caveat about not counting our chickens before they hatch, but the Fascinate can't get into our fat little fingers soon enough.

(And, yes, that's the Microsoft KIN that's mentioned there. Verizon's trying to get it out of its employees' pockets, and we certainly can't blame them.)

Droid Incredible Froyo update: Benchmark, full details, screenshots (Update: Plus, a possible OTA date)

Droid Incredible Froyo quadrant benchmark

We're getting tons more info from you guys regarding the Droid Incredible Froyo update, which appeared in a leaked RUU this morning and is still expected (eventually) as an over-the-air update. Let's start with the Quadrant benchmark you see above. (Thanks, Jim!) It's certainly not the be all-end all of a phone's speed and power (and, yes, it can be manipulated), so take it for what it's worth.

Then we've got the full rundown of what's new in the update (straight from Verizon), including Adobe Flash Player 10.1 pre-installed, 720p video recording, Wifi 802.11n, and so on.

Plus, we've got a screen shot showing that the over-the-air push may begin tomorrow. (For what it's worth, that date also is confirmed by a tipster to Droid-Life.)

And after the break, we've got even more screen shots (thanks again, Jim). And if you haven't already, see what everybody's saying about the update in our forums.

Ad in Mississippi spotted, shows Android soaring through (an) Apple

Android ad

The Android vs. iPhone battle continues to rage on in forums, articles and between friends who sport competing devices. The war in the ad space has been continued on as an advertisement in Grenada, Miss., was spotted that shows Android soaring right through the middle of an Apple (subtle isn't it?)

Nevertheless, the ad is amusing and will likely be met by cheers from the Android community and jeers from the iOS folks. [Thanks to @StormTrooper626]

Droid Incredible's Sept. 1 Froyo rumor a bust, but is the RUU out there already? (Updated with screen shots, root link)

Droid Incredible ROM

ROM legend Conflipper may be in retirement, but that doesn't mean there's not still magic to be had, as a new ROM for the Droid Incredible has surfaced, and guess what -- it purportedly is Android 2.2 Froyo. And that's nice to see, as the Sept. 1 rumor that Droid-Life started late last night was quickly retracted (don't say we didn't warn you).

Sing out if you're brave and gave it a shot. [Shipped-ROMs via Android Central Forums and XDA Developers]

Update: A couple of screen shots posted after the break. (Thanks, Jim!) Plus, here's a link to a method to load and root.

Sprint Epic 4G user manual

G2 confirmed to use MSM7x30 CPU; other new devices rumored to as well

Cyanogen tweet on G2 board files

According to files inside the leaked engineering test ROM for the G2 that recently showed itself, the phone is confirmed to be using a MSM7x30 Snapdragon processor, which has the high-octane Adreno 205 GPU on board.  That's the same graphics chip that the Glacier was showing off a few weeks back.  That really fast one. Yeah.

Speaking of the Glacier, we also got a tip that some upcoming hardware will be running the 7x30 board as well, namely the Glacier itself, the Speedy, the Blitz, the Mecha, and the Spade.  But like a Froyo rumor, things like this often change.  [@cyanogen via Android and Me] Thanks Adwin!

Target is rolling out 'Target Mobile' to a store near you

Next time when you visit the electronics department at a Target near you, don't be surprised when you see another guy or gal working the department that isn't dressed in red and khaki. Target and RadioShack are officially joining forces to bring Target Mobile to guests all over the country. Target Mobile is a "convenient and simplified cell phone shopping experience both in-store and online."

The bullseyed logoed company announced that by the end of this year (2010 for those of you not keeping track), 850 stores will have these mobile centers in their stores. By mid-2011 -- before the world ends in 2012 -- Target is ultimately planning to have these centers in majority of their stores nationwide. But if you're not quite the in-store shopper, the Minneapolis-based corporation, has also launched an online store:; being maintained and Target-branded by Simplexity.

This isn't the first time we've seen retailers and network carriers link up to bring more cell phone options other then just pre-paid phones to customers; or as Target likes to call them -- Guests. Hey, who knows, you might even buy your next Android device when you're shopping around buying some Mossimo jeans or some Archer Farms cookies. What do you guys think? Will this be a success or a failed attempt? Sound off in the comments section and let us know what you think. [Target]

Samsung Galaxy Tab caught on video again, this time for a close-up

Samsung Galaxy Tab

If these videos of the Samsung Galaxy Tab get any better, you might not have to go all the way to Germany in a couple of weeks to get a real look at the thing. Samsung's 7-inch Android tablet will be announced at the IFA conference in Berlin on Sept. 2, but GizChina got video of someone sneaking up on it. The OS definitely has an iPad-ish feel, but we're going to withhold judgment until we actually use the thing. Check it out after the break. [GizChina via Crunchgear]

Motorola MB520 Kobe breaks cover, may be codenamed 'Diablo'

Motorola Kobe/Diablo

We're trying real hard to decide whether to be happy that we're looking at leaked pictures of the Motorola MB520 Kobe, or sad in that see the return of old-school Motoblur. The horribly blurry pictures match up with the "About" screen that popped up last week, and we see a pretty well-rounded phone. Other than that? We're going to hope for some sort of magic UI overhaul before (and if) this thing ever hits AT&T. [Engadget]
