  • Sony announced on Wednesday that over 10 million PS5 units have been sold so far.
  • This makes the PS5 the fastest-selling PlayStation console ever.
  • Sony also provided sales updates on numerous games, including Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.

On Wednesday, Sony provided an update on PS5 unit sales and several sales milestones for major games released so far. Sony confirmed that PS5 sales crossed 10 million units sold, a major accomplishment that cements the PS5 as the fastest-selling PlayStation console ever.

Speaking with, Sony shared updates on multiple exclusive titles, stating that Insomniac Games' Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold over 6.5 million copies, Housemarque's Returnal is over 560,000 copies sold and finally, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is over 1.1 million copies sold.

"Engagement on the platform is the highest that we've ever seen whichever way you look at it," Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan says. The now-multiplatform MLB The Show 21 is over 2 million copies sold, with over 4 million players in total, largely thanks to its launch on Xbox Game Pass.

"Whether it's the number of people measured by a metric such as MAU, or whether it's the time that these people spend playing games. Both of these metrics are showing very significant double-digit growth compared to the launch window of PS4, the previous high-water mark," Ryan adds.

More games from Sony Worldwide Studios are on the way, with Horizon Forbidden West tentatively slated for Holiday 2021, while the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7 were both previously delayed into 2022.

PS5 supply remains in question, though Sony notes it is working to increase PS5 restocks until supply is at a point where anyone who wants one can purchase it without issue.

  • Yeah, well, that's not hard when you don't have the console for sale anywhere other than 1 or 2 countries. Of course your pathetically low supplies will go fast and become the "fastest selling PlayStation". Limited quantities + scalpers = fast sales. As for the claims of "Sony notes it is working to increase PS5 restocks"...restocking would imply there was stock to begin with. Here in Europe, there's no stock. Ever. We simply don't receive anything from Sony at all.
  • So much this. I can't help but look at these stats as just a slap in the face to the customer.
  • 9 million of those consoles went to scalpers.
  • Is it true that the PS5 won't be getting any Fallout or Elder Scrolls games?
  • I fought with Wal-mart's website for a solid 30 minutes to buy my digital edition. Then lucked out and was part of the over-sell group that ended up with a disc edition for no extra charge! I think Sony should make all stores go the Target route, and require in store pickup for all PS5 sales, to help reduce scalpers and bots.
