Update, July 29 (02:00 pm ET): A new report pegs the U.S. variant of the OnePlus Nord as having a Snapdragon 690!

What you need to know

  • The OnePlus Nord has launched in the UK and India to rave reviews.
  • A new report says it would be coming to the U.S. soon.
  • If true, OnePlus will be selling it alongside the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro as a budget option.

The OnePlus Nord may be coming to the U.S. after all, according to a report from Wired. Tucked into the publication's Nord review, Wired noted CEO Carl Pei as saying a "Nord-branded phone (not necessarily the same as this) is set to land on U.S. shores later this year." If that's the case, the OnePlus Nord (or A OnePlus Nord at the least) may end up competing against other midrangers including the rumored Pixel 4a, Galaxy A71, and the Apple iPhone SE.

The Nord launched this week to rave reviews, with praise being given for OnePlus managing to provide a flagship-lite experience without dipping the specs so low that the phone felt cheap.

Writing for Android Central, reviewer Harish Jonnalagadda said:

What OnePlus has managed to achieve with the Nord is commendable. You don't miss out on any of the core features that make OnePlus' flagships stand out, and that makes the Nord a particularly great option if you're looking to buy a phone for under $500 in 2020.

A big ding on an otherwise great phone was its lack of U.S. availability. Soon, that may turn out to have been a non-issue.

Update, July 29 (2:00 pm ET) — The upcoming Nord may have a Snapdragon 690

A report from XDA Developers places the OnePlus Nord coming to the U.S as a cheaper Snapdragon 690 equipped model. If true, it'll still keep 5G but it won't perform as well as the "real" Nord. Whether anyone will care given the phone's other benefits is another matter entirely.

  • Average 📷 's, no surprise with one plus. A 2mp macro zoom that appears pretty useless. No North American 😕 release. It maybe a good phone but I really have no interest. I'd rather wait for the pixel4a, at least the 📷 's will be really good. If it has 6gb's of ram & 128gb's of storage I can deal with alittle weaker processer, the 730!
  • I almost spit out my coffee... Compete against the Pixel 4a 🤣 Did that phone even exist?
