LG V20: Google gives us our first look at Nougat-powered phone

As Google officially unveiled Android 7.0 Nougat, there's a small surprise waiting on the shiny new Nougat promo page — an early look at the upcoming LG V20.

The V20, which will be the first phone to ship with Android 7.0, is referenced at the end of the page, along with an image showing a home screen and a holographic-style outline of the handset. The image is broadly in line with CAD renders that leaked a couple of weeks back showing a modular, G5-like design.

Google hails the device as "the first new smartphone that comes with Android Nougat, right out of the box. Coming soon."

The home screen itself mirrors what we've already seen on the LG G5, with a app-drawer-free layout and rounded rectangular icons. Beyond that, there's not a whole lot to see here.

However it is unusual to see Google promoting LG's phone alongside its new operating system. In the absence of any new Nexus phones — those aren't expected for another month or two — it's a natural fit. LG is set to officially unveil the V20 at an event in San Francisco on Sept. 6.

  • Check out uh Doze on the Go on promo? Look at the side of that phone Hmmm
  • That looks like new Nexus on Promo page look at the lines and the small nav bar. I could be wrong cause i dont see the flower buttons either. Who knows
  • What are we supposed to be looking at? It's a Nexus 6P.
  • That's LG's skin.
  • Talking about a different photo, not the one in this article.
  • The softkeys buttons on LG's interfaces are so ugly! Like do they really have to make them gargantuan like that? Geez -__-
  • I hope your a woman. In my book only women are concerned with stuff so trivial
  • Given your comment I'm assuming you have very little interaction with women.
  • I never spoke to one in my life.
As a matter of fact, my two kids were delivered by a stork

  • Cool. Well, while you're reading your self-written book, I'll be over here in 2016 where most of us have moved on from such ignorance.

  • A quick look at even the status icons at the top seems to indicate that they're sticking with a density for blind. The one thing I've never liked about LG phones is the screen density. It's so huge! It's like lowering the resolution for no reason!
  • Same. The density on LG's UI is just too damn big. I'm not old, LG. I have good eyesight. Give me the option to make things smaller like on stock Nougat and Samsung devices running the S7 + Note7 version of the TouchWiz UI. I want more stuff on-screen, not make things bigger.
  • If it's anything like the V10 it's going to be awesome Posted via the Android Central App
  • I hope it is. I'm looking forward to replacing my v10 with it!
  • I hope you get whatever you desire!
  • Hopefully it won't be anything like the V10 in terms of battery life.
  • If they keep a design that is similar to the V10, then I agree. From what I have glimpsed so far, I'm kind of bracing myself for a much longer wait for the V30 Posted via the Android Central App
  • Hey AC, squashing bugs is needed for your app. Everytime I go to post, I'm required to sign in. Everytime
  • Yes!!!!!!!!! that's why I'm on a old apk Posted via Android Central App
  • I thought it was my phone
  • I did too I sideloaded a apk from mid 2015
    Fixed it outright

  • I also must repeatedly sign in just to be able to see threads with new posts appear in bold face. Apparently the AC team has been too busy with Pokémon Go articles to bother paying attention to their app. I am running N DP5 - that may be the problem (for me anyway).
  • Same here. It's terrible.
  • Yeah. Even for posting this comment I logged in. Lol

  • Unfortunately, as it will offer 4 GB of RAM, it will be too much like the V10. The only big upgrades will be the SOC (I admit an 808 to an 820 is a huge jump) and the modularity feature that will give me the "privilege" of spending $300 for a smartphone add-on. Getting the V-10 half price when this thing launches may be a better deal.
  • Why do you need more than 4GB of RAM? RAM jumps don't happen every single year. It takes a few years, typically, before the need for more becomes that vital.
  • turbofool is the type of fool that asks a foolish question like why do you need more than 4GB of RAM then runs right out and buy the 6GB of RAM device as soon as it becomes available
  • What? That makes no sense. I'll buy a phone with 6GB of RAM if the phone, overall, is the best for my needs. At this point the most RAM I've had in a phone was 3GB, and it was fine. 2GB is too little now. 4GB is probably our sweet spot. 6GB, as OnePlus figured out ironically, results in reduced battery life from too many applications staying resident at once. I'm sure it'll become necessary at some point, but likely not in any device shipping with it now. But they're already available. Haven't touched them. My next phone will have 4GB.
  • so what are the two devices under the battery saving and security headings? v20 or the HTC nexus?
  • If it's a G5 clone then look at other devices.
  • Quite unusual for Google to promote non-stock Andorid phones like LG's.
  • Want
  • Dammit Google where are the new Nexus phones at? Be ancient hardware if they only come in 2 months time. Seriously, the Snapdragon 830 will be out then.
  • Even though there will be no 830 this year but OK Posted via Android Central App
  • LG first with the Snapdragon 810, V20 first with Android N, first with Snapdragon 823 (Flex 3) They got balls to be firstest Posted via the Ferrari of Smartphones: LG Flex 2
  • First with the boot loop!! ...luvin my s7 edge
  • Also first with a QHD screen on a phone

  • Sadly, the average consumer won't care what operating system it's running and the V20 will fall short of Samsung and Apple like it does every year. It sucks too because I truly enjoy LG phones.
  • Modular? Again? Pass. Note 7 it is.
  • Just because of modular and DAC I'll take V20 before N7. With this hardware and running N out of box , I see no need to upgrade my phone for a few years and what makes me comfortable with V20 is not all the "gimmicky" modules they offer, but removable battery. With my heavy use, phones run out of juice in about a year or less and this way for extra 20 bucks I'll have my phone last as long as on the day one. Plus, it's always nice to recharge to 100% in 5 seconds :)
And the idea that I can carry around such a powerful music player... might save me thousands on fancy system at home :))
  • It will be between the V20 and the Asus ZenFone 3 Ultra for me. Battery life and camera are the most important factors to me, and it will be hard to beat the V10's camera. But the the Ultra has a 6.8' screen and a massive battery. It just remains to be seen whether it will get a US release.
  • Wow, just looked up that Ultra. Is that coming to the US? If so, I'm IN!! I have been waiting for a huge phone for years.
  • I hope so! But there's no word yet.
  • Xperia Z Ultra.
Large screen seems like a great idea.
The novelty wears off the first time you have to change your clothes because it won't fit into a pocket..or take a call (mitigated with a BT headset sure..)
  • I had the Lumia 1520 and original Nexus 6. No problems whatsoever. Except the screen was too small on both.
  • Hm, wonder if the DPI on LG's UI has been scaled back a bit this time.
  • I'm on the note 5 now. I liked the v10 and would've got it last year, but my note 5 was a gift. The v20 here looks very enticing! They're a lot better at updates then Asus. Posted via the Android Central App

  • "Google 'introduces' new LG phone on Nougat promo page." Isn't this Google's equivalency of dumping your wife (Huawei), marrying another (HTC) while having another girl on the side (LG)
  • Very good.LOL. Posted via the Android Central App
  • LG has proved to be the ideal sweetheart to Google, so Nougat debuts on the V20 first!? Posted via the Android Central App
  • You are correct, because LG mobile is in poor shape, even if LG,as a whole,is doing ok.HTC is also in very bad shape, and Huawei looked at the 6p as an entryway to the west. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Back button still on the wrong side etc.
  • i really enjoyed my v10 except for the screen, the brightness was terrible compared to other phones i owned.
  • The V10 was pretty sleek. Curious to see what they came up with for the V20 Posted via my LG G3 here in Canada eh
  • I'm never going back to anything else that is not a nexus!
  • It does look pretty sweet!
