Pebble smartwatch on sale for $120 at Amazon and Best Buy

31

Heads up, folks: If you're still looking to get a Pebble smartwatch, Amazon currently has them on sale for $120 — that's 20 percent off the full retail price. Best Buy does, too. We've no idea how long that price will last, and it's only good for the black or red colors.

While you're at it, be sure to read through our Pebble roundtable for our take on the wearable.

Thanks, Caleb!

Motorola reminds us that we still don't have wooden backs for the Moto X

42

Maybe Motorola are growing their own trees

Motorola has taken to Twitter to once again tell us that wooden backs for the Moto X aren't ready. Shown off at the launch event, and talked about every few weeks since, the wooden backed versions are the new Unicorn from Motorola.

Put this DIY project on hold. Trust us.

We've been trusting you, Moto. A little less "coming soon" and a little more wooden backs in Moto Maker is what we want now.

Get your new Kindle Fire HDX and pay for it over time with Amazon's new installment plan

13

Four equal payments and no hidden fees make for a great way to get a new Kindle HDX

We've talked about the Kindle Fire HDX tablets before. If you're looking for a great way to consume content from Amazon — that means music, books, movies, audiobooks, the web and apps — there is no better way. They have displays to die for, are absolutely fluid and smooth because of the Snapdragon 800 inside them, deliver great sound and are built well. They aren't a typical Android tablet in any way, but no tablet from any company is better for reading or watching video.

And now, you can get them on four payments.

Amazon has a new deal where you pay one installment to get your Kindle HDX, then pay three more 90 days apart. Each installment is 25 percent of the total plus tax for the same exact Kindle as if you paid it all up front. The $229 7-inch version will cost $57.25 every 90 days, and the $379 8.9-inch version comes in at $94.75 per installment. There are no finance charges, no interest, and no credit check.

There are a few restrictions, though. Folks from Washington, DC or Florida need not apply, and you have to have been an Amazon customer for two years. In addition, you need to have a credit card on file that expires no earlier than March 2014 — no debit cards are accepted.

If you're interested, know that you need to order by December 24, and this is only valid while supplies last. Visit the link below for all the fine print.

The Nexus 7 Folio case

19

A solid case with a few neat tricks, but how can it ever be worth the price?

Google is no stranger to releasing disproportionately expensive accessories for its inexpensive devices. Since the days of the Nexus 4, you've been paying a premium to have an official "Google" accessory from the Play Store. The Nexus 7 Folio, the latest $49 case from Google for your tablet, falls right in line with that history.

The first thing you'll notice about this new accessory is that it follows much the same design (and two of the same colors) as the recently-released Nexus 5 Bumper Case, although this offering is ironically more of a "bumper" than what's available for the phone. The Nexus 7 Folio will cover just the edges of your tablet, with either the back or front protected by a flip cover, depending on whether you're using the device or not.

Let's see if it's worth your investment.

From the Editor's Desk: Shut up and buy this phone

237

After what's felt like forever, I've finally gotten my hands on the Moto G. Four of them, actually (look for a pre-Christmas giveaway this week), and one thing is immediately clear:

Motorola gets it.

That's not to say there aren't any number of great Android smartphones out there. I'd still recommend the HTC One any day of the week. Or the LG G2. Or the Samsung Galaxy S4. Or the Moto X, of course. There are plenty of other great choices, too, particularly if you don't mind either paying outright or locking into another contract with a carrier.

But for $199 — off contract, out the door — you simply can't do better right now.

Nine minutes on SIM unlocking your smartphone

20

A bit of big (albeit nerdy) news last week came from the FCC and CTIA, wherein the governmental entity in charge of all those public airwaves and the wireless industry's advocacy group announced a set of standards for allowing us (the customers) to SIM unlock our phones.

Theoretically, that's a big deal because removing those locks is the first step in being able to use any phone on any network here in the United States.

But as we talked about on our most recent podcast, it's maybe more a symbolic victory than anything else. Technical hurdles still remain. Have a listen.

T-Mobile nearing deal to buy 700MHz spectrum from Verizon

72

In return, Verizon to receive cash and AWS spectrum in certain markets

T-Mobile could potentially be ready to wrap up a big deal for some of Verizon's spectrum. According to a report from Bloomberg, the carriers are nearing a deal to transfer 700MHz "A block" spectrum from Verizon to T-Mobile for somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 billion. Verizon initially purchased the 700MHz spectrum in 2008 for $2.6 billion. Further, the deal may also see T-Mobile transferring some AWS (that's 1700/2100MHz) spectrum to Verizon for certain markets.

If approved by the FCC, the 700MHz spectrum transfer would be applicable to about 150 million people, indicating that this would be quite a large pickup for T-Mobile. The nation's fourth-place carrier currently holds spectrum in the 1900MHz and AWS bands, which is less expensive and fully functional, but can't always penetrate buildings in dense cities properly.

Adding 700MHz could be just what T-Mobile needs to round out its network offerings, so long as it plans to have the spectrum for a good amount of time and starts to deploy devices that support the frequencies. Sources claim the deal could be finalized as soon as next week.

Netflix finally adds profile support on Android

30

Share an account, but keep your libraries separate

The latest Netflix app update in the Play Store has a short changelog, but what's there has been a long time coming. That's right, proper profile support has made its way to Android after being available on practically every other platform, and Netflix users are going to be extremely happy about that fact.

No more handling of multiple accounts, and no more mixing of suggestions when you have a few different people sharing an account or device. Just see your most recent movies and shows completely separate from the others using the account. We're sure more than a few of you have been waiting for this one — snag the update from the Play Store link above.

Apps of the Week: Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Division Cell, Weather Underground and more!

31

Another full list of games and tools to try this weekend

Another week is behind us, and that means it's time to cap it off with another Apps of the Week post. Each week we take up a slot of time on Saturday afternoon to list an app that each of the folks here at Android Central have been using, and give a little explanation of why it's something we use. Not every app will be new or buzz-worthy, but if we're using it, we're going to tell you about it.

This week's list has a few different games (what else is the weekend for?) highlighted by another weather app that may just hit the spot for you. Read along with us after the break and see how the list stacks up.

Google purchases robotics firm Boston Dynamics

94

Are you ready for super-evil robots that will take over the planet in some sort of cybernetic revolt? I sure am.

We probably won't see maniacal robo-wargs that will swoop in and destroy all humans, but if we ever do, the two companies that could make it happen just got cozy. Google has announced that they have purchased Boston Dynamics, creators of terror the Big Dog and PETMAN, for an undisclosed sum. I'll speculate that it was 100 Billion Dollars. Not really.

All jokes aside, Boston Dynamics have the knack to make robots that are agile, strong and sturdy instead of fragile pieces of metal that need coddling. The kind of robots that could do stuff instead of just look pretty in a lab. Check out the WildCat — and hope it never chases you.

What does this mean? We have no idea. Andy Rubin is Google's new robot overlord, so I imagine he has some sort of plan for this. We can only hope that it's peaceful.

The Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition and the Magnetic Charging Dock make a (mostly) great team

17

While things aren't perfect, docking the Z Ultra GPe makes for a nice desk or bedside clock or Daydream frame

It's been a while since we had a Nexus or "Nexus-like" device with an official accessory dock. The Galaxy Nexus was made better with it's dock, even though Samsung wanted far too much money for it. If you ended up buying one, you know what I mean. Having your device sit docked at your desk or on your nightstand was handy, and the fact that things worked well between the phone and the dock made it easy. We like easy.

We were really happy to find out the Sony Magnetic Charging Dock works pretty well — and is just as easy — with the Z Ultra Google Play edition.
