Mesh Wi-Fi networks are essential if you want good wireless coverage in a larger home/apartment, and while the market for these routers is huge, Eero has managed to stick out as one of the best options out there. As of February 11, 2019, it's confirmed that Amazon is buying the company.

In a press release issued by Amazon, Senior Vice President of Amazon Devices and Services, Dave Limp, said:

We are incredibly impressed with the Eero team and how quickly they invented a WiFi solution that makes connected devices just work. We have a shared vision that the smart home experience can get even easier, and we're committed to continue innovating on behalf of customers.

As for how Eero's reacting to the news, here's what its CEO and Co-Founder, Nick Weaver, said:

From the beginning, eero's mission has been to make the technology in homes just work. We started with WiFi because it's the foundation of the modern home. Every customer deserves reliable and secure WiFi in every room. By joining the Amazon family, we're excited to learn from and work closely with a team that is defining the future of the home, accelerate our mission, and bring Eero systems to more customers around the globe.

Around this time last year, Amazon made a similar deal with its acquisition of smart doorbell-maker Ring. Add that together with this new purchase and the company's own efforts with its Echo and Fire TV devices, and it's obvious that Amazon's serious about tackling smart hardware in every way that it can.

It's undisclosed how much Amazon is paying for Eero, but for what it's worth, the company paid $1 billion for Ring last year.

  • sure would make things easier if amazon adds alexa to the eero mesh routers. I have been considering a mesh system for my home but running out of table space and outlets.
  • The better to spy on you.
  • Exactly TRUE lmao
  • Will Amazon block YouTube if you use their router.
Just joking though it does worry me buying a router from any specific company like Amazon or Google as it could easily become proprietary.
  • Guess I won't be buying their products then
  • Just another company I won't buy from then. I am not about to be locked into Amazon's ecosystem
  • Easier for Bezos to send his D**k pics to people... seriously though, eventually these companies will get too big and they will have to be broken up. The privacy issue is a huge problem and needs to be addressed. Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. They are taking over. We need a bipartisan solution here in the USA. No fighting just because Trump is the President. This hurts all of us...
  • Netgear Orbi for the win.
