Motorola Droid update

OK, folks. Here's where we stand. We still haven't heard anything official from Motorola regarding the Android 2.1 update for the Droid, and considering the PR whoopsie that's been experienced the  past few days, we're probably not likely to. (That said, now would be a perfect time for Motorola to just come out and let us know what happened, and that they're working on it.)

Anyhoo, as you can see above, a memo released this morning to Verizon employees says that the update is "expected to roll out soon." Basically what we've been told was that Motorola expected the updated to clear Verizon's testing process. If you're new around here, know that Verizon is infamous for its testing of hardware and software. We've seen entire phones never see the light of day because of it.

So what does "Expected to roll out soon" mean? It could be that the update has passed testing and is really going to roll out soon. Or it could just be the usual PR speak that has us running in circles. But we'll take what we can get. And it's heartening to know that they're still working on it, so we can ignore a lot of the "No update for the Droid!" FUD that's floating around out there. Thanks, tipster!

Verizon employees told Droid 2.1 update is 'expected to roll out soon'

I'm under the impression that VZW employees don't get to know things until right before they happen typically. I've read reviews across the internet (mostly from displeased employees) stating that they get all their training and update information LAST MINUTE! (Usually within 3-5 days before a product or software hits the public)

-Pure speculation based on loose internet research and word of mouth-

You are right. Im a employee and we dont get it tll a few days before(Like our plan change trainings were the day before and day of so it wasnt leaked) and sometimes not everyone gets trained in time. (Kinda sucks when that happens)

Only reason its like that its because people take pictures of our computer like this person did and leaks shit! (This isnt really leaking anything but if it said it was confidential(like it does at the bottom cause i read that today) and said some sort of update with the fixes and update number im sure this picture still would have been taken.)

This is the same comment, word for word, that Motorola has been dishing out for the past few days. Nothing new. I guess they want Verizon to start giving out the same speech to sound more consistent. Nothing new yet.

Based on the previously leaked report, it seems as though the 5 home screens and the 3d app drawer are going to be missing along with the active wallpapers. Don't know if there is anything else missing. Since the document was retracted we don't know if they will add them or if more features will be removed.

I really hate to do this...but i think it is fair to say we can see this update early next week. Verizon wouldn't being telling their employees if this was not the case...again...this is just me speculating :)

I hope so! It's not like the Eris isn't awesome just because it has 1.5 but it would even more awesome with 2.1 (:

This should have posted here...not above...

I hope so! It's not like the Eris isn't awesome just because it has 1.5 but it would even more awesome with 2.1 (:

Just fucking release it already! Getting tired of all this speculation lol
Do EVERYONE A FAVOR and release 2.1 already

Please,
Jorge Olivera

Definately anxiously waiting but over it also things are being held up by somebody. I love my moto droid but it seems like htc has their act together a little better

As it seems, the 2.1 has been approved by big red, now their just preparing the ota. Which is hopefully this week.

Not entirely... If you read the screenshot, it says "The DROID by Motorola OTA software upgrade". Nowhere in that screenshot does it say 2.1.

For all we know, it could be 2.0.2, or 2.2.

At this point, I really couldn't care less, just from all of the sheer stupidity I've been reading in teh internets from fellow owners. When the little bubble pops up on my screen, I'll click it, and I'll get a software update.

k tks bai!

It took us awhile here at VZW, but we finally killed off alot of those "features" everyone has been complaining about. You won't have to worry about crazy live wallpapers killing your battery or a confusing change to your app drawer. Trust us, we handled that. Oh and to make your expereince more simplistic and not overcomplicate you, we are going to make sure you only have 3 screens to deal with, 5 would just be a lilttle more then you people can handle. Just remember here a VZW we know what we..I mean you people want and you will be getting it soon! (allow 4-6 weeks for testing and delivery)

you, sir, are grossly misinformed. google calls the shots here, not verizon, not even motorola (with the exception of optimization and hardware drivers) - the droid is a google experience phone. now, the 2.1 update - i'd like you to point out to me where in the API changelogs it lists 5 homescreens and the "new" app launcher the nexus has, because i have been unable to find reference to them. there are APIs for live wallpapers, and while they may not have the same on the nexus has, they will be supported.

granted, it is confusing (perhaps misleading) because the nexus is also a "google experience" phone - beta features, hidden in the code, perhaps? stability issues, problems with it being non-standardized across platforms? who knows. but please, stop the knee-jerking.

I think it is you who is misinformed, however time will tell. If it comes out crippled I win, if not you win, simple enough.

Makes no difference.. i got OTA blocked as soon as they showed the crippled update we are supposed to get. Until proven wrong i will stick with my blue smoke glass which already has everything 2.1 can offer from the N1 plus more like overclock..

If you have rooted your phone, you will NOT get the OTA update. That is the major reason why I have not rooted mine. So you really do not have to worry about it.

At everyone that is whining about having to wait for the update: it has been like four days since the announcement was made on Facebook! The Nexus One have been released for only a month. You people have not been waiting years for these updated. It takes time to test these devices with new software. I have to ask would you rather wait a month and get an update that works with your handset or get an update right away that is full of bugs? Never mind, I already know the answer...all you internet trolls would be bitching either way.

true...but we have been aware of an update...remember all the way back to when it was just 2.0 They claimed that we'd get the 2.0.1 update and that in January a lot more of the issues would be solved and then came no further update... I will be happy when it comes out and I am hoping for a 3d drawer...but that's it.

Wow! What a bunch of crybabies! The animated wallpaper is part of the new home screen. The new home screen is not getting released because it does a horrible job of showing proper icons when you turn the phone sideways.

I got the apk for the home screen on my Droid. Though it's cool, don't tilt your phone while the drawer is open.

According to the leaked list that's been posted everywhere, we're pretty much getting everything except the new home screen.

Yeah, the Nexus One is out, and it's faster. Did you all think all phone development would stop as soon as you bought your Droid, and no new models would come out until your contract was up?

The biggest deal for me is the new Gallery app.

My phone actually had like a weird GUI restart like 5 minutes ago. It was weird. I checked for updates and I got nothing out of it.

Quite bizarre.

All I know is that the update needs to happen before February 22nd or the Moto Droid will be the 3rd phone running Android 2.1. Sprint seems to be trying to make that happen.

It still baffles the hell out of me how some of you can bitch and moan so goddamn much over a free f*cking update. Its definitely saddening to know most of my fellow Droid users are such whiny a**holes.

CavemanOOGA, why don't you stop "whining" about what other people choose to talk about? Quit being a whiny little bitch yourself.

All for the update, but am really happy with current OS. I am still over the fact that I have to use a bloated case so my battery cover doesn't fall off my second phone. Still love the phone. Cie la vie(so?)

You can get a new battery cover free from Verizon. Just a FYI. :-) Verizon isn't as "evil" as some make them out to be. Even though their colors are Red & Black.

Have you been to Verizon and got one? Is it tighter? When I went in with the problem the first time they sent me a new phone. I saw the posts about a month ago and wondered if the new cover stayed tight longer?

I used to care. but thanks to SMUpdate app (5$ in the market) I am able to overclock my phone and run 2.1 , its clear to me that the mod community will be leaps and bounds beyond what Verizon will roll out. Sholes.info for the win!

YOU ALL ARE FUCKING RETARDED, WHEN 2.1 DOES RELEASE YOU ALL WILL BE SO DISAPOINTED THAT YOU EITHER GOING TO DO YOUR SELF IN OR THE DORK NEXT TO YOU. 2.1 DOES NOT FIX MAJOR ISSUES!!!!!! SO THW AIT FOR IT IS WORTHLESS GET A REAL PHONE LIKE THE IPHONE, AT LEAST THERE THEY TOOK CARE OF THE ISSUES THEY HAD AFTER IT'S ORGINAL LAUNCH. GOOGLE DOES NOT GIVE ONE DAMN ABOUT YOU JUST THE MONEY THEY CAN MAKE, LOOK AT ALL THE ISSUES WITH THE ANDROID OS AND THE NEXUS ONE. SOME OF THE ISSUES WITH ANDROID HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR OVER 1 YEAR AND STILL NO FIX, THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A NON MANUFACTURING/SOFTWARE/CELL PHONE COMPANY TRIES TO JUMP IN THE WATER WITH THE SHARKS, YOU GET BITTEN NOT THEM, ROFLMAO!

You are an idiot. You do realize that Apple is not a hardware company. As much as they act like it they do not design or build a single piece of hardware they sell, they work with OEMs who do all of the work and then they just slap an Apple logo on it and put their shitty software on it then charge you $200-$2000 more than it is worth, based on which product we are talking about. Again, Apple is not now nor have they every been a hardware designer or a hardware manufacturer.

A real phone like the iPhone? Most overrated device ever. On the worst network ever. iPhone is nothing more then an iPod touch that is twice as thick, and makes calls. I would much rather buy the touch and get a regular verizon dumb phone then get an iPhone. You pay for service you dont get and 3g coverage you wont get with AT&T and the iPhone just is not THAT great. Only people who love iPhones are either A) Apple Fanbois or B) Not the least bit tech savvy. The iPhone caught on due to its simplicity. The common idiot can use it easily. That is it. To even make the iPhone a true smartphone you have to "jailbrake" it. They act like they are so cool if they have, then their phone can do regular things the droid can do. Not to mention you have to deal with Apple deciding which apps you get to use. Google does not care about anything but your money? Hmmm google's android operating system is open source, allows people to help make it, they provide INSANE apps for FREE! (Google maps [with navigation for FREEEEE], google goggles, google voice, and many more). Apple on the other hand provides typically sub par products (Mac's are not nearly as good as PC's no matter what any fanbois say), charges a premium for their brand image and pockets the difference. Google makes the VAST majority of their money off search revenues... Apple on ripping people off for their garbage. I purchased a iPod years ago (back when they were balck and white screens) and it was a solid device. But now i have to buy a special kit to open it up and replace the battery. Also you have to get programs to get your music off the iPod. Apple is more of a money grubbing organization then Google. Both only truely care about your money, but Google provides much more to its consumers then Apple.

Oh wait, Apple is gonna change the game with this whole iPad product. (Not only is that the WORST name for a product, the whole i(name your product here) thing is totally dead (not all of that is to be blamed on Apple, other companies jumped on it and killed it.) Apple really thinks every household is going to purchase SEVERAL of these devices. And once again they shot themselves in the foot by teaming up with AT&T to offer 3G service. If AT&T cant handle iPhone traffic what is it going to do with iPad. Not to mention apple & verizon stock is overvalued due to analyst expectations of large sales as soon as AT&T's exclusive contract is up. Apple seems to not care about providing its customers with a great service and a great product. They get money from the consumer and a TON from AT&T for exclusive rights. Apple is about as far from a customer friendly company as it gets. Apple IS the new Microsoft all the fanbois loved to demonize back in the day.

At least something more official to go with... talk to a buddy that works for Verizon and they did get this today so its not fake. He says they were given no other info
