Speck Booth

Speck, one of the biggest names in cases, has been purchased by Samsonite, one of the biggest names in luggage, for $85 million. Speck has been around since 2001 and makes cases for all kinds of electronic devices including phones, tablets, MacBooks and e-readers. They have various well-known lines of cases that include the CandyShell, FabShell and PixelSkin for phones as well as the SeeThru and SmartShell for MacBook.

Tom Korbas, Americas president for Samsonite, had this to say:

"The acquisition offers Samsonite the opportunity to participate in the large and growing smartphone-case market, which in the U.S. alone is estimated to be worth $2.3 billion, as well as in the tablet-case market, where Speck is also a leader,"

According to NPD, Speck is among the four largest smartphone accessory makers with the likes of Belkin, Otter and Incipio. While Samsonite does not currently make any smartphone cases, their products can typically be found alongside Speck products at airport stores and kiosks.

Samsonite buys case maker Speck for $85 million

Never had one, never really seen reviews of them in the forums, but do know the name.

Are their cell cases worth writing home about as compared to the others mentioned?

They are overpriced compared to other cases you can get for cheaper on Amazon/EBay, but I had a speck case on my S3 and now my s4 and they are very durable and stylish.

They cost a bit, but they're pretty well made, they're pretty attractive, and they feel very nice in the hand. I've used one, but I don't recall actually dropping that phone while it had the case on, so I can't speak to its protection. This was probably more of a brand name purchase than a product line purchase.

My friend had one for Moto X. It was a snap on plastic with carbon fiber back. After few months carbon significantly wore out as if sender went over it and when he dropped the phone, the volume key was dented and jammed. Came out that the specific area around the buttons is not recessed enough. For a 30$ case I expected more.

I had a speck case on my macbook pro, the little clips that hold it in place broke very quickly (without even trying to remove it). I've seen a lot of people complaining about the same issue. Hopefully this acquisition by samsonite will lead to better cases for both computers and phones.

I had the same thing happen to me too. I need a new case for macbook as well.

has anyone ever thought that Samsonite was owned by Samsung?

I thought that until a few years ago... yes, I know... very silly.

Purchase makes sense to me... as phones/tablets keep getting larger, it's only a matter of time until cases compete with luggage. :)

I love Speck cases. Got their cases on my M8, my Macbook Air, and my iPad Air. I had a case from them on my M7 back when I still had it, too.

However, I have little clue about what Samsonite luggage is like. I hadn't really heard of them until I read this article, to be honest.
