Dragon Quest for Android

Classic Square Enix role-playing game Dragon Quest VIII has launched on Android today. The game has been fully revamped with 3D graphics and a few other touch-friendly elements while retaining the setting's charm. The story follows a brave unnamed hero as he tries to break a malicious curse placed on his king and princess. There's alchemical crafting, monster gladiatorial battles, and gambling to enjoy throughout the game between working your way through the fantasy storyline.

Dragon Quest VIII originally launched in 2004 on PlayStation 2, but these games go back way farther than that. In the original Nintendo days, the series was called Dragon Warrior, and followed all of the same party building and turn-based combat mechanics that are still really popular. As you might expect from Square Enix, there's a premium pricetag included here; be prepared to drop about $20 for Dragon Quest VIII on Android.

How many of you guys played the original Dragon Quest or Dragon Warrior games? Are you willing to pay $20 for nostalgic mobile gaming?

Revamped Dragon Quest VIII RPG lands on Android

Square puts these games on sale for 50% off a lot. I will wait until then. I haven't played it but it looks like it would be good on my Shield if it supports landscape. If I have to play this in portrait I will skip it. I wish they would add proper gamepad support like they do on iOS games but the button mapping of the shield is an OK alternative.

By the way it is $19.99 here in the United States of America.

Ah Jessica... Great RPG character.

This was JRPG at its finest. Before FF took it all to pieces.

Dragon Quest 8 was already in 3d and it was by far one of the best RPGs on the Playstation 2. Why is it portrait only?

Square produces premium products. This isn't Candy Crush or Cut the Rope. This is a legit console title that comes with everything you'd expect.

Thanks for your comment SquareEnix marketing droid. Please show yourself out.

20 bucks for a mobile game is too much. Besides last I heard consoles don't have portrait mode games.

The whole landscape thing is stupid. Playing it on a tablet would probably be pretty cool though. It's a console title but it's a console title from 10 years ago so you can't really say that lol. I might just play it on my Ps3 haha.

These ports tend to get pretty mediocre reviews because of the controls and other bugs. Look at their ports of the DS remakes. To that point, I'd easily pay $40 for this on 3DS. But a shoddy version on Android or iOS isn't worth $5.

Wow really? $20 for an old game? And i thought $16 was alot for a rpg game. I'm just gonna stick with my console version instead.
