Nexus 7

You might remember that we hooked with Google last week and set up some giveaways for Nexus 7 tablets and Google Play gift cards. That's the kind of awesome stuff we do around these parts, and spreading the Android love around is something we enjoy. Anyhow, back to those giveaways.

We went through the forums threads and picked out our winners, and here they be.

Congrats all around! Keep an eye on your inboxes, as I'm going to need to know where to send the Nexus 7s. Thanks everyone for entering, and keep an eye out for more big contests.

Haha

They picked people that posted on pages about halfway through the topic. If there were 70 pages, the winner would have posted around page 35. Next time they do a contest I'm going to wait until there's like 35-70 pages, depending on the requirements of the contest. Lol

Disappointed. December 19th winner not a true limerick, either in rhyme or in anapestic verse. Won't bother entering contests a second time.

Well Jerry, were you the awarding judge? I've always considered the rules something to be respected, and the responsibility of the judges to be a serious one when it comes to fairness. As I recall, it was made clear that we were to read the rules of the contest carefully. I did so. I don't appreciate my valid expression of disappointment being characterized as a deficiency of character.

Expressng your disappointment isn't the problem; saying something that can be construed as negative about someone else because they won and you lost is the reason for his comment. You lost, I lost, get over it already.

No criticism of the winner intended. My remarks were directed at the judge(s). Now let's both be over it. Merry Christmas.

I have to side with you on this one; it didn't write fit the form of a limerick. His limerick rewritten to fit the form:

Oh my! Look at what Google's done!
It all started with the G1.
Their cool phone OS
Has features the best,
So use it! 'Tis lots of good fun.

Yeah, sorry, I'm with JobiWan and wsmather on this one -- after all of the haranging about "following the rules," I went out and officially brushed up on my limerick skills (http://homeworktips.about.com/od/englishhomework/a/limerick.htm) prior to submitting my entry. I just finished reading the winning limerick entry from 12/19 and said out loud, "Seriously??"

At the risk of putting my character in a bad light and being branded a sore loser (which I won't lose sleep over, since I took the rules to heart and tried hard to follow limerick form/rhythm), there were dozens of other wittier, funnier, LEGIT limerick entries in this particular contest, that were not only better than my own lame attempt, but FAR worthier to win that Nexus 7 than the winning entry in this case.

If AC staff were picking a RANDOM limerick from the thousands submitted, that's fine -- if you were trying to pick the "best," well, I guess at least three of us who tried to follow limerick rules disagree. (Of course, how and when the winner WOULD be selected was never made clear in advance.)

So much for the first -- and last -- contest I've entered at Android Central. Oh, and happy holidays to all.

Hey JobiWan and vastateofmind - thanks for your input. I feel better knowing that others saw the same trouble with the judging that I did. But on further reflection, we should have known they weren't really reviewing the entries. Although the word "contest" is used generically for these sort of events, in this case it was termed the Nexus 7 Giveaway, which as it turns out, was exactly what it was. There were various methods of entry on various days, all of which were token - a photo, saying something positive, etc. etc. The winners are obviously selected either at random, or at the judge's whim. Which is fine!!
Their only error (which I'm pretty sure will not be repeated), was in asking us to create and submit a limerick. Some were quite good in form and subject. Most weren't even close to the form, and even the subject was questionable. Which did make me wonder... Now I realize my misunderstanding. Having never entered an event like this on Android Central before, I didn't realize what most everyone else does - it doesn't matter what you submit - it's a crapshoot no matter what.
And once again, that's just fine. It's pretty dang nice that these folks are willing to spend the time and effort to give us stuff like this free of charge.
So I get it now. Peace. Happy New Year. And now, I just can't resist...

A limerick contest condition:
Judges must know the definition
though techies astute
(one extremely hirsute!)
One must ask, was there much erudition?
----------------
(that ought to me blacklisted...or a consolation prize!)

Just got a 32GB Nexus 7 anyways :P I think the contests were just a hassle to enter, so after 2 days of confusing messages I just gave up.

Wow! That's the 15th giveaway I have lost this December alone! I have no luck! :(
Anyways congratulations to all 5 winners and Merry Christmas to all!

Congrats to the winners. Now they won't be eligible for the next contest. Less competition is good for the rest of us. Lol

Even through I'm not one in the list ( Hopefully next time ), but still Congratulation to all the lucky winners And Merry Christmas to everyone.

I hoped my limerick would win it :(

so in stepped Android.
Jelly Bean made it quicker,
Cupertino has never felt sicker.
Tim Cook is annoyed.
