Nexus 5

Here comes Google and LG's next big thing

Today brings an end to all the rumors, leaks and speculation — the LG-made Google Nexus 5 is finally official and the Google Play Store is now taking orders.

Here's the long and short of it: This year's Nexus handset is a 5-incher with a 1080p display, a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU and 2GB of RAM. Storage comes in 16 and 32GB configurations. The Nexus 5 is the first Nexus device to ship with an OIS (optical image stabilization) camera — an 8MP unit — which should compensate for hand motion in photos. It's also packing a 2300mAh battery and wireless charging capabilities.

Two Nexus 5 models will be offered, a North American version with CDMA support, 7-band WCDMA and 9-band LTE, and an international version with 6-band WCDMA and 6-band LTE. For a full list of radio bands and other technical info, check out our full Nexus 5 specs post.

Prices in the UK start at £295; in the U.S. it's $349 for 16GB and $399 for 32GB. It's available to order now on Google Play Store in several countries with 1-2 day shipping times; brick-and-mortar stores in the UK should have it tomorrow (Nov. 1).  The first thousand UK buyers who pick up a Nexus 5 from Carphone Warehouse on-contract can claim a free 16GB Nexus 7 (2012). Carphone's on-contract prices start at £32 per month on 3G and £37 on 4G, both from O2.

Naturally, the Nexus 5 runs the all-new Android 4.4 KitKat, which we're still in the process of learning about amid today's announcements. Stay tuned for additional info just as soon as we get it.

Press Release

New flagship Google handset £295 SIM free

LONDON, 31st October 2013: Carphone Warehouse has announced that it will be stocking Google’s new flagship handset, the Nexus 5, from tomorrow (Friday 1st Nov).

Free from £32 per month*, or £295 SIM free, the first device to run on Android 4.4 ‘Kit-Kat’ will be available in stores, online at or by calling 0870 870 0870.

The first 1,000 customers to order the Nexus 5 on a 4G contract** via the Carphone Warehouse website will also receive a free Google Nexus 7 Wi-Fi 16GB tablet (worth £139).

David Phelan, Mobile Technology Advisor at Carphone Warehouse says, “Google's own-brand phones are always a talking point. The Nexus 5 has been hotly anticipated and delivers style and power in a slick, slim shell with a screen that stretches from one edge of the front to the other. Google fans like Nexus because it shows Android at its purest and most advanced: the latest Kit-Kat software will be on this phone first. This phone is for early adopters, Google fans and ‘power users’ who want a high-end phone at a keen price.

“Now Android is such a powerful force in mobile, we can expect the Nexus 5 with its cutting-edge specs to beat even the success of the Nexus 4.”

* O2 3G contract £32 per month, includes unlimited calls and texts and 1GB of data
**O2 4G contract £37 per month, includes unlimited calls and texts and 2GB of data

The Nexus 5 is official, Play Store now taking orders

Wow went to go and buy a 16 gig model since I just saw this posting it's been an hour and the black and white is already sold out wow that was fast. Clearly they didn't have enough stick just like last time haha but either way glad it's selling out and that there's interest but still I want the phone so I can switch between it and an iPhone haha.

WTF. SO I have unlimited grandfathered LTE on Verizon and would not be able to use this phone. I went ahead and bought a big a### battery for my galaxy nexus, since that is the only issue that I have with this phone. No need to upgrade every year anyways(I bought it cash about 8 months ago).

Looks like. The main question is, will Sprint allow a phone not purchased through them to be added to their network.

Is there a separate version for ATT? I ordered one and then noticed it only said t-mobile and Sprint under supported networks.

It'll work on ATT. If you're still curious look up the wireless bands that ATT uses and compare them to the Nexus 5.

It may get it later, but for now I suspect that Verizon is still in Google's Penalty Box for their shenanigans with prior Nexus releases.

More like Verizon gives a rats @$$ about the N5 if they can't pre-load their crap software on it, lock the bootloader, and control updates.

Yep which is why once my N5 arrives I will be a former Verizon customer. People love to moan about Verizon's policy but refuse to jump ship. I'm out Big Red!

THIS. Verizon sucks and the only way to make your voice heard is LEAVE them.
I worked at Verizon and kept my AT&T plan while working there instead of using their half price plans.

Hmmm, I wonder how they will address the CDMA? Will it work like the iPhone in that you could buy it through Google and still activate it on Sprint or will the Sprint variant again be $200 on contract and $550-$600 full price?

certainly sounds like it will run on Verizon, just have to wait and see if it needs to be certified first.

If I have an update do u still pay full price if I go with playstore

Posted via Android Central App

Most likely if you want to use your update, you will have to hope that your carrier offers it through their store rather than the Google Play Store.

Yes, the Play Store does not work directly with any carriers. It only provides devices that support specific networks. You will have to pay full price for this device, or (if the carrier even does decide to sell it through their own channels) you will have to pay their jacked up price for the phone with you subsidy. If your contract is about to be up, I suggest just buying this phone and switching to T-mobile (if it's available in your area) so that you aren't paying that subsidy every month.

From past experiences your n4 will probably get kitkat in a couple days if not tomorrow

Posted via Android Central App

Does this it will be available just in the Play Store or also retail? Kinda like they did the Nexus 7

I would assume it won't work on verizon. If it technically does I would think they'd prevent it from activating.

I'm on hold with Google. I hope it works on Verizon so I don't have to cancel my order....Feeling totally bummed....

Yes it does...well, it supports Band 4, which Verizon just launched earlier this month. So probably limited coverage.

Just get the LG G2 on Verizon. Its very close in specs to the Nexus and even beats it in some other categories. I love it.

P.S. And don't listen to those grumblers who say that LG's skin is crap. The UI is quite useful. I'm betting that most of those grumblers never even used the G2.

Yeah, I want it on Sprint but Sprint has never let you bring your own phone except the iPhone. I would need confirmation before buying outside the carrier or authorized retailer on CDMA.

It does NOT work on Verizon. The CDMA band that Verizon uses was not put in this device. The LTE would work but you couldn't place calls nor would Verizon acknowledge the device on their network. Sorry. Get an LG G2 and root - it's a better choice.

So there's no Google "event" or live YouTube meeting showcasing kitkat features? Wtf

Posted via Android Central App on my white Nexus 4 with StraightTalk

Just bought ours!!!! Two phones coming our way and just ordered some cases on amazon. SO PUMPED!

No Verizon!! The Verge says: "It will work across a wide array of carriers — in the US, it will work on everything except Verizon."

For those who haven't been paying attention the last number of years:

The Nexus is still the "development" prototype model android phone, even if the last couple versions have sold well to the general consumer also. In being a development model, it needs to get updates without delay or interference from the carrier. And Verizon has iron-fist/totalitarian policies about updates, and slug-like speed.

So no, no nexus on verizon. At least you've got coverage in many places that you'll never visit (and outrageous prices everywhere, because there is little competition in those sparsely populated areas).

Actually, Verizon gives me coverage in MANY places I visit, where my husband's Sprint phone gets zero bars. BUT my contract is up, so who knows. I wish some carrier in Portland would step up and have as good a coverage here as Verizon.

I have always had outstanding coverage with sprint in Portland. On my Blackberry, EVO OG and EVO LTE.

Ordered my 16 GB model! With the 32 not having a bigger battery, I'll put that extra $50 towards a bumper!

What, no SD card? Fail! Major Flappin Fail! [Sarcasm folks.] The N7 is the first and only device I will ever buy without an SD card slot. Nice tab but too limited for me... Plus I HATE vanilla Android. Plus LG makes it! Hell to the No!

Just ordered 3 128 GB models in Navy Blue.

So even blatantly stating "Sarcasm folks" doesn't convey the message? Dude, seriously...

Posted from my pure Google Nexus 4 using the AC app.

Their coverage in my area is better than anyone else, and I still have 4 lines with unlimited data....its really hard to give that up.

Well, here's hoping that LG didn't screw up inventory because I have to order mine next Friday.

Where? All I see is the black 16GB version for £299.

EDIT: They've now got both black, and white, plus the 16GB and 32GB models. :)

1 GB White and 2 32 GB Black shipping to my buddy in DE for NO TAX!! MuHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! NERDING OUT BIG TIME (and hopefully not f*cking up trades at work)!!!!!!!

Expect an event within the next few hours... Also a release of Android 4.4 will roll out in the next 24 hours. My N7 2013 thanks you.

Verizon's LTE Bands are supported. Their bands are 13 & 4. Band 4 is supported, so its possible for the phone to come out for Verizon.

Sorry, it doesn't work that way. There is no Verizon CDMA support, so you couldn't use the vice part. Plus, you couldn't even activate it. That and band 4 is so limited right now, you most likely wouldn't even have LTE coverage.

I have a HTC One, but I ordered a white 32gb model. May be able to make a few bucks from it. Unless I love it too much to sell it lol

Anybody know about how long it will be before Google starts pushing kit Kat to other nexus devices? Nexus 7, nexus 4.....

Posted via Android Central App

I'm debating the same thing going to wait for battery reviews and camera opinions before I sell the G2 and get this, The G2 battery is amazing and the camera is probably the best on android but will wait and see. I can only imagine how much better the battery will be on the G2 with 4.4.

Posted via Android Central App

Yep, I see the same. Changed in a matter of minutes....

Edit: Actually, it moves from out of inventory to Leaves warehouse by November 8, 2013. Now same thing with the 32GB model.

Im in on it too. Been waiting for this to ditch both Big Red and my aging Rezound.
Black 32 GB too bad the covers and bumpers aren't available yet.

It may sound ridiculous but Im jumping to T-mobile. Currently I have 3 smartphones and a dumbphone on Verizon. Holding onto the unlimited data. Since I travel a LOT out of the country mostly China these days and T-mobile now offers unlimited data plus free international roaming (or if its too slow, just pop a local SIM card in)then the 2.5 GB tethering free of charge... Im all over it.. My bill is going to drop from 270.00 a month to about 170.00 a month. Thats 1200.00 a year I get to keep in my pocket. My work provided phone is on Verizon and will remain that way so dropped calls aren't really an issue. Verizon does have the best service area and the fastest data near where I call home but there is plenty that I will not miss.. Bloatware and slow updates being top of the list...
Back when I got my Rezound from Verizon, my wife and I were looking REALLY hard at the Galaxy Nexus. Looking back, we are both glad we went with the Rezound even though its still stuck on 4.0.3 (and its got plenty of power to run 4.3) Verizon nor HTC seem interested in updating it further. Yes I could root it like I did with my old Incredible but you should not have to do that in order to get updates.
I figure with the old Rezound, it will become a movie and music machine for travel.

Still don't see it replacing my moto x as a daily driver. But will be a fun device to switch it up with.

Intriguing. Love the price. I hope it will be a decent phone although made by LG. I really hate that Google is still so stingy on memory. Not surprised about the absence of a micro sd slot, but why can't they offer a 64gb capacity phone for $449 or even $499?? Pleasantly surprised about the improvements made to the camera, especially the image stabilization. Also not surprised that Verizon is out of the loop with this phone - they don't deserve to offer this phone anyway. I have a contract with Verizon until June 2014. By then, I'll be more than ready for a new provider as well as a new phone. I would love to consider the Nexus 5, but no micro sd slot and only 32gb of memory is a sticking point. Can't wait to see what the phone world looks like in 7 months!

Got my black 32 GB version! Got 2 day shipping and it should ship on the 8th which is fine for me since I will be out of town all next week! Sweet!

Sent from my Moto X!

Just ordered mine! I didnt even check, but it looks like At&t LTE bands will be supported out of the box according to the spec page. Anyone know anything different???

In typical Google fashion they are all sold out for the foreseeable future. It switched from shipping in the next 1-2 days to shipping Nov 8th to out of stock. So, officially they are apparently available tomorrow but not really for several weeks to all but the most devote of smartphone fans.

Has there been any confirmation of the free 100gb of google drive storage that was rumored in the hours leading up to the release. Have mine on order 32gb white shipping on or before Nov 5th.

Ordered 4 (was able to get one of each size/color) and keeping the 16gb black one. The rest are going on eBay....

Posted via Android Central App

With shipping, Paypal and eBay fees you're going to have to sell them for like $75 more than retail in order to make like $25 on one. Seems like a lot of hassle for what little profit you are likely to make on a phone that will be widely available.

Yup, listed at $125 over retail. If it doesn't sell, eBay doesn't charge you any fees and I can always return it to Google. But I'm betting the in stock/ordering capability will not last.

I show everything still in stock except the 16GB Black. As of 3:45pm MST
I ordered a 32GB White email said ships by 11/8.

I had two in my cart, black 32gb and white 32gb. Hummed and hawed. Looked at specs to see if battery size was same for all versions. Went back to my cart which was empty and when I tried to re-add the phones they were sold out.

I guess I should have shot first and asked questions later. Fortunately I am still using my great Nexus 4 so I can wait a bit to upgrade.

Wonder why the uk version is more expensive? Dollar price doesn't convert to £

Being ripped off?

US prices are always exclusive of sales tax (because they vary from state to state, e.g. NY is 8.875%) whereas UK prices always include VAT

And both my orders for the 32 and 16 white went through even though I never received an email on the 32 and the 16 came back and.....who knows?
I see the status of the orders is slightly different. The 32 has the status as ship by 11/8, but the 16 (that I did get and email for) still says pemding.
I can cancel one if both go "ship by" - or not......

So it looks like Android isn't getting a complete back up feature like iOS...the reddit rumor had me going

I was really hoping Google would bring that to Android because how else does someone back up their apps(without root, which is like 90% of users)? Its so easy on iOS, but for something as advanced as Android, it baffles me that we don't have it...So those of us getting the new N5, without root, I guess we just ditch whatever we accumulated and start over

please be shur to compare size with the blackberry z10 when android central gets it in hand. Thanks !!

I finally got my order to go through. I had to refresh the page like 15 times because I kept getting out of inventory. I got my confirmation # and a shipping date of the 8th. I'm so happy to be retiring my galaxy nexus. :-)

I ordered a 32GB White email said ships by 11/8.

Just got my Shipping Confirmation!! Paid the $4 extra for expedited shipping. 32gb Black. USA Colorado.

Pretty awesome that there was no email notifying anyone of a lunch. Just keep guessing at a time of availability! AWESOME. Now for a black 32gb N5 is a 2-3 week wait. Thanks, Google! *sarcasm* -_______-

EDIT: Email confirmation says leaves warehouse on 11/15. Well, at least I have a date from Google. Still pretty excited even though I missed the initial launch!!!

But I will say that at least it's nice to know they're finally available and for those of you lucky enough to snag one and get it in 1-2 days, enjoy you guys!

I am also sick of Verizon. What US carrier are you guys using? Has ATT improved over the past five years?

Posted via Android Central App

Depends where you are. Since LTE went live I haven't dropped a single call, or found a single dead spot.
Even in my house where I had 1-2 bars pre LTE, I now have 3-5 bars. (signal strength)

I wouldn't use Verizon unless they gave me free phones and free service. And I would still keep my AT&T plan even then.

If I have a contract with AT&T at the moment. If I bought the Google play edition, would I be able to put my sim card in it and it would work fine?

I want this phone but I am going to wait until people get theirs delivered to see how their experience with it is. Camera etc.

Unfortunately no Play Store access for us down here in New Zealand. Come Google get your act together it's a big world out there.

For those in UK and willing to buy N5 from carphone - don't even bother. Just came back from them. They said it's only available on contract and they probably won't be able to match google's price anyway (why would the website says it's 295 sim free then?). 32 white from google already ordered :)

Thank you for NOT calling it a "Hero phone", ala BGR. Those people have a problem. Just when I thought I couldn't respect them any less...
