LG G Pad 8.3

Larger-screened tablet for the same price as Google's Nexus 7

LG's G Pad 8.3 is one of the more impressive mid-sized Android tablets available today, with an 8.3-inch 1920x1200-resolution screen, a metal body and a Snapdragon 600 CPU. It's also got LG's colorful, love-it-or-loate-it Android UI, but that's easy enough to pare back if it's not your cup of tea. In any case we're starting to see the G Pad appearing at discounted prices in the UK, where it debuted around the £260 mark in October.

UK retailer Expansys is offering the 16GB G Pad for £199.99 — within 99 pence of Google's base Nexus 7 model, which comes with a smaller screen and slightly less powerful CPU. It's not a Nexus, meaning you won't get speedy updates or the pure Android software experience, but still, the G Pad 8.3 is a fine tablet for this price.

Got one for my tech illiterate parents and they like it. It's a very nice tablet, but after using my Moto X, the UI is way too over the top. Wish I had waited a bit and got them the Google Edition since they really only use it for email and web surfing. Then again, newegg had a killer deal at $270.

IMO, it looks much better proportioned than the N7, I hate the Nexus huge top and bottom bezels.

and therein lies the problem - software.

I just wouldn't trust LG to update this, where it is already out of date.

A nexus device will be up to date longer and more than likely be much more optimised for the hardware inside.

shame

Did you notice tha LG had a google edition and more than likely will get update like the nexus?

I have one of this LG 8.3 and to me is much better than the nexus.

No.. It's not better the Nexus-7.. It's SUPERIOR to the Nexus-7..
I own both.. and there is NO CONTEST. What the N7 gets is fantastic developer support in the community.. at least until it's demise since it's EOL shadow is starting to fall.. As is all nexus products over the next 2 yrs.

For anyone that likes a product but not the UI, don't buy it until you find out if what you want in software can be hacked on.

Great price but I know lack of update means it better to have tea nexus 7 unless your happy with not having the latest firmware and living in lg's ui

Do any tablets come in a GPe form or is that reserved to select phones? I'd have considered this for its size if it was a GPe product. I don't much care for the logo which would be sideways most of the time but that's not too big of a deal. At least it uses onscreen navigation buttons.

Really shows how much profit Apple is making on their iPads...

a very good deal. I'd have bought two at that price, one for my daughter, one for me.

this £200 deal is basically about US$300, not such steal :-(

I am typing this post on my LG G Pad 8.3, and it is one fantastic tablet, no issues here, I am also using Nova Launcher. In regards to software updates and LG, yes they are slow, but at least it is running JB 4.2, hopefully 4.4 is not too far off. Also got it for $250 from new egg.

This is better on 4.2.2 than an N7 on 4.4.2 frankly, (just like the G2 and the N5 in fact), so I don't care about the base OS updates.

Looking for a replacement (and reservetablet) while my Nexus 7-13 is in repair (or better replaced for brand new one) before warranty ends because of screen bleed, this tablet seems very nice if also shipped to and cheaper than in Benelux from UK. Always a lottery concerning orders in UK. But only if GPe can be flashed to replace LG firmware. Time to check Xda for that.

By the way 1st time using Android Central app. Not even a dark theme? Are you kidding me? Apps without should be banned out of Play Store. But then almost all Google's own apps would banned to.

Update...Oops, found it. My appologies.

There is a dark theme, that's what I am using. Click on the Android Central logo on the top left hand corner, then scroll down to settings, and Chek the box for night mode setting.

Does it have a sd card slot? I really don't care about updates. If it works as is and runs like a dream. Having had a lot of nexus devices before I have found the updates to be troublesome. Remember when 4.2 dropped onto the nexus 7? It was a Google flame out after that. Lots of....It running slow....i have battery issues now.....apps crash.....how can I roll back..... remember guys. Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. So this table to me seems like a bargain. UI not with standing. You can put Nova and the likes on it. :-)

Newegg carries it. They've had killer deals on them.

I'm very happy with mine, I replaced my Xoom with the G Pad and it runs great. I like the size of it much more than the 10" and 7" form factors.

If I buy the GPE, are there 3rd party apps available to mimic/restore the functionality the original version offers? I like some of the features the original has, but to get updates quicker with the GPE would be great.

What folks forget is all those "1st to the plate" Nexus updates only make you folks "Beta-Testers"... You go through the frustration, we get the final product months later with the kinks ironed out.. I keep my N7 on Custom ROM's... always.
Never tout Nexus updates as a reason it's superior to other devices.. Just like the N5 does not hold a candle to the G2, The N7 does not hold a candle to the 8.3..

As a tab to hold 8.3 sounds good and I want an SD card for media. Good size for E-reader apps and web. Not sure about LG firmware and Q Apps, just like the size and this price makes it a little more attractive. Prices from this retailer seem quite good at the moment.

Awesome A C

I have the gpe. Yes, the screen is beautiful for reading and I web surf in full desktop mode.

The only non-gpe app I would like is the IR blaster, but there are other apps to control my networked TV and receiver.

About to buy the LG G-PAD, Amazon uk also selling for same cheap price. Before I buy can any uk owners confirm if Sky Go and I-player download work on full screen? Thanks
