Nimbuzz brings HD calling to Android with its latest update

The latest update to Nimbuzz has finally hit the Android Market and aside from the usual "bug fixes" included with the release, Nimbuzz has added some great new features that have been long requested.

  • HD voice call quality on Nimbuzz to Nimbuzz calls! Nimbuzz is the first one to bring HD voice technology to all Android users. And it’s Free!
  • Install Nimbuzz on SD card to save space on the phone memory. We listen to our users and this has been one of their most requested features.
  • Updated My Profile page. All your information in one place.
  • Free avatars: Personalize and customize your Nimbuzz experience! Find new free and cool avatars on our N-World tab!

Out of that list the HD calling is the hugest portion of the update. According to Nimbuzz, now when you use the application for your calls you should get the most optimal call quality available to you. This is achieved by auto adapting your calls based on your coverage available as well as using a peer to peer connection which routes the calls device to device rather then actually going through Nimbuzz servers to connect. We've not tested it out as of yet so please, feel free to leave some comments letting us know how it works out. And no, you can't have Sally's number so don't ask. Download is after the break folks.

Gmail app updated with better reply, priority inbox features

Gmail update

Google has updated the Gmail application to version 2.3.2, and with it comes some often requested features.  Android phones running Froyo or higher can and should grab the update, the new features look awesome:

  • Better support for priority inbox
  • Send from any address you have set up in your account
  • Switch between reply, forward, and reply all while composing
  • And of course, the magical "Bug fixes"

Hit the source to see the full set of changes.  It looks like Google is keeping their promise of updating some of their core applications independently of the operating system, as we saw Google voice, YouTube, and Voice Search get nice updates yesterday as well.  Update in the Market, or hit the download link after the break for a shortcut. LG says Optimus One line will get Gingerbread, now quit asking

LG Optimus One

This is why carriers and manufacturers don't often say if and when an update is coming. LG first said on Facebook that an update to Gingerbread couldn't happen for its Optimus One line of Android smartphones (that includes the Optimus S, T, LG Vortex and any other alphabetical variants in the U.S.). Later, on its website, it said that was wrong, and it'd have to consider an update. And now, again on its website again it's saying the Optimus One line indeed will be updated.

LG will upgrade all Optimus One smartphones currently using the Froyo OS to the next version of the Android OS, Gingerbread. Details of the upgrade schedule will be announced locally in due course. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and misunderstanding that was caused regarding this issue.

Some phones will get official updates. Some won't. There will be much gnashing of teeth. But given that Gingerbread is officially all of four days old -- and only the SDK has been released, not source code for the manufacturers -- a little patience wouldn't kill anybody, would it?

Yes, some HTC phones will be updated. Yes, some Samsung phones (probably) will be updated. Yes some Motorola phones will be updated. And we'll have new phones that are released between now and then. It's the circle of life, people. [LG] Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

PlayStation Phone runs Neocore -- poorly -- on video

 PlayStation Phone benchmarks

The guys over at Engadget just got their hands on a video showing off the Sony PlayStation Phone (aka the Zeus, Z1) running benchmark program Neocore. As you can see above, it didn't fare so well, but keep in mind that this is prototype hardware and software. Sony seems to want gaming to be a main focus of the phone, so we fully expect the GPU to blow away benchmarks once the phone is finally released. Suffice to say, yes, it will run Angry Birds. Click past the break to see the video in action. [Engadget]

What happened to the HTC Merge?

HTC Merge

Let's face it, folks: The prospects of the HTC Merge seeing the light of day before 2011 are next to nil. It just ain't gonna happen. And that's a darn shame, because a lot of you -- and us -- were looking forward to Verizon getting its own version of the G2.

We got a good look at it way back at the beginning of October (see our hands-on and video preview), but aside from the odd advertising appearance, Best Buy mention and random accessory spotting, we've seen little indication that it's been scheduled for release.

So what happened to the Merge? Current scuttlebutt is that it was caught in a strange time for release. The Droid 2 (and Droid 2 Global) is still pretty new. LTE was about to be announced. Did we really need another non-4G slider keyboard? Toss in the firestorm over the G2 locking out hackers, plus Bing being on the Merge, and the strikes were mounting.

Will it return in 2011 with an LTE radio? Will Bing still be on board? Tough to say at this point, with the prospect of dual-core processors and new versions of Android on the horizon. Tis a shame, really. The Merge may have died before its time.

Get the Gingerbread launcher now

Gingerbread launcher

If you're just dying to try the Gingerbread launcher, MoDaCo's pulled it from the Android 2.3 SDK and packaged into a handy app. How's it different from the stock Android 2.2 launcher? It has colors. But, hey, it's cool to try, we guess. Download links are after the break.

AT&T and other locked Dell Streaks set to receive Froyo mid-January

Dell Streak Froyo

An internal e-mail confirms that the locked versions of the Dell Streak, such as the one on AT&T, will have to wait until the week of January 12th for the Froyo update. The OTA was thought to be coming earlier, but has been pushed back for an unknown reason.

In other Streak news, the ship date for Streaks preloaded with Froyo has been pushed back to Dec. 26, causing anger among customers hoping to get their hands on the device earlier.

Not the best news for Dell or Streak owners; let's hope the long awaited Froyo isn't delayed much more. [Streak Smart]
