Acer S2

New Snapdragon 800 phone with 6-inch 1080p display

In yet another pre-IFA, pre-announcement announcement, Acer has taken the wraps off its latest smartphone, the Liquid S2, ahead of a full unveiling at this week's show in Berlin.

The manufacturer claims it's the first smartphone with 4K video recording, a feature enabled by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 800 processor, though both Sony and Samsung are expected to announce 4K-recording phones later this week. Besides Qualcomm's latest processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, the Liquid S2 packs a gigantic 6-inch 1080p IPS LCD display and a hefty 3300mAh battery.

On the software side, you get what looks like a lightly-skinned version of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. And for selfies and the like, you've also got a 2-megapixel front-facing camera with 1080p video recording chops.

Acer will be hoping to take on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which is due to be unveiled at an event this Wednesday in Berlin. As for release dates, the Liquid S2 will reportedly arrive in the UK around the end of October.

Stay tuned as the week progresses, as we'll be live from IFA to bring you full coverage of all the Android devices at the show.

I starting to become afraid of how large these phones are becoming.

I wouldn't be surprised if the standard screen size for 2014 was 6". But with smaller bezels, thinner designs and flexible displays they're able to do that now.

My pockets aren't big enough. If a phone requires me to carry a purse, it's too big.

That is one hell of a nice looking phone.

Yeah, it does have that premium look to it. Hopefully, it's priced right.

Yeah me too, and being Acer it shouldn't be too expensive, at least I hope not.

Not going to be doing much 4K recording with that 16gb internal.

MasterElwood says:

Class 10 SD card? But you are right : 16GB needs to die for super hi-end hero devices!

At four times the resolution of full hd, it's going to fill up memory quickly. What I really want is higher native iso and higher dynamic range.

There's no mention of an SD card slot...

4K recording on a 16GB storage phone. What's that? A five minute video and it's full?

Last year 5" was the new 4"... Now its looking like 6" is the new 5"... Now they will update Tablet size to 8" and move Phablet size to 7" territory...

I wonder when this madness will stop...

Its got awesome specs and its not a bad looking device either but what could you expect as far as developer support for this thing and would it ever see an android update in its life...also the 16gb I agree its 32gb minimum time.

You're probably right. We're not Acer's target market.

I'm liking what I'm seeing. Looks good..

v¡a ACapp njo¡!

Acer, you need to make a "statement" product in order to attract attention. And 16G is not the way to do it. If I was Acer I would make it 64G, removable battery, SD 128 capable (which this phone has), a name but affordable camera lens like maybe Fujinon, work with the xda people, USB OTG made to work with premium DACs, and other things. None of those things would add much to the price except perhaps 64G.
I don't know why some want to trash this phone. I say the more companies trying to make good phones the better.

If this had a 5" display instead, this phone would be perfect.

No, it's perfect with a 6"display lol

That's way too big. For me anyways. 5" is still manageable for one handed use.

No, you're right. I was just joking lol

It's going to be a few years until 4K displays are going to be even close to affordable. I don't really care about 4K video recording right now.

This. Most people can't even discern the difference between 720p and 1080p. They really won't be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 4k.

Whats the point of 4k recording when no one owns any 4k displays? kinda pointless.

Theses manufacturers need to stop placing their custom UI over Android OS.
