Pokémon Go and two Marines aid police in catching an attempted murder suspect

Two Marines, Javier Soch and Seth Ortega, have aided police in apprehending a suspected murder suspect thanks to playing Pokémon Go. But just how has a mobile game aided in this arrest, you ask? According to Marines, Soch's instance of Pokémon Go froze up and they both happened to noticed a man carrying what appeared to be a red plastic rose towards a woman and three children.

The party quickly made an escape from the suspect and contacted the authorities while Soch and Ortega kept vision on the man. They confirmed he also approached another woman and two children who were also playing Pokémon Go. Ortega explained the situation to ABC7:

"We see the gentleman go approach them again, at this point, me and my roommate start walking across the street and the gentleman actually walks up and touches one of the children, one of the boys, his toe, and starts walking his way up to the knee. At this point I'm running across the street and a gentleman who was walking down the street does the same thing."

The suspect was arrested on the spot for child annoyance, but it was later revealed he also had an outstanding warrant for attempted murder in Sonoma, California. Haven't heard about the Pokémon Go craze yet? We've got a number of resources that will quickly bring you up to speed.

  • Well you can always fund them. This way you can decide which stories get printed.
  • We do fund them by our patronage on the site.
  • They owe you nothing, how entitled can you get?
  • Nobody said anybody owed anybody. You are delusional.
  • The worst argument ever. By that measure they should turn in to a porn site.
  • lol why are you still here? I thought you were going to stomp off to another site.
  • I never said I would. I just turned on ad-block.
  • Pokemon Central is already in the works...
  • To say pokeman go aided in this is quite the stretch, don't you think? The game froze and they had to pay attention to the real world. From my Platinum Gold Note 5
  • Aided is a bit strong. But if he wasn't playing, he likely wouldn't have been in the area. Kind of a "butterfly flapping it's wings"argument tho Posted via the Android Central App
  • As in all things given time this will change. I don't have a problem with them talking up a popular game if it is informative and provides revenue for the site. You don't like it? Fine, it will die down soon. If you are soo butt hurt about this, that's a way bigger problem for you. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Why are you "butt hurt" about it?
  • I'm not, but some on here are. For what reason I couldn't tell you. Posted via the Android Central App
  • You obviously are. You are whining in your comment.
  • Please give me what you are smoking. You really don't understand what I was saying. Posted via the Android Central App
  • You "butt hurt" about people complaining.

  • This may be the worst written article (and worst subject) that I've ever read on this site.
  • It seems to be have been written by the same person who writes all the instructions for my electronics. Maybe English isn't their first language.
  • Go Pokémon Go! I'm all for things that get people more active. Seeing all these kids (even adults) out when they otherwise would be sitting around getting fat is a plus. All our fat asses need this. Posted via the Android Central App
  • As a parent, this article pisses me off. Pokemon Go didn't aid anything, and to spin it that way for your precious clicks and SEO links is ludicrous. Pokemon Go caused the kids to be away from their mom. Pokemon Go caused them to not notice the strange man close enough to touch them. Pokemon Go put everybody's radars on hold while this guy looked for a child to feel up in the streets. Pokemon Go created this whole scenario allowing this creep to attempt to prey on people. If it wasn't for Pokemon Go *freezing*, the Marine never would've noticed. Fortunately it sounds like another bystander also noticed - though I don't see his name anywhere. Whether or not he was playing Pogo, who knows. Every other article I've found on this says the two Marines caught this guy and they just happened to be playing PoGo. Only AC has spun it to say that PoGo somehow aided in this situation. Well done. And save your "butt hurt" comments, yes I'm overly angry about this because this is a serious situation.
  • I interpret this as, because they were playing Pokemon GO, they were led to the incident. If they were not playing the game, I don't think they would have been at that exact place at that time.
  • That's definitely true. But that logic can go both ways in this story.
  • I'm sure violent crimes have been disrupted many times by people looking to score drugs. That doesn't mean drug addiction saves lives.
  • And the worst thing is, nobody will listen to you. At the contrary , a bunch of imbeciles like codiusprime are just going to defend the articles thinking it's going to make them look mature. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Wait, I read the story twice...what did Pocket Monsters have to do with catching the person? Posted via the Android Central App
  • The article ommits that they were throwing pokeballs at the guy. Bust seriously, this article is horrible, Pokemon Go has nothing to do with this incident at all. If it does, oxygen would as well. Because if the marines hadn't been breathing air, they would not have been alive and caught the guy.
  • Thanks for all the info. I've been interested and you guys have given so much on this subject. I've finally after a long time gone for a morning run as an excuse to catch Pokémon. This is good for me. OnePlus 3
