New report states the Galaxy Note 7 will only come with a curved display

There's a new report that states Samsung isn't going to bother releasing a flat-screened version of the Galaxy Note 7. According to the Korea Herald, the company only plans to roll out a curved display, usually found on Edge variants.

From the report:

"Samsung Electronics' new Note phablet, tentatively called "Galaxy Note 7," is expected to have a curved screen, indicating the Korean tech giant's commitment to a dual-edge curved display for its Galaxy smartphones. According to local daily Munwha Ilbo, Samsung is not considering launching a flat screen version of the Note phone."

The report does get one thing incorrect, however. The Galaxy Note 7, if released with a curved display, will not be the first Note to sport such a feature. There's the Galaxy Note Edge (pictured above) that showcased what Samsung had in mind for future hardware.

Would you like to see the next Note have a curved display or are you not a fan of said screens? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

  • And here I was hoping for a flat variant... the curved edges may make it quite a slippery fish. Rumors have pointed both ways on this, though, so we won't really know anything for sure until Samsung announces the phone(s). Posted via the AC App on my Note 5
  • This is incorrect. Samsung leaked two different model numbers for the note 7. One normal and one curved. There will be 2 Posted via the Android Central App
  • They may have several variations for testing, but might only release one if them. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Just put a tech 21 case on it and call it a day. Problem solved
  • Much prefer a flat display. The curved edges on my S7Edge have all kinds of screen sensitivity issues.
  • +1 7 Edge, and I'm come from a Note 3. I miss the flat screen. On the curved screens, there is a section of it that is not usable. Taps or clicks are not registered there very good at all. Granted the curved screens appear sexy... Just not very functional. So form over function....? I want my phone to work well, and not just a pretty thing to look at... • The edge is very functional.....before you spew garbage, educate yourself Posted via the Android Central App
  • Calm down. I assume he's "educated" since he owns the S7 edge. Your experience may be better, but even when I've picked up my coworkers' or family members' S7 Edge's they've all seemed to have somewhat of a dead zone along that one spot of the curve. It's okay. I fully plan on getting the next Note with a curved screen. We can still be real about it.
  • The Edge is a gimmick. The only thing the curved edge offers that can't be implemented on a flat display is the glowing edge notification - which is a gimmick. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Absolutely agreed, the note 7 will be a non starter for me if the only variant is the edge screen model. I just don't like it
there's nothing about the features they added to the edge variant that can't be implemented on a flat screen. No big loss for me either way this year, I'm leaning towards keeping my Note 5 for two years and not upgrading this year.
But if they continue this edge only display for the Note line into next year I'll be very disappointed.
The Note 5 was my first Note and I really love it, I'll be forced to abandon the note line if they go to only edge variants.
  • Actually the edge is horrible if you watch video on your phone at all ...I have a note 5
But wanted to try the edge ...went to the tmobile store and tried the s7 edge
The phone is beautiful...fast ..the camera is great ...but the screen is unusable... there's a terrible glare on the top edge when you try to watch a video
What is the point of having a 2k screen if you can't watch video on it??? Posted via the Android Central App
  • The only one that needs to educate him/her self is you. The guy you said was "spilling garbage" has an s7 edge, he is certainly "educated" since he has experience using the phone. Don't get so aggressive just because someone has a different opinion (and he is not the only one to have this opinion over the edge being form o over function,) than yours over a phone. • I own the Note 3 also and on paper this new version was my next phone until I learned it had the tampon edge. It is highly function, very slick, but simply not what I want or can use. It makes the screen seem smaller than my older phone. I have trouble avoiding activation of side menus and such, it won't be as easy to put into a tripod mount to leverage the camera-which assuming it is as good or better than the 3 will be a hugely useful thing to my work. I'd like a flat screen variant. If they add one, cool beans, I'm in. If they don't, my 3 works fine, I can wait another year.
  • I keep reading of people saying this by I have absolutely ZERO ISSUES with my S7edge. I DO notice that sometimes getting the edge screen to come up requires some finesse, but I don't ever have any problems with touches not picked up because of the curves. I'd be curious to see a poll of S7 edge users to see how many actually have problems with this. ...Joe K.
  • I'm experiencing the same thing with the touch sensitivity. I also have big hands and cannot operate this phone with one hand without hitting keys i don't want to and activating the edge features on accident which drives me nuts. I must admit though the phone looks amazing, but thats about it. The edge is just for looks and the features it offers are just gimmicks. And to top it all off you cannot use a screen protector and a case at the same time without the protector getting pushed up. I want to use a case with a tempered glass protector but it is not possible. I'll never buy another edge phone.
  • If this is the case (we won't truly know until the official announcement) then I am done with Note's and heading to the 6P.
  • Yeah. Done with Sammy I think. I was fairly sure I already was, but I was waiting to see what the new Note looked like (and realistically I still am) before deciding for sure. Such beautiful screens but I really don't like the Edge designs. Oh well, it's not like there isn't a surfeit of other options. =)
  • Wow, that sucks for the people who hate this kind of thing. :( Not sure why someone thought this was a good idea.
  • More than likely it is because the S7 Edge is selling really well.
  • The screen size and battery size are why the edge is selling well. I'd bet 80% of users don't use most of the edge features. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Bingo. I never use the Edge features. I just wanted a bigger display and battery. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I am with you. I would rather have more screen real estate instead of a curved "gimmick" screen. I might feel different after I get it and use it, but for now, I think it would be best if they released 2....but, from a cost perspective, they might not....why make 2 different models of the basically the same phone (other than the screen).
  • Yep to each their own. I use the edge features multiple times daily. Especially the apps page where I have quick access on any page or app to my highest use apps. luvin my s7 edge
  • Yep, some people use it and that's fine. But not everyone uses it or wants it. I thought that was the whole point of having the S7 Edge be bigger, to bridge the gap between the S7 and the Note. I don't see the note working well with a curved screen for those that actually use the note for its note features. It would be like writing on the edge of a table all the time. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I'm sure those features can easily be implemented on a non-Edge device though, right? Posted via the Android Central App
  • +1 All of the edge features could be implemented on a flat screen. Posted via the Android Central App
  • It doesn't matter if people use the edge features or not. I have 6 edge devices on both sides of my family, and they all were drawn to it due to the way it looks. None of them cared about the battery size. You have a higher opinion of the general public's intellect than I do, to think that the vast majority made a decision based on anything more than looks.
  • This^ The edge is eye catching
  • I do agree with you, and I don't hold a high opinion of the general public. For the general public I completely agree it was probably purchased on looks as most of them don't even remove the default widgets or change the home screen. For the informed user it was likely battery and screen size followed by the edge features 3rd. I held both at BB before I got my S7 on release day, I couldn't stand how the edge felt, but to each their own.
  • I use my edge to access the flashlight every single day. But that's honestly it. Occasionally take advantage of the new text tabs that show up. Galaxy s7 edge
  • My wife has the LG V10....it has that "extra" screen on the top......she never uses it....that is a waste of space...and she agrees....but then again, she isn't a power user, so it doesn't bother her. I think the "curve" will be wasted space for me...but who knows, maybe I will warm up to it.
  • I use an edge app on my Note 4 flat screen to access frequently used apps / contacts and I can just hold down my menu button for torch or I can assign any button to do what ever i wanted it to do. Edge is a gimmick. Hope there is 2 version or I'm sticking with the Note 4 and either waiting till next year or seeing what the new nexus is like.

  • Galaxy Note 7?. I think is going to be Galaxy Note 6. Posted via the Android Central App
  • The rumor has been Samsung will skip the 6 to make the Note line branding match the S line branding and less confusing for customers.
  • Or, you know, the same number as the iPhone. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Consumers have always been confused, I've had many people think the S6 is newer and better than the Note 5 simply due to naming. I recently quit selling phones, so I know how the average person walking into a phone store can be clueless. Had a few people last year think the G4 was out dated compared to the S6 and IPhone 6 because it's only a 4. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Oh. That would made sense Posted via the Android Central App
  • Remember when software used to be sequentially numbered...until some time around the late 90s when they started naming it by the year it was released (presumably because of the nice round "2000" number)? Maybe they ought to just move to this naming convention. I wondered what they would do when they got to the 7th Nexus phone since there was already a tablet with the name Nexus 7. Granted, it doesn't seem all that confusing when talking about the "Galaxy S7" and the "Note 6"...but if it bothers people that much, maybe it ought to just be "2016 Galaxy S" and "2016 Note".
  • Windows 95 started that trend.
  • I was thinking that maybe they will release this as the Note 6....then in Jan. 2017 release a Note 7 and then next Summer release the Note 8.....extra hardware to produce, but I can see them doing that.
  • If Samsung release only a curved note I will not buy another Samsung product. I've bought every iteration of the galaxy s and note range. I'm living in Ireland and the note 5 never got released here which was disappointing so I had to get it imported. It's simply not good enough to upset customers the way Samsung have been doing the last year or so. I have always been a Samsung fan boy and if this news is true which I hope it isn't they will have lost another customer. I personally just don't like the curved versions of the phones. I don't see a real purpose of them although they do look very nice and it's great innovation for the smartphone market. I also do not believe they have sold more curved than flat displays. Another thing NOTE 7 seriously like? It's simply not good enough from a company like Samsung. Shame on you. Posted via the Android Central App

  • You are right
The flat note 5 out sold its edge counterpart 2-1 last year ...
If they release 2 versions again, the flat version will definitely outsell the edge one
Having an edge only version doesn't make any sense
They will loose half the note buyers at least with this decision

  • How does Samsung expect people to use the s-pen on the curved edges?
  • Well you don't need to write on the curved portion. Seems simple to me. luvin my s7 edge
  • So make the usable part of the screen smaller while screwing over a number of apps that go edge to edge. Auto desk sketchbook or Artrage would be terrible on a curved display. Way I see it an S Pen with a curved display harms productivity and usability of the device. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I just downloaded Sketchbook Express on my s7 edge...while I don't use this type of software on a regular basis, at first glance it doesn't seem like there would be a problem.

  • I am not sure how I feel about this. My dad just picked up an S7 Edge and while I like it, I just don't know if it is something I would be interested in owning. I am going to wait until they announce it, but at least the renders seem to show a phone with a slightly less extreme edge than the S7 Edge. Samsung has been hitting it out of the park lately with their hardware, I don't mind waiting to see what they have to show off before coming to a conclusion.
  • There's no way this is gonna play nice with the S Pen. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Noooooooooo. I will wait for the unfoldable tablet-phone...
  • Some people will not like it.. But this would be the best of both worlds for me. Can't wait I miss my Note.. S7 edge...Soon to be Note 7 edge
  • Have they ever thought that maybe there s7edge sells so well because many of us want the bigger battery and suffer with the edge version just because of that? I hate touching the edges and it screwing up what I'm doing. Or that I can't seem to pick the number one on the keyboard because it sits on the edge. I would have the regular s7 if it had the same size battery. I was really hoping the note would solve that. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I was hoping to get my first Note this year but not if the curved edges are the only option. I just don't see the value in them. Posted via the Android Central App
  • If this is true I wonder if it would have the edge software as well as the additional note/S-pen software. Would make sense if it have 6+ ram because that sounds like a lot going on. Love for all things android and IT
  • I will wait to see it, hold it in my hand, test it myself, and then make a decision. I am not gonna make post about how bad it is, and how I will never buy Samsung again. Especially when I don't know first hand how it will be. #Teamwaitandsee Posted via the Android Central App
  • It will be like a slightly larger S7 Edge. Posted via the Android Central App
  • *sigh* WIll Samsung never learn? I was all set to go back to the Note this year. While a curved screen isn't a deal-breaker for me, it's still pretty close to one. I much prefer a flat screen, especially considering the issues I've seen people had with mistaken presses of icons on that curved part.
  • Exactly! Posted via the Android Central App
  • There will be a flat one. Samsung themselves leaked two model numbers for the note line. One curved and one flat. There will be 2 phones that launch in August Posted via the Android Central App
  • Will Samsung ever learn what? To cater to your needs specifically because all I saw in your post was a whole bunch of I and me.
  • Learn to not cater to a specific group of people and needlessly exclude others, obviously?
  • Duffin.....the edge is great. Stupid people complain about the edge , because they are too stupid on how to properly use it. Stupidity is the fault of the user. Not the manufacturer Posted via the Android Central App
  • Not liking something does not make everyone else stupid.. No need to be a "fanboy", it's ok for someone to not like something,... I love Samsung products and own mostly Samsung products, but I will not defend every decision and every product.. To me and many others, a curved screen is not ideal for a "Note" product, if you use it for the "Note" functions as it gives less usable screen space and no one likes writing on curved paper... It basically turns the Note into just an S7 Edge with a pen, not a productivity device that can do it all.
  • I'm sure the phone will be amazing feature and spec wise but I really have no use for an edge screen. It looks cool but I am disappointed so far. I was looking forward to a flat version. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Marshmallow has arrived for att note 5 ! Posted via the Android Central App
  • Are you sure about that?. I been waiting for this for months. Posted via the Android Central App
  • This isn't entirely surprising. Samsung's modus operandi has always been to cram up all their innovation into the latest flagship. The probable reason all S7s didn't have a curved display is finding source(s) that can produce so many of them. Which they now have. S-Pen intergaration will be pure tricks now. • Samsung seem determined to make a complete balls of what once one of their most anticipated releases every year. I can't speak for everyone but a note device is for productivity so why have two stupid curves on it? Posted via the Android Central App
  • Well that sucks. Glad I got an S7. If they eliminate the flat screen on the S8 I'll be done with Samsung. It's already irritating enough that the regular S7 has a small curve on the edges of the screen that causes issues with screen protectors. The edge still seems like a gimmick to me. I know some people like it and use it but to me the device is really exposed and open to accidental touches and easy break if dropped. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Personally hate the S6 Edge plus and S7 Edge because they can't be used one handed like a flat screened phone of that size. Won't be able to get a tempered glass screen protector, and writing notes/ drawing I will get less screen real state, as I can't write over a curved edge. Rather use a dated Note 3 than Note 7 if it's got a curved display. Posted via the Android Central App
  • There are tempered curved protectors available for edge variants of the s7. I'm sure the same will surface for the Note7 luvin my s7 edge
  • I use my s7 edge one-handed all the time. However, I'm left-handed so I avoid the edge panel.
  • What I don't understand is that they went from the Note 5 to the Note 7. What happened to the Note 6. Maybe they are catching up with the S series. I don't know. Personally I like a flat screen. If this happens than I'm going with iPhone. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Yeah, they are trying to bring the S line and the Note line to naming parity
  • Me too. And I said I never would. But I don't want curved screen. Don't like it Posted via the Android Central App
  • I see several people talking about unusable parts of the Edge screen and I haven't had that experience at all. • I read that the two versions will be a "basic" model and a higher end model. One with the 820 and one with the 823. 4GB ram and 6GM ram. thoughts? I would think the curved edges would lead to more screen touches that were unintentional. Fingers or palm wrapped around the phone

  • I am just about ready to accept no spare battery and fragile for no reason glass back as long as I have SD... Curves I would not accept on a Note device... It is not needed and a hindrance if you actually use the "Note" part.... Basically, it would make it just an S7 Edge with a pen (taking a back seat) vs. a "productivity device"... They already screwed up on the Gear S 2.. My old Gear S's S-voice was always accurate and I still love it.. My Gear S2 Classic (3G) get's everything wrong, every time, says contacts that exist, don't exist... Just a prettier downgrade..
  • They lost one customer for sure. I wonder how many they will gain? I assume this is so they can sell them at a higher cost and they're hoping the same number of people buy them at that increased price..

As for the curved display, like the majority, I'm not feeling it if it's the only note model. Price being the main factor. Samsung jacks up the price by what is it, more than $100. The note is expensive as is already.

  • Was seriously considering going back to a Note after a couple years on my N6 (Note 2 before that), but definitely not with the "edge" screen.
  • Let no man stand between Samsung and a useless gimmick.
  • Its a SAMSUNG exclusive feature / brand .. Apple doesn't have and the others don't have .. Also makes another service /part opportunity that generic glass won't fit upon damage or fail ..you will have to buy the real digitizer and screen combo I tend to go for the flats because it is one more feature the updates don't have to make work ... so faster updates and more ROMs . • I have been waiting to see what they offer...my "pay as you go" plan on my Note 4 is paid off in October. If it's curved only, I will buy a different phone...or just keep the one I have!
  • Welp, adios, Note 7. Samsung loves screwing up the Note line.
  • Right now Samsung sells just as many edge 7 as the regular 7 there's a sea of look a like phones out there right now . they'd love to keep the sales in the black. I'm sure they won't mess this up. I recall on these very cites folks reaction to the nexus 6p saying how ugly it was and those same folks ended up buying it anyway. • I'm just cracking up at the amount of complaints about a phone that no one is sure what it contains yet. Especially considering that when Android Central conducted its last poll most of you said the 7 Edge is your favorite phone. Look if you don't want a Note 7 edge don't buy it, wait a while and I'm sure Samsung will come out with a note Active or Note Regular or something else with straight edges that will be to your liking. As for me I'm looking to see if/how Samsung plans on implementing their "write on edge" patent they have...hopefully on this phone. But I wouldn't be worried if I was Samsung...I remember all of the complaints that came up when the N5 came out and then how many of those same complainers ended up buying it anyway. If you could buy that Note, you'll buy any. :)
  • If Samsung makes the very aggressive and dumb decision to only go with Edge on the Note 7, many of us will bolt. I will remind you that it was also a very dumb and aggressive decision to remove SD expansion and battery removal, which cost them sales.
  • I do not want a curved display. I much prefer the flat.

  • I used to own the note 4,I switched to the original note edge because I like the curve, I now have the S7edge because I like the idea of both sides curved even more, but, I do miss the Samsung pen. Yes I was having issues with my hands touching the edge and doing things that I didn't want, but putting a case on it solves the issue. So if the new one does have dual edges, and they don't take away any of the features that the s7edge has, I will be getting it. Especially if they offer the new VR with it

  • I think there will only be the curved style. Samsung wants to.push curved screens. I don't know if I will get it. And Samsung is all I have ever used. Even when I had a dumb phone yrs ago. I prefer Samsung but I might switch. Not a fan of the curved screen Posted via the Android Central App
  • I agree....Samsung makes tough products. I had an old samsung flip phone from 2006. I left it on my car and left my parents house (in the country). The phone fell off the car....bounced on the ground and I thought was lost.....3 days later, someone walking their dog found it......called the last number (my parents) and we got the phone back....it was dinged up. Another time, after I gave it to my son....he left it in his pocket and I washed his pants......came out and went through the dryer......it was DEAD. Took it to Verizon and got a new battery......fired right up. I still have that phone somewhere. This is why I love Samsung products!
  • It's simple, no regular version of the Note then I'm on to other manufacturers.
