Lenovo just announced an Android phone with 12GB of RAM

Although Lenovo is associated pretty much exclusively with computers here in the U.S., the company's also well-known for its smartphone business in other parts of the world. Most recently, Lenovo announced the Z5 Pro GT in China with a few headlining features — the most buzzworthy of which is its whopping 12GB of RAM.

That's the most RAM we've yet to see in a smartphone, even beating the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition and its 10GB offering. Having access to so much system memory doesn't really have that much of a real-world benefit on Android right now, but it is a cool bragging right nonetheless.

In addition to the monstrous amount of RAM, the Lenovo Z5 Pro GT is equipped with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 855 processor, 512GB of storage, a 6.39-inch AMOLED display, dual 16MP + 24MP rear cameras, a 3,350 mAh battery, NFC, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Similar to some other phones released this year, the Z5 Pro GT doesn't have a notch in its screen and instead uses a slider design to house the front-facing cameras and earpiece for phone calls.

It's very unlikely that the Z5 Pro GT will ever make its way to the States, but if you happen to live in China, you'll be able to buy one for yourself starting January 15 when pre-orders open up. Pricing starts at around $390 USD for the model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, or you can step up to the behemoth 12GB RAM + 512GB storage variant for $640.

If you could purchase the Lenovo Z5 Pro GT, would you? Let us know in the comments below!

  • Looks good, although slow updates will keep me away.
  • Nice. I am so glad there seems to be a second set of manufacturers/phones that are ditching the notch and going for something different. I don't care about the front camera at all so if they have to go this bezeless route I would much rather they do it this way than with a notch or glory hole.
  • Wow you seem to be the only writer doing content articles instead of just putting your name on sponsored pieces.
  • Quite the price jump between models. Otherwise I would be intrigued.
  • For internal storage jump, that's about the average - $100 / 128 gb.
And on top you double the RAM. Pretty good deal.
  • Pisses me off that this won't come to the US... the land of mindless iphones and galaxy users
  • Slider over notch any day if its a quality mechanism If I had to choose, but guess you lose the IP Rating until that is figured out. 12GB is silly but fun.
  • It's nice to have options and all, but I think I'd rather have some non screen space at the top instead of a bezel less screen with a slider to hide the rest when it's not in use.
  • Battery seems a bit small but other than that I would be all in if this was a US phone
  • 512GB and 12GB for 690 sign me up
  • Now hand it over to the Motorola part of Lenovo and let them make the Moto Z4 this way, while maintaining the current Moto Mod support. The biggest downside with this design is that any case for your phones basically has to choose an area which gets no support - I assume they'd go with the bottom of the screen half.
  • I'd love to see this as a Motorola device.
  • And just like past Lenovo phones, they'll drop support for this like it's hot soon after release.
  • And the point of 12GB is...?
  • 12GB is not enough RAM
  • so at $390 for the 6 gig SD855 version...wouldn't that be the deal of the century?
