What you need to know

  • Google and Spotify want to help keep you entertained this summer.
  • Spotify's Songs of Summer playlist includes its predictions for the most popular songs this summer.
  • The Summer Rewind playlist, meanwhile, will play your favorite songs from summers past.

If being cooped up at home all summer is getting to you, worry not, for Spotify and Google are on the case. The duo this week announced two new summer-themed playlists, with full support for Google Assistant, of course.

"Spanning a variety of genres—from hip-hop to indie—Spotify's Songs of Summer predictions are based on a number of factors like streaming numbers, current trajectory and future forecasting from their global curation team," reads the blog from Google. The two companies, based on user data over the past few months, expect "This is America" by Childish Gambino and "Alright" by Kendrick Lamar to be the most popular tracks this summer.

And if you'd like to listen to that song you played on a date last summer, but can't quite remember its name, Spotify's Summer Rewind playlist might be just what you're looking for. It looks at your favorite songs from summers past and automatically curates a playlist based on your preferences. The Summer Rewind playlist will be available to both free and premium subscribers in all of Spotify's markets in the Northern Hemisphere on both Android and iOS starting this week.

You can get Assistant to start playing these summertime serenades around the house, via your Google Home or Nest device, with the "Hey Google, play Songs of Summer" and "Hey Google, play Your Summer Rewind playlist on Spotify" commands, respectively.
