Sprint Premier customers can snag it July 28

Motorola Photon 4G

Sprint just dropped word that the long-awaited Motorola Photon 4G -- the first Wimax device from Moto -- will be available on July 31 for $199 on contract. As you'll recall from our hands-on with it in June, it's a 4.3-inch Gorilla Glass-sporting, 8MP-shooting, 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2-processing, Gingerbread world phone, with Sprint ID thrown in to boot.

More specs, straight from the source:

  • Dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor with each core running at 1GHz and 1GB of RAM
  • Large 4.3-inch touchscreen with qHD (Quarter High Definition) display
  • Dual cameras – 8-megapixel, dual-LED flash camera with front-facing webcam and VGA front-facing camera for video chat
  • Android Market™ for access to more than 200,000 useful applications, widgets and games available for download to customize the experience
  • 16GB of onboard memory, support for up to 32GB SD Card, for a total of up to 48GB
  • Worldphone capabilities to access emails, calendars and news from anywhere around the globe
  • 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot capability, supporting up to eight devices on the Sprint 3G or 4G networks.
  • Supports critical IT device policies commonly requested by enterprises and governmental entities, including integration ease, cost-of-management and data security concerns

And because we know some of you are going to ask, no, it's not supposed to ship with an unlocked bootloader. Remember that Motorola said it'd get into the unlocking thing in late-2011. July is mid-2011. So let's all wait a couple more months before we go through this with every new Moto phone that's announced, m'kay?

That said, we're plenty excited to see a phone with this much depth and power on Sprint. What about y'all?

Sprint's Motorola Photon 4G available July 31 for $199 on contract

Oh YESSSSS THIS phone will be my next phone upgrade in December!! Looking forward to getting rid of SENSE.

Dude if u dont like sense you will hate blur or whatever they call it now. Im gonna take my 3D back for the photon 2c how good battery life is on it. But I know I wont have much xda or rooting support

IF this thing had NFC i'd consider it.... SPrint did say they just didn't have time to put it in. . . But MOTO-BLUR is just a headache...

With the release of this though I guess we'll be waiting even LONGER for the SGS2!!!

Trust me man Blur is just THAT BAD don't do it to yourself.... Even TouchWiz got a WHOLE LOT better with 4.0 on the S2. Blur is just still blur

Thats why we have launcher pro! Personally if you want performance out of your phone rather than flashy graphics blur is better. I don't like any of them but sense and touchwiz are just RAM hogs.

You know Sprint has a "Get out of Hell Free" card for when you're stuck in a Verizon contract.

$125 credit :)

...one of my CO-WORKERS had T-MOBiLE(motorola cliq)and last week he joined SPRINT(evo 4g). He said,"it CHANGED MY LIFE,MAN."...LOL.

I think waiting till Dec 2011 is looking like the best bet. Neither this nor the 3D is making me think about dropping my OG EVO running a custom ROM.

What ROM? I got CM7.1 but I'm getting bored...... And if you're going to wait until December... CES is in January... Might as well wait unitl then

Have you tried MikG? I left CM7 for it and love it. But I understand if you don't like Sense. I enjoyed CM7 but it seemed you had to jump through hoops to get many things that I use regularly to work.

I got on CM7.1 for a while, liked it but don't love it. 4G wasn't working well for me, and I don't like the dialer, or the low res facebook pics. Went to try Synergy, and I have to say you should too. I don't feel it is slower than CM, and that's saying a lot. It gives you a lot of sense 3.0 features. Battery life is awesome so far. Recommended. (I also had MikG previously, which is very good as well. But the nod goes to Synergy... if only for the fact that synergy is developed by a team.. so more resource.. more polished.)

It can't be any worse than Sense, with random soft reboots after closing random applications after the Gingerbread update. There is always Launcher Pro, which is better than any vendor specific interface (and Apple can't sue over it).

Yeah Sense is pretty annoying. I noticed my dads Evo Shift randomly doing the soft reboots after closing random applications. Also the new carousel is annoying on 3.0 because it always goes past the page you want to flick to and starts spinning in circles. Also I hate the launcher page and how it does a page at a time instead of one row at a time like on my NS4G...

Sense is so bulky it makes the 3D lag and that has some of the best hardware out there. HTC went too far with all the flashy junk.

You could very well wait until December. Sprint will probably already have the Samsung Within and the HTC Knight available for your choosing.

If you really want options, that is.... I have the Evo 3D and it's great!

Agreed, get over Blur people, if you don't like it, use Launcher Pro or root it... just let it go, thats like saying you don't like that Corvette because it comes with leather interior. Just swap it out! LoL Geez, worry about the specs and not the skin.. looks like some of you forget about the beauty of Android-fully customizable!

EXACTLY!! I don't know why people keep saying blur sucks as if there's no choice in the matter. It's called LauncherPro or ADW people.

And I don't know why ignorant people keep pretending that the launcher is the only thing customized by manufacturers... Sense, Blur, and TW go much deeper than that. Everything from the camera to the calendar is also customized, from the dialer and contacts app to the browser, even the settings page and account management, and the gallery, etc etc.

The launcher should be the least of your worries, since it's the easiest to swap out... Rooting isn't a solution either, most Moto devices still come with a locked bootloader and they have yet to lay concrete plans for unlocking (unlike HTC who's well on their way); that means you can't install AOSP ROMs like Cyanogenmod...

Some of the apps I've mentioned aren't hard to replace with 3rd party options, but if you want the original Google/Android alternatives you're out of luck without an unlocked bootloader (and thus no way to install an AOSP ROM).

Full disclosure: I actually like Sense, mostly due to the lockscreen and some of the extras like the pick-up and turn-over ringer customizations... But I despise the Sense launcher with it's dumb carousel and no dock, so I use ADW. I also happen to think the latest Blur-not-Blur isn't all that bad, but unlike Sense it doesn't really add anything of value to Android (except maybe those custom app drawer tabs, they're more intuitive than ADW's arrows).

I thought about holding out for this but Moto is too sketchy with the updates. Wasn't feeling the moto-bloat either. But the specs are killer. Gonna have to live with my Evo3D.

Evo 3D all the way!!!

I can't knock the Photon since it isn't out yet, but I love my Evo 3D.

Just glad to see so many available options on Sprint :D

Based on specs alone, this sounds like the Moto beast that we're supposed to get on US Cellular later this year (US Cell is always a few months behind). Me thinks me better start saving some coinage. This things a beast!

Hahahaha so many people are sooooo hung up on Moto Blur when the reality of this is; It's gonna get rooted and the launcher will be replaceable. Roms will be made and the phone will be optimized. I would buy it just for the hardward aspects. There is no phone out there with superior hardware.

Really good specs. Only missing three things to make this a must buy for me. NFC, 2.0 Megapixel front-facing camera, and HTC (Sorry, but I just love HTC phones and their Sense UI).

This is the sound of my comment going right over your head.

Obviously I understood his joke, hence the follow-up joke parallel to his.

Finally a Moto phone that has all the bells and whistles....well almost.

1. WIMAX - ROFLCOPTER......lame. Need this on Verizon LTE
2. qHD screen.....ugh. Hopefully, Moto ditches this crap by next Spring when I'm due for an upgrade.

So what's better, a tegra 2 or eniox? I'm not sure if I spelled the CPU from Samsung correct but I heard tegra was not that crack up to be like NVIDIA says it is. I like the fact it comes with 16gb Rom built in.

Is it just me, or does Moto make the most Fugly phones. HTC, while making them almost all look alike these days, still makes the most astectically pleasing devices. Sammy has iPhone envy with their design, LG is extra plain (which isn't always bad) and Moto is just plain unattractive.

I know it's hard to make an all touchscreen phone stand out, but I know there has to be some design teams out there that could do better than the current people at all of these companies.

I'm trading my EVO in for this puppy and slapping SPB Shell 3D on it to hide the "Blur"... I think this will be a sweet "Xoom in a pocket" phone!(except for being GB and not HC)

GREATTTTTT!!!!!!! Definetly gonna cop this...THE EVO 3D IS BUT UGLY..!!!!! AND THAT 3D S*** IS A JOKE..!!! I'll settle for a 8mp cam....GO MOTO!!!!!!

You are whacked.
If you think this thing is not ugly and the 3D is ugly, then you have no taste. And the number of "mp" in a camera means little to nothing.

2 questions first how many mah is the battery..I can't plug my phone in at work (12 hours). Second is there a wimax off toggle because there is no Sprint 4G in my area.

The battery is 1750 mAh
There was a picture of the Photon 4G with a "4G toggle" widget (MOTO Style) on the screen
I hope that's what are you looking for

3d is ugly and a joke! Lol! The EVO 3d sh**ts all over this thing! I have 10 3d movies downloaded and always get people jealous when watching them! Already had 6 coworkers switch to sprint just to get it! What you're "definetly gonna cop" is a boring ads phone that does the same things thousands of others do with nothing to separate itself! Don't get me wrong, I'm glad sprint has these choices, get what is right for u! But to try to slam the best phone ever created so far, u are obviously not speaking from experience. " if It's not an EVO....It's only a phone!"

Just curious if you recommended a place besides converting through handbreak or buying through htc watch to get 3d movies. Any tips? Thanks

I have the EVO and for over 6 months i have used Launcher Pro. I forget what Sense is! I agree with those that just look at the specs. Load whatever launcher you want. Be happy.

Hmph...locked bootloader and no chance of it being unlocked? I'm holding out either until the 3D is unlocked or the next big thing comes along with an unlocked bootloader. If I buy a phone it HAS to be MY phone. I don't tether or use any services I don't pay for, but I want to play, mod., change, upgrade UI on my terms. Anyway still having too much fun with my launch day OG Evo to be bored to tears with just "another" phone.

Badass specs, but I think I'll stick with my flip phone. Its just way to much trouble wasting several seconds installing launcherpro over blur. Not that blur bothers me. I've never used it actually. But I just like jumping on the band Wagon of hate because at heart I'm just a sheep.

if some of you think sprints "network" is superior to verizon your nuts. sprints wimax and network is a mess right now. and as far as the photon i think it looks hideous.

Sprint's network (both 3G and 4G) works great for me, plus it's way cheaper and still includes unlimited data. So for me, Sprint IS superior to Verizon.

So... EVO 3d or Photon?? I'm in a dilemma. Sgs2 should be arriving at some point... And there are rumors of a September launch of the.... Okay I won't say it lol. But I will say us Sprint customers have plenty options. Which one should I choose?

Right now? If you don't mind headaches, get the 3d. If you don't mind not hacking get the photon. I might get the photon just for the kickstand.

The atrix has a 4" screen with the same amount of pixels. wouldn't that make the atrix screen look less pixelated than the 4.3?
Also the atrix has a larger battery.

I think I'm leaning towards the atrix (assuming 2.3.4 is coming soon)

Im waiting for an HTC slider phone with great hardware specs with either WP7 or Android and a front-facing cam. Until then I might have to get this one!

Looks like a nice phone.....but if it's July 2011 and I still have people jealous over me having a Custom ROM OG Evo....why rush for another phone? I AM glad that Sprint finally has another world phone, but I'm happy with what I've got.

Love my EVO 4g with KingsRom. Sense 3.0 FTW. However, I'd love a dual core with 16gb on board and and SD card? that's alot of memory. Definelty going to wait a few months to see what else Sprint has up their sleeve.

I think this will be my next device. I do still love my EVO 4G but I think it's time to move on. I keep seeing posts from people complaining about MotoBlur but we always have LP or ADW to change that.

Are there any reports or comparison on reception and signal strength for the EVO 3D and any speculation on the Photon? I ask because I live in a fringe coverage area. With my EVO 3D, I typically have to have my WiFi turned on to get data (while call quality seems to be okay but fluctuates during a call). I thought (or want to think) that my EVO 4G had better reception. I say this because I do not remember getting these frequent messages on my EVO 3G that says network not available like I am getting on my EVO 3D.

Will the SMR/800 MHz radio help resolve some or all of this?

Anyway, I am still inside the 30-day return window for the EVO 3D. I don't want to regret making a switch if I should be patient and hope for a fix. Otherwise, the EVO 3D and the EVO 4G have been great phones for me. Thx!

My apologies. I will post this to the EVO 3D forum. I posted here because the Photon interests me and might be an alternative. Life could not be much better where I have quality choices between HTC and Moto.

Does anyone know if the Moto Photon 4g will be able to use the Moto Atrix's battery? If so this will be the perfect phone!
