HP cans rumored Android tablet

Remember how HP has been working on tablets running several OS's? All Things Digital's John Paczkowski has gotten a tip that HP has decided to shelve (at least for the time being) a tablet running Android:

"Hewlett Packard is working on a variety of tablet PCs, running a variety of operating systems. Among them, an Android device that was supposed to arrive at market in the fourth quarter of 2010. But no longer. Sources in position to know tell me that HP’s Android slate has been delayed and won’t ship before the end of the year as planned."

HP is a huge company, but they do have limited resources. It is not too hard to imagine that they would want to dedicate their resources to  Windows Phone 7... phones while also "doubling down" on webOS for both tablets and printers

For anyone looking for an Android tablet, there are still options out there. The Dell Streak is running wild and Verizon is looking to offer an iPad competitor later this year as well. [All Things Digital

Qik extends free premium services through September

qik application

The folks over at Qik have announced that they will continue to allow the free use of premium services through the month of September.  They acknowledge their "rocky start" and in return are throwing all of us using the HTC Evo 4G a bone:

Heya Android Qikkers – with the launch of the new Android client and video chat capability on HTC EVO 4G, we announced premium services for Qik that will enable you to get much more from your everyday Qikking. With the announcement we had an offer to provide the premium services for free till July 15, 2010. We understand that we had a bit of a rocky start with the new and improved Qik and so as a small token of appreciation we are now extending the offer to enjoy Qik’s premium services for free till end of September.

Happy Qikking!

Seems that video chat and conferencing is turning out to be more popular here in the states than any of us expected.  Us Evo-ers took Qik out Qikkly last month, and the addition of a fruit flavored phone with a front camera brought Fring to it's knees.  Hopefully everyone involved can rebound, and we can all have fun seeing just how goofy we look again! Droid X now available online, in stores once they open

Motorola Droid X online

OK, you crazy kids. (We've been watching your countdown in the forums.) The Motorola Droid X is now officially available on Verizon's website. So order yours and go to bed. Or at least let us go to bed. You also should be able to get one in the morning at various brick-and-mortar locations. (We'll still be in bed, or possibly eating waffles.) And if you want, you can still enter to win one from us. For free. Just sayin'. [Verizon Wireless]

Album art live wallpaper shows how bad your musical taste is

Album art live wallpaper

Once again the developers at AndroidGamer have an awesome new Live Wallpaper to share with us.  You might remember their last jewel, Advanced Map Live Wallpaper, from when we had a look at it last month.  Well, Album Art live wallpaper is just as original!  The application scans your music, and pulls out the album art to create a collage of sorts as your wallpaper.  It's chock full of settings, and according to the developers the features include:

  • Variable cover size
  • Shuffle
  • Automatic refresh
  • Battery friendly
  • Smooth scrolling
  • LauncherPro support

We've been using it for a bit now and are having a tad of trouble getting it to recognize our collection of Hungarian folk tunes, so your mileage may vary.

You can get Album Art live wallpaper  on the Android Market for 99 cents, or there's a demo version for free! (Live wallpapers only work with Android 2.1 and higher!)

Like ton's of other apps, this one comes from the minds and hearts of the guys over at Xda-Developers, and you can check out the official support thread HERE.  Links and more pics after the break.  Thanks David!

ADW.Launcher gets a big update

ADW Launcher

For those not familiar with ADW.Launcher, it is one of the most feature enriched launcher replacements available for Android at the current time. Lately it seems as though developers have really been pushing themselves to the next level and attempting to add things we never would have expected, and AnderWeb doesn't appear to be any different. In the latest release they have added theme support which allows users to select between four current themes, two of which are free, and two of which are paid ($1 each). In addition to the theme support, a few minor bugs have been added, and development continues. Remember folks, this is a one-man team behind the scenes, so donate and buy the themes so the amazing development efforts can be rewarded. Download now from the market. [via ADW Things]

AT&T Samsung Captivate hands-on

Samsung Captivate on AT&T

The Samsung Captivate on AT&T actually will be the second phone in the Galaxy S line to be released in the United States, but it's the first to have reached our hands. So, let's give it a go. It's got a 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera (no flash, though), a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, and more customizations than you can shake a stick at.

Seriously, despite everything we can say about AT&T and Android (and we've said plenty), it's quite apparently after even just a few minutes that the Captivate (and all of the Galaxy S phones, for that matter) is a hell of a phone. It's just about the perfect size, it's light, it's fast, and the software is pretty darn good.

We're going to take our time and really put the Captivate though its paces. But for now, check out an initial (and very, very quick) hands-on after the break.

Hit the forums to read about the app and for the download and support links, and remember -- legal files only, m'kay? [Android Central Forums]

WeReward for Android can help you earn some extra money

Looking for an easy way to make a couple extra bucks? WeReward is kind of like Foursquare – in a sense that you check in to different businesses around your area and will share it on social networking clients such as Twitter and Facebook.  However, the difference is that this app actually pays you for it, and sometimes it’s more than just clicking the ‘checkin’ button. For example, you may get points for taking of a picture of yourself with an Applebees waitress, or uploading a snapshot of your receipt. Each point is equal to a penny, and while it may sound tedious, there are 15 million businesses around the country that are participating, and some that will offer hundreds of points so you might need to shop around a little.  After you've racked up some heavy loot, you can cash out using Paypal.  It's a great marketing idea, and at the same time a fun way to put some extra cash in your pocket. Verizon selling 32GB microSD card for $100 when you buy a Droid X

32GB microSD card

Our pals at PhoneScoop are reporting that Verizon is offering a 32GB microSD card for $100 when purchased with a Droid X, which conveniently goes on sale on Thursday for $199. Without a Droid X, the card will cost you $150. That's still a chunk of change either way, but you'll be the first on your block with the largest phone and the largest storage. And can you really put a price on that? [PhoneScoop]
