Surprisingly, Android Market doesn't currently support paid applications in Canada (11 other countries have access to paid apps). But given that Canadian carriers have built a rather formidable Android product lineup, getting paid apps on Android Market in Canada should be pretty high priority. And it looks like it's so, according to the Montreal Gazette, "Google is working on the problem and hopes to make an announcement next week." Score one for our neighbors to the north.

Why'd it take so long? Wendy Rozeluk of Google Canada says:

"There are many factors that come into play to make sure the selling and purchasing processes run smoothly. It takes time to bring support to more countries, which is something we are working hard to do"

Right. If it's any consolation, at least Android Market has a ton of free apps available.

I CANT wait for this. I keep getting emails about my free app, and I'm going to post my paid app once Canada is allowed.

I will belive it when I see it :)

Seriously, this is ridiculous. I live in Poland and it's so f***ing annoying that we cannot officially purchase apps. Of course that's all load of bs, cause after installing MarketEnabler I can get buy anything I want - too bad I can't say to my friends "hey, check out this cool app I found the other day", cause you need to frickin hack your phone to get it! Google, wake up, pleeeease.

I wonder if this sudden change is any connected to the fact That PALM promised paid apps to canada/europe/etc in march? Coincidence, eh?

Well, it's just over a week later and no announcement from Google. I guess their hopes to make an announcement (and ours) have been dashed.
