ASUS Announces ZenFone 4, ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 6

New smartphone range offers various screen sizes, powerful Intel® Atom™ processors, several exciting colors and an exclusive user interface

Las Vegas, NV (January 6, 2014) — ASUS today announced ZenFone, a brand new high-value smartphone series that offers a choice of screen sizes ranging from 4 to 6 inches and is available in an array of striking colors — meaning there’s a ZenFone for everyone.

ZenFone 4 is a great-value smartphone that features two built-in cameras including a high quality 5-megapixel main camera for capturing life’s moments, a slim and lightweight design along with five vibrant colors — Charcoal Black, Pearl White, Cherry Red, Sky Blue, Solar Yellow that make a personality statement .

ZenFone 5 — combines a spacious HD display with a highly portable design

ZenFone 5 features a bright and clear 5-inch IPS panel that delivers a superb high-definition display in a stunning thin and lightweight design for easy portability.

Exclusive ASUS PenTouch and GloveTouch technologies increase ZenFone 5’s display sensitivity, making it possible to use the device with any stylus or even a gloved hand so frustrations about how and when users can interact with their phones become outdated.

ZenFone 5 has a fast, energy-efficient Intel Atom Z2580 processor running at 2GHz that provides instantaneous responses and excellent gameplay.  ZenFone 5 also benefits from a brilliant 8-megapixel PixelMaster main camera with image stabilization and a backside-illumination (BSI) sensor and wide-aperture f/2.0 lens with exclusive ASUS PixelMaster technology. This allows users to capture digital photographs that match those snapped by many dedicated digital cameras. Its 2-megapixel front camera takes sharp photos and provides high-quality video chat sessions.

ZenFone 5 is available in four statement colors that express your personality — Charcoal Black, Pearl White, Cherry Red, and Champagne Gold.

ZenFone 6 — perfectly blends productivity and entertainment on a beautiful 6-inch HD screen

ZenFone 6 also offers a brilliant 6” HD display and features GloveTouch and PenTouch technologies so users can operate the device with gloved hands or any stylus. It also has a powerful and responsive Intel Atom Z2580 processor running at 2GHz.

ZenFone 6’s large screen is complemented by ASUS SonicMaster audio technology with virtual surround sound via headphones for a truly immersive entertainment experience when watching movies, listening to music or playing games.

ZenFone 6 also includes a 13-megapixel main camera that features exclusive ASUS PixelMaster technology, and a 2-megapixel front camera for high-resolution video calls with friends, family and coworkers.

ZenFone 6 is available in the same personality statement colors — Charcoal Black, Pearl White, Cherry Red, and Champagne Gold.

ZenUI, open messaging and enhanced ASUS apps for Android

ZenFone 4, 5 and 6 all feature a new user interface from ASUS — ZenUI. Exclusive to ASUS smart devices, ZenUI is meticulously designed to help users make the most of the functionality enhancements packed into every ZenFone.  ZenUI delivers a great user experience with ease of use and functionality enhancements.  ZenFone knows what users need, helps to express their thoughts and feelings online and keeps them connected wherever they go.

ZenUI even includes free open messaging, powered by Omlet Chat on the Omlet Open Messaging Platform. This leading messaging tool lets users share almost any kind of content easily with anyone, on any phone — and all without racking up charges associated with sending traditional text (SMS) and picture (MMS) messages.

ASUS also added enhanced Android apps to every ZenFone device, making the phone simpler and easier to use for users. The ASUS-enhanced email app, for example, allows displaying of messages by thread to help keep track of conversations. Smart Reader Mode automatically adjusts the background tone to reduce eyestrain when viewing books, magazines or websites, while the Gallery app has enhanced online synchronization.

I really wish Asus would release a high-end phone (no Padfone). I would be all over it, as I am a huge Asus fan.

There are other sites you can go to. Those prices are correct and I'm loving it. Wish it used bay trail rather than clover trail. But hey at that price I don't care.

x86 Atom vs Cortex A7 on the Moto G, I'd say Atom wins. And the UI looks snappy on these. If ASUS supports the software these are very good options. Only question is what wireless bands are supported on HSPA+, besides internal storage.

I like what they are doing here, especially for certain markets, but I dislike them taking the Samsung approach of "more is more". A bloated UI overlay is not a feature, to be highlighted, for me. Another messaging platform, instead of the Google/Android standard of Hangouts? More enhanced apps that have been preloaded and locked on for your pleasure? Pass.

This is currently on 4.3. 4.4 was the first to not include the aosp messaging app in the Google build of kitkat.
This is still shipping with jelly bean. The kitkat update may make hangouts the default, but I'm not sure if they'll completely obliterate the stock messaging app in the update. (Nexus devices that shipped with jelly bean have chrome and not the aosp browser, but nexus devices updated to jerky bran kept the aosp browser)

For that price I'm willing to give Intel phone a try. I wonder how are their compatibility with Android apps overall. MicroSD is a huge plus, I would consider it over the Moto G for that.

I have the Razr i with an Intel chip in (virtually identical to the one going in here from what I see) and in the last year can think of maybe two apps that I couldn't have due to my CPU. It's not a reason to stop you buying one of these handsets in my opinion as performance on my handset has never disappointed me. I'm looking forward to seeing UK availability and prices!

Not bad price for decent specs. The moto g has a higher pixel density, but this is cheaper and includes a micro SD card slot.
Not entirely sold on the Intel chip, but no big deal.

Also, ASUS has (finally?) designed their own Android skin called "Zen UI", which will first be available on their ZenFone devices. I assume it's meant to compete with Samsung's TouchWiz and HTC's Sense.

The Zen UI looks like a hyrbid of Sense and iOS 7, with a very simplistic design language and bold colors. ASUS even created their own version of Google Now to help users with their daily activities.

PROS

Sturdy design and looks
Very good performance
Smooth, simple UI

CONS

Camera quality is disappointing
Display is slightly dull

Our Verdict
If Asus puts a “smart” price on the ZenFone 5, then it could set a cat among the pigeons and give the Moto G a run for its money. Asus ZenFone 5 offers a honest looking design and respectable performance capability. There are many other reliable brands out there in the market, and Asus has done a good job with the Zenfone 5. But having said that, it will have to do a lot more if it wants to give the other brands tough competition. The smartphone is not a bad choice if you are aiming for a mid-ranged device with a decent performance package and design, but quite honestly, there is room for improvement.
Asus Zenfone 5
Asus has a decent share of the tablet and laptop markets in India and now it is ready to plunge into the smartphone market as well. We had seen Asus’ updated line of ZenFone smartphones earlier this year and now the company has confirmed that it will be officially launching the ZenFone 5 in India by the second week of July. We managed to get a test unit of the smartphone before launch and here is our take on the Zenfone 5.

BUILD AND DESIGN
The ZenFone 5 has a standard candy bar design with a 5-inch 720p display protected with Gorilla Glass 3. Asus has used an IPS panel which offers pretty good viewing angles but somehow the display seems a bit dull. Even on the highest brightness settings, it looks very average. The bezels aren’t what you call slim especially above and below the display; this makes the device look and feel larger than many of the 5-inch devices that we have reviewed.

Above the display are the Asus logo, the earpiece, the front facing camera and the usual set of sensors. Below, we have the three capacitive Android navigation buttons and a metal textured accent underneath it.

The right edge houses the volume and power/lock key which have a metal finish. The top has the 3.5mm audio jack while the bottom has the microUSB port. The handset also has two microphones, each of them housed on the top and bottom edges. At the back you will find the 8MP camera with an LED flash, the loudspeaker and a couple of Asus and Intel logos. The back panel is essentially plastic with a matte finish. The panel comes off to reveal two microSIM card slots and a microSD card slot. The battery is non-user replaceable so in case you have any issues, you will have to head to the service centre.
The handset has a curved back which essentially makes the overall thickness come down to about 8mm. It does fit well in the palm and for the expected price of Rs. 15,000, it is definitely one of the well-built devices

I got the Zenfone 6. It's alright but I wish I knew about the Xiaomi MI3 before buying the Zenfone 6. It's such a pain cus I would have bought the MI3 instead. The MI3's cheaper but it looks much nicer and has better specs than the Zenfone 6. (on paper at least.)
