Weekly Photo Contest: Focus and Blur

Which picture came out as the top shot this week? It was a tough choice.

Riding on the release of Google Camera into the Play Store and new camera features from the Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8, we decided to set up this week's photo contest looking for the best sharp-focused and selectively-blurred pictures. With the combination of great hardware and new innovative software, it's getting easier to apply realistic blurring effects to already excellent photos — all within the phone.

With so many entries and such a huge prize at stake, it was even tougher than usual to pick out just one winner to take down the whole contest. In the end it had to be done, though, and you can see the winning shot below.

Winner of an HTC One M8 Google Play edition, jeddo45!

Weekly Photo Contest: Focus and Blur Winner

We said it was a tough battle, but when it came to picking just one, jeddo45 had all of the right stuff in this picture. The low point-of-view gave a very interesting effect, blurring out the pier along the background and letting the light come in through it just right. You get a narrow point with extremely sharp focus, and the rest artistically fades away. This shot was taken with a Nexus 5 in HDR, and it is entirely deserving of winning this week's contest.

Keep an eye on your doorstep and mailbox for a package, the HTC One M8 Google Play edition is on its way!

Thanks again to everyone else who entered, and keep your eyes peeled for the next photo contest. We want the chance to give away more great prizes to everyone, so keep taking pictures and entering them!

Glad I didn't have to choose the winner - there were so many good entries, it must have been very tough narrowing them down.

Congrats to jeddo45 - I expect to see you post some shots up in the M8 photo thread!

That is an extremely well balanced photo. Gorgeous lighting, too, especially considering you were using a phone's camera pointed directly at the sun.

When he posted that directly after mine in the thread on Saturday I got a bad feeling in my gut. I hoped I might get a few extra points for being a long time reader / poster and him being new. Doesn't being there for every AC podcast since episode 1 count for anything, haha? Oh well. Nice contest! Tons of great entries! Congrats jeddo

Need to sell that pic!!!! Perfect
