Acer Iconia Tab A510

Acer this morning announced that the new 10.1-inch Iconia Tab A510 (we're all friends here, let's just call it the A510) is now available for preorder for for $449. As you'll recall from our first look at CES back in January, the A510 is packing NVIDIA's Tegra 3 quad-core (OK, its 4-PLUS-1) system on a chip, with the extra fifth core for low-power tasks. It's got a 1280x800 resolution (at a 16:10 aspect ratio), which is looking a bit dated next to its big brother, the A700, to say nothing of the new iPad.

The A510, as it should, comes with Android 4.0 already on board, as well as with such productivity apps as Polaris Office 3.5, and Acer's own Acer Print. Other specs of note:

  • HDMI out
  • USB 2.0 port
  • 1GB RAM
  • 32GB storage
  • microSD card
  • Wifi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • 5MP rear camera, 1MP front-facing camera

The A510 also is an Olympic Games Tablet Edition (that should fit nicely with Acer's new Acer Ring quick-launcher that we first saw in the A200). It's got the Acer and Olympic logos printed on the soft-touch finish, which comes in either silver or black.

This processor provides a unique Super 4-PLUS-1™ Quad Core CPU design with a fifth Battery Saver Core that allows up to four cores to be dedicated to demanding tasks such as watching video and playing the next generation of graphics-intense mobile games.

These four cores provide up to 2.6 times the performance and up to three times the graphics performance compared to previous generation processors, making the tablet incredibly responsive with life-like and crisp visuals for mobile entertainment and console-quality gaming on-the-go. Acer Iconia Tab A510 preorders start today at $449

For the average consumer, Why would they buy the knock-off with a fraction of the resolution when they can have the real for 10% more?

Don't get me wrong. I hate Apple. But a lower spec copy needs to be half the price to have a chace.

Totally agree, 10" tablets need to have 1080P screens or be dirt cheap to compete now. I think a 7" could still get away with 1280x800, but also at a low low price. It's frustrating that all kinds of companies have announced 1080P tablets but Apple still beat them to the finish line big time.

Currently, the only way that Android based tablets are going to gain any real traction, is by price. That is until the type and quality of applications are at parity with those in the Apple App store. Personally a 10", 16gb Android tablet should be selling at $300. I don't care if it is Tegra 3 at 1920 x 1200 resolution. It has to start at $300. The competition is not the New iPad it is the iPad 2 that is priced at $400. Your competing against the name iPad and your competing with the Apple App store. I believe 7" tablets should start at $200. This should be the price for a full Android based tablet, not an e-reader like the Nook or Fire that has limited Market access. Next Google should decrease the amount they make on each application that is sold in the Market. I think they take 30% now. That should be dropped to at a minimum 20%. This would help persuade new developers. Google should also reward developers of well-designed and well written applications by temporarily decreasing this amount as well. In order for Android to truly succeed in tablet space it must eventually increase the quality and quantity of fast, well designed applications. Only then can they start increasing the price of hardware.

I am personally very interested in this tablet, as I had a pretty positive A500 experience last year. I sold the A500 because I wanted something smaller & lighter and I didn't need the fullsize USB port. The A100 was a joke so I went with an Evo View but now I am thinking a larger tablet for use around the house might be nice.

I like this one for the following reasons:

-32GB of internal storage + microSDHC slot. With HC & ICS mandatory internal app storage, I'd rather have 32Gb over 16Gb internally but leave an expansion card for my media files
-ICS standard
-Tegra3 will be nice for playing several THD-exclusive titles I've bought but can no longer play since I dumped my Droid X2 and my A500.
-Better GPS & wi-fi signal performance than the Asus TF Prime
-CHARGING OVER MICROUSB! This one is HUGE for me. Acer's old AC adapters had short cords and were ungaily wall warts with proprietary connectors (but still not as bad as the Xoom 1 or Toshiba chargers). I like to travel light. I want to carry ONE 2.1A microUSB AC charger and use it on my phone and my tablet.
-Door over the microSD slot to keep your valueable card from being lost or ejected by accident
-While Acer hasn't been as good as Asus about firmware updates, they have at last been pretty reliable thus far. I also expect to see this thing at $399 or below pretty quickly. Ideally, Acer and Asus would drop both of their new tablets by at least $50 immediately to counter the iPad 3 effect.

Would love to do some type of trade up program like my mint condition A500 + $150.00 for this or something. Otherwise I'm very happy and content with m A500 for another year or so :D
