You can now create custom Gamer IDs and set profile pictures in Google Play Games

Often times, gamers are known online by a separate identity, and now that identity can be added to your Google Play Games account. Until now, Play Games just showed your actual name, but thanks to new features, you'll be able to go by your alias when gaming on your phone as well. In addition to the custom names, you'll be able to select from a number of pre-designed avatars to customize your profile a little further.

For new users signing into your first Google Play Games integrated game, and for existing users signing into a new Play Games integrated game, you will create your Gamer ID and select one of 40+ avatars for your Gamer Picture. You can choose to make your game activity public or private, and decide if other gamers will be able to associate your Gamer ID with your email address or name. Gamer IDs are unique, and to claim yours right now you can go to the Google Play Games app.

The new features will be rolling out over the course of the next few weeks, so be patient if you don't see it just yet. Will you be adding your online gaming identity to your Google Play Games profile, or just leaving it as it is? Let us know in the comments.

  • ...and by "now", they mean within the next few weeks.
  • So, can i revoke the permission to some apps which had the google+ access?
Hopefully these apps didnt explicitly ask for G+ access
  • Not fully on topic but related... After I deleted my G+ profile I can no longer rate apps in the Play Store, a G+ account is required.
  • Level 19 only!!??? Posted via the Android Central App
  • How can I disable gamerid and get my Google+ profile back? Posted via the Android Central App
  • How can you set one of your own picture as your profile picture on the Google play game?
  • That's EXACTLY what I want to know
  • i also want to know that
  • Does this feature requires play games update or is it server side? I want it but I don't see it yet
  • I have yet to be prompted to create a Gamer ID. I have checked EVERY DAY since this was announced.
I have opened up the Play Games app to check and opened up a game to see if it will prompt it, making sure that I log out each and every time once i have checked - this will require me to log in to the game once I open it. What EXACTLY does it take to get prompted to create a Gamer ID? Does anybody that has already been able to create one have any insight or information on how to get this to happen?
  • I just linked a game and the page showed up. Try opening the "Google Play Games" app.
  • Thanks for the reply, Popboy11. I've gone to the Play Games App almost everyday and never received a prompt. It even still keeps making my account "hidden", something that I've read happens. I've got the latest update for the App. I've gone so far as to download a random game every now and then to see if it prompts me to create one when signing in. Nothing so far. Is there a minimum level or something that needs to be reached before you can make an ID?
  • HELP!!! I changed the picture to one of the pictures.. how do I change it back to my profile picture?!
  • I need to know this as well Posted via the Android Central App
  • Me too. It's so frustrating. I don't want to use the crappy icons they provide and when creating an id, it doesn't allow you to use spaces so that means I can't make it look normal again. They need to make it so that if people don't want to change it, then they don't have to instead of forcing everyone...
