Jared started off writing about mobile phones back when BlackBerry ruled the market, and Windows Mobile was kinda cool. Now, with a family, mortgage and other responsibilities he has no choice but to look for the best deals, and he's here to share them with you.
  • This just goes to show that even though this phone is basically stock Android, it doesn't get updated any faster than phones with skins on them. Seems like a Nexus device is the way to go if you really want timely updates.
  • I don't know why, but I love the look of this phone. The bottom you can actually hold without hitting all of the capacitive buttons by mistake, and the trackpad is a feature I'd like to have on my phone. If only it had some higher specs. (I use an Atrix).
  • I got a G2 replacement under warranty about 2 weeks ago. It came with Android 2.2 but an update was pushed within a few hours to 2.3.4 already. So I might be running this newest update already.
I am not very impressed. It clearly has a good battery life, but Google Skymap is broken (cannot install latest update, as download has wrong signature) and the phone looses signal very often. It works fine in my home area (where I have 4G) but at work, where I have 2G only even the signal for phone calls drops often. If I reconnect to the network it shows a strong signal again, so it has nothing to do with the signal strength. It is also surprising that it seems to be related to the type of data connection that I get.
  • 2.3.4 for the G2 came out in August. Behind the times much?
  • This is actually a maintenance update to build 2.16.531.5. that was just released. I am currently on 2.3.4/2.15.531.3. This should fix the issue people have been getting with the Google Sky map update failing due to lack of signing as well as the other improvements mentioned.
  • You are correct with that. The problems I report above are with 2.3.4/2.15.531.3 So I am not on this newest built yet. Called TMO last night and they suggested to finally upgrade to a newer SIM (I am still using one that is 7 years old). Unfortunately this did not change my problem with the service dropping on me in a 2G coverage area. I might need another replacement of my G2 :-( Want to report also that TMO customer service was great as always (two minute wait, native English speaking representative, they wanted to help).
