Samsung claims 40 million Galaxy S4s have been sold since launch

Samsung CEO JK Shin has stated that his company has sold a whopping 40 million Galaxy S4's since the device's launch earlier this year. Following up on the report of 20 million sales in just two months since launch, hitting the 40 million mark is nothing to sneeze at in just three more months.

Its predecessor, the Galaxy S3, sold 30 million units in its launch year of 2012, which in itself was an extreme feat compared to a single smart phone from any manufacturer. Naturally Samsung is going to outdo itself, and at this rate the Galaxy S4 will be poised to pass the 50 million mark by the end of the year — especially considering the holiday shopping season ahead.

  • only 40 million? #IphoneSales
  • I don't really count that, they still sell a lot more than any other but people buy those regardless of what they have. Kind of like how CoD sells 30+ million every year. Posted via Android Central App
  • when they say iphone sales it includes iPhone5c iphone 5s iphone 4s and not just iphone 5s.
  • I do like how they do combine all generations of iPhones to compare to one model of Android phone. I know of 3 people who in the last weeks dropped iPhone. Posted via Android Central App
  • Okay, let's just show the sales of the iPhone 5 only. How about over 89,000,000?
Opening weekend of new iPhone: 5s: 6,500,000 5c: 2,500,000 89,000,000 iPhone 5's craps all over the S4 "sales". These "sales" might just be shipped, instead of actually sold, whereas Apple numbers are customer sold units.
  • Ok. Apple is doing better than Samsung. What's new? Considering the fact that mobile isn't even Samsung's primary business, I'd say they're doing pretty well. Posted via Android Central App
  • I guess that is as good a justification as any. I was just responding to the claims that Apple reports total iPhone sales, and doesn't break them down.
  • They generally don't when talking to the public, they didn't at the iPad event. But the article is a bit misleading as the iPhone is pretty undoubtedly the king of sales.
  • Oh ok, sorry. My reply was a little rushed, lol. Let's be honest, here. I don't see any phones touching iPhone sales, for quite some time. Posted via Android Central App
  • Well as of now mobile is becoming primary business for Samsung, As they sold out apparel section. Mobile is generating more profit for Samsung so this is the main business, as this Android king is present in each and every section of electronics world.
  • Source please. Haven't seen these numbers split like that yet.
  • Plus, it is one iPhone model compared to all S4 models (S4, S4 Active, S4 Mini, etc.).
  • Where us the offucual statement from apple they sold 89 m iphone 5? If they sold taht many wouldnt they have trumpeted it now?
  • Like others have said, I can't find verification of those numbers (89,000,000). But even if that's granted as gospel, The iPhone 5 has been out for a full year, the S4 only 6 months. Couple that with the fact that it competes with every other Android phone, including some very compelling offerings from Samsung itself, and 40,000,000 is an incredible achievement.

  • Wut? I thought the iPhone 5 was released like 2 months ago?? Correct me if I'm wrong. (I don't really follow Apple news) If they really sold 89 Million iPhone 5's in those couple months, that is astonishing. Even 89 Million in a year is pretty damn amazing. I still would never consider getting an Apple product, but good for them. As much as I love my Nexus 4, I doubt more than 10 million were sold.
  • You are wrong. The 5s and 5c launched recently. The 5 launched a year ago.
  • Yes Apple successfully sold 9 million iPhone in just 3 days & Nokia shipped 8 million lumia series smartphone in Q3 2013. The vale of the sales in just 3 days is more than the valuation of BlackBerry (4.7 billion). Apple Inc. (AAPL) Sold 9 Million New iPhones in 3 Days: Earns More Than What BlackBerry Was Sold For [REPORT]
  • Apple uses a combination of sold and shipped. They can only keep track of what's sold through the Apple store and they combined that number with phones shipped to outside outlets.
  • They don't count shipped, only sold. They obtain sales numbers from all sales outlets, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint.
  • where is the official report from apple they sold 89 M iphone 5???
  • Dude, no they don't. THEY USE SHIPPED NUMBERS. Lol c'mon man you should know better, Apple is the king of blowing numbers out of proportion, and they do it well. Just take a look at their events lol they love to compare the new models to the really old models "The new A7 processor is 150x faster than our first iPhone" well duhh lol instead of saying "its 3x faster than our A6X processor" why? cause they love to wow the crowd, they love to WOW you ;P
  • It would be interesting to know if there were another companies which would manufacture phones with iOS, who would be the winner. Now there is only Apple. So consider that when consider numbers of sold units. Samsung does it pretty well against iPhones and other Android companies. Could Apple do the same if there were other iOS companies? However, Samsung should also make a plan about their update policy for sold units. Now Samsung has so called premium line known as Note but unfortunately Samsung has made a huge mistake and now Note-serie is imcompatible together. Their newest device, Note 3 has SNote version which makes other, barely year old Note-devices imcompatible with it. A great plan Samsung! Posted via Android Central App
  • When they only sell one new model in a year, of course it will draw in more people, that's to be expected. What are the total sales of 2013 Samsung smartphones(Galaxy S4 and variations), Note 3, Mega, plus all those midrange phones that are sold in other markets? I am not talking about the old models either, but the new ones that came out in 2013. I suspect the numbers dwarf the 89,000,000 number, and by this time next year, sales from Samsung for the 2013 devices will make iPhone 5S and 5C numbers look less impressive. Again, Apple releases one(ok, 2) phones each year, so sales are consolidated into those devices. Samsung releases phones throughout the year, so that spreads out the sales, and makes device launch numbers less impressive, because people have a choice. Smaller devices, larger devices, more and less powerful, etc.

  • "Samsung individually sold 23.4 million phones during the period, which beat the 18.5 million reported for Apple." Dohohohoho.
  • Hehe, Samsung and Android FTW Posted via Android Central App
  • Wow. So nearly 4% of Android devices are Galaxy S4s. Impressive.
  • Plain and simple nothing beats Samsung period. Rather you are rolling with the Galaxy S line or Note line products nobody tops these devices. Now if Htc, Lg, Sony, Motorola, and Google's Nexus line products can sell some handsets android would have a better overall standing. Samsung own over 42% market share of the entire android platform with it's closet competitor Lg at 6 %. That shows you how sad everyone else is on the platform if Lg has 6% and everyone else is below them. Reality is Samsung owns this space. • "Now if Htc, Lg, Sony, Motorola, and Google's Nexus line products can sell some handsets android would have a better overall standing." Yeahhhhh.... Except Android is all of those (and more) AND Samsung. What a delusional fanboy.

  • No, Sammy piggy backed off of, and then leaped with the Galaxy line, the success of the DROIDS.
  • That is correct, Droids opened that popularity gate, Samsung took the keys, closed the gates, and never looked back lol ngl, huge props to Samsung and what they've done with marketing to get android that mindshare. I did not see that coming lol

  • I know when I got my Galaxy S3 around launch time, I literally saw none of them in the wild. I was the only one I'd see. Eventually you started seeing them around, and obviously now, everyone has them. However, when the S4 was released I was seeing them all over right away. I was even able to buy 1 launch day without any problems at all.

  • Just replaced my GalNex with the Note 3. This phone is an unadulterated Beast. My only fear was Touchwiz, mainly due to all the whining around here. I liked the look of Sense better.
After having this phone for a week, I would never trade all the features of Touchwiz for stock Android. I'm loving it. All the extras in Touchwiz are amazing. Yes, some are gimmicky, but most are useful. What you don't like can be turned off.
Nothing, and I mean nothing on the Note 3 is laggy, so that's not an issue.
Samsung could stand to clean up and unify the look throughout the OS. But as far as being non rooted, I am loving the TW experience.
  • I waiting for my new S4 battery to come in. Posted via Android Central App
  • Not bad think the s3 sold 30million in the same period so a 10million gain is not bad at all. My guess that all the talk of s4 doing badly was most likely due to having maybe starting off with a bit too large target.. I think they initially wanted to sell 60 or 70 million by the end of the year which while not impossible it's a tough ask for a single device to do especially when you have dozens of other devices too. • it is a great number for samsung
  • The funny thing with this is that they will never precise either if its one of their model, or all of them together. They have at least 4 variants of it so im curious abt the actual "real" numbers! Posted via Android central app on my Nexus 5
  • Its simple... All S4s, not S3 or S4. Yes, that includes the international and us carrier versions and the active. They are all S4s...
  • I would prefer that they release less variant to compete. Instead of releasing a waterproof variant, an LTE advance variant and a Camera Orienter variant, they should be smart enough to put all of these in only one phone! Posted via Android Central App
  • This I can agree with. Posted via Android Central App
  • Can't agree with this. I don't want a thinker case and rubber buttons. The LTE Advanced would have delayed the release and the camera version has a real optical lens. Are you serious???
  • I personally think the design of the Activ should have the original design, but thats not what i was saying. They could have keep their "ugly" design and embedded the waterproof function, the LTE function and a good camera. U see the lens of the "S4 zoom" is just for marketing. Cuz look at the lens 20 megapixels of the lumia 1520 or the 41 mpx of the 1020! Posted via Android Central App
  • I actually like the way Samsung brought the competition and snubbed Apple. I like that commercials and other media are using S4s instead of iPhones. I'm glad they were able to help pull Android into the majority. I'm a pure Android, Nexus kinda guy, but I do like the S4. My friend has one and I admire its slimness and the big bright screen. I'm ready for the Nexus 5 to at least match that. Posted via Android Central App

  • That's alot of plastic. Plastic doesn't biodegrade, Samsung is polluting this earth.
  • And in the meantime, what are you using...with a battery that doesn't biodegrade and a plastic backing for the internal board and...well...I could go on...
  • Neither does aluminum or glass.
  • Im the meantime HTC fans are voting in every poll to be number one...... Posted via Android Central App
  • The One is far superior phone at least in terms of user experience. If HTC had any sort of marketing budget at all then the rest phone would be a pretty solid competitor. The problem isn't that average Joe doesn't even know who HTC is. At my highschool(top public high school in the California in math and science) we probably have 4 times as many HTC ones as s4s. I'm not suggesting that the One is better for everyone but for people who are technology inclined and know an ounce about the smartphone market the One has a very good reputation and is selling quite well. Posted via Android Central App
  • The thing is that tree average consumer like my girlfriend is bitten by htc with her previous phone and she didn't want an htc any more, 2 brothers both had also an htc before and both of them also didn't want an htc anymore because of there experiences! Now the own a 2 s4 and 1 s3. And the are very happy with it. Posted via Android Central App
  • Not sure if serious. If so, I say we storm the headquarters of Sammy, HTC, Sony, LG, Moto, BB, Nokia, and Apple. All of them make and have made "plastic" phones that are "destroying" our planet. Phones, yes phones, are filling landfills to capacity and will NEVER biodegrade. What ever shall we do? *wrings hands*
  • Apple also report shipped units but call it "sales". No manufacturer can report true end user sales as quickly as Apple claim they can because retailers simply do not report them. Apple's claim of 9 million sales in the first weekend is bogus. Sure they sold 9 million units, but 9 millions phones were not in consumers hands. Posted via Android Central App

  • Samsung never said that the analysts did and media started spreading it
  • It's all about expectation. Samsung missed their own [ridiculous] estimate.
  • Many valid points and some well not so-But lets just get one thing streight Samsung produce quality products from kitchen stuffs, t.v, washing machines, camera's ect ect and the Smartphone was really kicked off with the S3 and Note 2 and dare anybody argue that both were and still are quality smarties, So now to the S4 and 40 million units sold and evwn if that is just to retailers at this specific point in time it wont be long until that is transfered into actual sales, oh and just another point where did apple source their A7 chip? Answer=Samsung, so maybe Samsung could in theory steal the statistics from Apples sales also, I am a Samsung Fan and Android, many reasons-One being i enjoy open source software and that is great for developers, and two Samsung provide options, eg removable battery, some may say bloatware i enjoy having the option yes im no fitness fanatic so S Health may be of no use, however times change and that may bacome handy, same with the likes of eye scroll i dont use it but nice to know its their, thats inventive. So to round up Well Done Samsung and im happy to have owned the S4 and now to be the very happy owner of the Note 3, Apple loyalists i aint taking anything away from them i am open minded and in some ways they do have an edge its just not a leading edge anymore you can thank Tim Cook for that, ok Steve Jobs has sadly passed but to get ousted from his own company was a bad move-he nust new what stable was, what inovation was and Apple are making a mistake in not adopting Steves mindset and outlook but then again by the time they ousted him they stopped listening, A company lost and that is showing, The established name is what is keeping Apple up in the high end of things not inovation that died when Steve Jobs did. • I own both the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4. They are both really great devices, so yes Samsung deserves this success. They are working hard to bring this to us and yes as owners of their top dogs we do get to wish they focussed on few devices but that's not their strategy it's our wishes. I also owned the Note 2 and wow what a devices that is, I've seen the Note 3 and it's lovely in fact that screen is down right amazing. For those fighting for the HTC One just know it's not technically superior, it's just made of metal and is really beautiful. Stop hating and be happy Android is really getting these amazing devices so that we don't have to look at the iPhone for inspiration. By the way LG has just posted some really great results, the future looks good for consumer choice. And let's all not forget that when Apple wants the highest quality components, they know who to go to: Samsung and LG runs a close 2nd. Posted via Android Central App
  • It's not a rosy picture for samsung though, the S4 is selling slower then the S3 did. I would not call it a win for samsung, if this were apple there would be headline news that "apple is doomed." Apple stock would be tanking as we speak but it's not apple so all is well.
  • s3 reached 40 M january 2013, nuff said
  • That's a lot of cheap plastic and blue tinted screens.
  • So, because you dislike Samsung, you're implying their handsets don't work for anyone? Keep up the good work. Posted via Android Central App

  • I have to say that the Galaxy S4 is awesome I have it and its no surprise that it has sold more than the 3 but Samsung has to make the next Galaxy better because this was just an incremental upgrade over the S3 and it does make others not want to upgrade, I get customers telling me this all the time at my job.
