So you're buying a Galaxy S5, but what device are you coming from?

The latest from Samsung has a lot to offer, so what device are you dropping to pick one up?
The Galaxy S5 is announced and its details are known, and aside from actually getting your hands on one to test out many of the tech-savvy among us already have a good idea of whether or not it'll be our next device. Even just a week out from its official unveiling, we've heard from a whole heap of people who have made up their mind that the Galaxy S5 will be in their pocket as soon as they can hand someone money in exchange for the phone.
So you've decided to buy a Galaxy S5. The real question is, what device are you leaving behind for the new hotness? The discussion has already kicked off in our Samsung Galaxy S5 Forums, but if you have a response you can always drop that in the comments here as well. And of course if you haven't seen our in-depth coverage of the Galaxy S5 just yet, you can read that below.

I'm coming from a Nexus 4 so this is a big upgrade for me. Better screen and Much Much Better Camera. Also some of the S features look cool and I love the Blue model. Posted via Android Central App

I just went from the Nexus 4 to the LG G2. I am sure you will be happy. Who knows maybe down the road I will pick up a S5. But I see the LG G2 suiting my needs for some time to come. Dat battery. -
Same here. G2 was a pretty substantial upgrade from my N4
-
The G2 has a very attractive price at the minute it's tempting, but I've had my LG device now for 15 months so looking forward to a complete different experience. Not looking forward to the price of the S5 though :-( Posted via Android Central App
-
Well if you are coming from a Nexus LG device to a LG device with LG UI, trust me it is a completely different experience. But if you are willing to spend the money and have waited this long go for the S5 :D
-
If you're on a contract, I'd go for the G2. I've seen it on sale for as low as a penny. Posted from my "Gift from God" Note 3, my "God-Given" iPad Mini 2, or my "Risen" Samsung Chromebook.

I'm sticking with my nexus 4 at least until project ara is on sale depending on if it's good or not. Nexus 4 does everything I need and more, and easy ROM access is good (but I'm sticking with stock on ara- if it's even released next year) Posted via Android Central App on Paranoid Android 4.4 Beta 5

I'm with you. The ONLY Samsung product I'm buying is the Chromebook. I love my N4.
-
Ditto
-
And when will that be? I don't think we'll get project ara this year and I'm not even sure if it will be fir for mass production in 2015..
-
Agreed, I'm thinking late 2015 at the earliest. That's still some wishful thinking.
-
Lol I have a n4 but unfortunately I won't be upgrading! Posted via Android Central App

Nexus 4 is a great phone. S5 is lots of bloatware, m not sure its a worthy upgrade. 720p displays are under-rated
-
if you coming from 1080p devices then you will see pixels all over otherwise you will not even notice. I'm using HTC ONE from time it came out but recently I went out to try other devises and tried MOTO G which is pretty good phone, and display but when I'm surfing I see pixels especially on white colors.

Galaxy S4?

Galaxy S3. Contract has me waiting until July, so I'll see what pops up between now and then, but right now it's looking like the S5. Posted via Android Central App

Also coming from GS3.

Same here. The S3 is a hard phone to put down though. Its been a solid performer with zero hardware issues. Hopefully whatever I replace it with won't disappoint.

Same here... Once this is up im on the hunt again.. Although.. as great as the S5 is im hoping that if the Premium version happens it does so before fall..

Nexus 5 technically. I have another line with a Nexus 5 I can use to cure my need for AOSP as well as this for the features that the Nexus is lacking such as external SD, superior camera, and removable battery. So I'm trading in one of my 2 Nexus 5s.

I'll probably NEVER own a Samsung product in my life.
I had the S2. it was alright. -
The S2 wasn't good at all. It didn't start to get good till the S3+. Don't base your opinion on anything older then S3.
-
No the s2 was great for the time in was the s1 vibrant and captivate that sucked they had brutal battery life and non functioning Gps problems and poor call quality it was the s2 that started the Samsung rise and really was one of the first phones to challenge the iPhone. Posted via Android Central App
-
Yeah, the S2 sold around 10 million units (I believe?). Which, for the time, was a pretty sizable amount, considering that Apple still dominated the mobile landscape. Posted from my "Gift from God" Note 3, my "God-Given" iPad Mini 2, or my "Risen" Samsung Chromebook.
-
Ugh, agreed. I had the Captivate for a few days before returning it and going back to my Nexus One. The Captivate was nice-looking and really snappy, but the GPS was a nightmare and the AMOLED screens of that generation were just useless outside. The S2 was a step in the right direction, but the S3 was the game changer.
-
I still had some GPS issues on the SGS2. It wasn't till the SGS3 where all carriers had the same hardware in the US. I think that is what started to make it a better phone.
-
I agree, I loved my s2, was still going strong when I upgraded to the s4 and sold it on Posted from my 2013 nexus 7, yeah baby!
-
Are you kidding? The S2 was a great phone. Still have mine as a backup.
-
Okay, I have an S3 and will probably never buy another Samsung phone. Posted via Samsung GS3 Wishing It Was A N5
-
I liked my S2 well enough that I bought a second one. I followed them up with the S3.
-
The S2's (in my experience) were *very* hit or miss. I had a couple of friends (they're married) who both got a Galaxy S2 at the same time. His was great. Her's was a steaming pile of you-know-what that had such problems as wildly inaccurate GPS, wouldn't ring most of the time, random lockup/reboot, poor touch sensitivity, etc. Like I said, these were both purchased at the exact same time, so it seems like Samsung had some serious quality control issues back in those days. Thankfully, they seemed to have gotten that sorted out by the time they released the S3.
-
Really ? The s2 was great at its time of launch, it was well designed and better tan all the single core phones on the market. After the s2 Samsung devices get flakey and for sheep's who are happy to have tonnes of bloatware and pointless "S" softwares. I had an s2 and when the s3 landed I went to HTC one even that was poor so I went back to the nexus line and have never looked back ( apart from my free lg g2 from upgrading my contract to 4g) Posted via Android Central App

Why giving up the nexus 5 so quickly? Posted via Android Central App
-
Nexus 5 is great phone, But Its interface is too much simple and default dialler sucks, can't rearrange menu items and when using USSD code that's annoying too, I love HTC ONE. clean and awesome interface.
-
While I like my nexus 5 there a few things I can't take and miss from galaxy devices 1. Light bleeding. I've never dropped my phone or anything but I see light bleed from top left corner. It drives me crazy at night when it's more apparent. 2. I miss AMOLED Display. Don't get me wrong. I like LCD On N5 but AMOLEDs are special. 3. N5 doesn't have a physical home key and I need it. Lol Posted via Android Central App
-
Wow great reasoning. Its nice to see that after all the eff this eff that bullshit. Sorry to hear you have light bleed. I for one haven't had that issue. The only problem I would have with switching to a galaxy device is if there is any bit of lag or stutters with simple things like scrolling, I'd notice it and wouldn't stand it. Not because I'm a super picky mofo but because the nexus 5 is so damn lag free that I've been spoiled by it. When I use my nexus 7 or moto x I notice every bit of stutters there are. And those are solid devices. And from my experiences with Samsung devices, its never really been too great in that aspect. Posted via Android Central App

The "S" series is no longer Samsung's "top of the line" phone. They seem to be letting the Note series tow the line for "spec beast" while trying to keep the "S" more mainstream.

I'm personally not happy in the direction that BlackBerry is going. In my opinion they will eventually be a software and enterprise company. With a 3% market share in handsets I don't see how they could possibly survive in the handset business. I may be wrong but its time for a change as I have been a BlackBerry user for 7 years.

Honestly, unless you're dying to upgrade right this minute, or you just want a smaller phone than the Note 2, I'd recommend waiting till the Note 4 gets announced around August/September. Samsung seems to be pushing the Note series as their super-high-end devices now.
-
I'm on an S3 right now. My contract doesn't end until October 2014. I really don't have any issues with my S3 and look forward to the kitkat upgrade. We'll see if I jump up to the S5 in October.

Moto X - while I love my X, and I am heistant ot go away form vanilla android(or close to it), the screen size, and toys the galaxy s5 provide is worth it. I also got only a 16gb model of the X, if I had gotten a 32, I would keep it longer. but i'm running out of storage faster than i thought, so 32gb on board, and an SD card slot... sounds good to me.

My only problem with the S5 on AT&T will be the locked boot loader. Other than that my upgrade is due 11 April from the S II Skyrocket which has been and still is a very good phone.

Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX It has served me well for two years, but it's really starting to get sluggish. I am seriously considering the Galaxy S5 as its replacement. I still have grandfathered unlimited data. So I plan on buying the phone at full, off contract price. That way I can keep my unlimited data plan. I only hope the price is reasonable for the S5. Posted via Android Central App

It won't be reasonable. You're looking at about 650-750 give or take

I'm hoping it will drop to sub-$700, compared to the current pre-order prices being around $900. I'd be willing to pay $700 for a newly released flagship device. Posted via Android Central App

I can't believe the pre-order is $900. That is rediculous, I would never spend that much on a phone, especially when you can get a N5 for $400. Posted via Samsung GS3 Wishing It Was A N5
-
They are on Verizon, so no N5.
-
Rather than perpetuate & promoting a company's inertia, stagnation by blindly buying their products, why don't people open their minds to other OEM's? The 6 month old LG G2 still more than stands up to this lazy 5th iteration of the Galaxy line, is a lot cheaper, has a bigger battery & a better screen in a smaller footprint. I really just don't see a compelling argument for buying the S5 as there are other manufacturers being a lot more innovative & doing a better job, because their budgets are going where they should go...On improving products, not just blanket marketing...
-
I think you are the one thats blind.
Blindly hating on a company for no apparent reason. Why do so many people seem to take tech products personally? No innovation? Thats a joke. I am open to others, but still not WoWed by anything.
They ALL have issues. But just because some people like certain products you do not, that does not make them idiots. Glad you like the G2, hope it continues to do well for you buddy Posted via Android Central App -
Thank you.

I'll be coming from the S4, looking forward to the duel connectivity...

I'm currently using an S3 and I'm NOT getting the S5 instead I will be getting the note 3. Note 4 is going to be the same incremental update as the S5 pretty much and I'm sure note 3 is more than capable at being a good phone
-
It sure is nice to see comments about the S5 where people aren't talking a bunch of crap, and making stupid comments. I don't use, or acknowledge the word ""troll"".
-
If it has a locked bootloader I won't be coming from anything at all. I'll keep my S2

Wife and I are now both rolling LG G2 devices on Verizon. The battery life is freaking nuts, being able to go 2 days with heavy usage is insane. Wife is coming from the excellent but smaller battery S3 and I'm going from the cruft laden\smaller battery S4. Honestly as good as the experience has been on these devices I find it hard believe will be using Samsung devices in the near future. Hell I might even pick up a LG G Pro 8.3.
-
I'm coming from a Samsung G-Nex, and I can't wait! Don't get me wrong, the G-Nex is still a great phone, but man, is it old! It's like 53 in phone years! I am making the move because I love Samsung devices (hate HTC!) and I want a great camera!
-
When I came to HTC many said not to buy this, but I would say best thing happened to me is HTC(about smartphones) and I started from HTC ONE X and then HTC ONE and every time I hold HTC ONE I just have a distinct feel. Don't hate without trying the new one.

Coming from the S4 - but still keeping Note 3 as 2nd phone. Thats my pattern now: New galaxy in spring - new Note in fall. Always one Galaxy and one Note on me.

My wife wants an S5. She is coming from an iPhone 5. She wants to switch mainly because of the file management option my wife needs for her bakery business. The ability to download/upload files has drawn her attention. She wants to go Samsung because she sees me with my Note 3 but not fully comfortable with a large screen.
-
I am constantly shocked at the fact that iOS *still* just straight up says "no" to downloading certain types of files. The treasurer of a charity group I was working with asked me how to download a zip file on her iPhone that contained a bunch of IRS legal docs. After I discovered that iOS would not let her download a zip file, I had to try and explain to her "why". It seems like Apple would have come up with *some* method for getting around this sort of thing by now.
-
That is because Apple already knows what is best for everyone, so you shouldn't need to do anything more with your phone. /s Seriously though, you should tell her to look into jailbreaking it. I am pretty sure there are zip tools in Cydia, and I know file managers are available because I used them years ago.
-
I think she is over jail breaking to get this feature and others. She wants it out of the box and looking to try something new.
-
when it comes to the android/iphone debate I'm pro-android all the way. just tell her the screen size is something she'll get used to after awhile. Posted via Android Central App
-
Then tell her to get the GS5 if she doesn't want the note 3 it's probably the best Android for business use in terms of file handling and syncing out the box. Without having to add apps .. that or an LG G2 ... I love my HTC one but thank God for 3rd party apps because the native file management app isn't easy-to-use and reliable... On this phone as it was on my note 2 .

First of all, I'll have a look at the Xperia Z2, and probably even the new HTC One. Though, the Z2 is almost certainly written off for me. I mean, people complain about TouchWiz, but the Sony UI still looks as horrible and featureless as it did when they were "helped" in that partnership with Ericsson. All in all, I guess I can survive with my GS4 until the summer, just to see what Samsung will be unpacking later on.... The main reason for an upgrade now would be to avoid the big price-drop of my GS4 within a few weeks when the GS5 is the new big seller.

Oh gosh it seems like some of you change phones more often than some people change underwear. ;-) You know just because there is a new phone out every 6 months or so you don't have to buy it. If you have a recent phone from last year like the note 3 or s4 or the LG G2. The upgrade will be disappointing. The only reason I can see that someone would upgrade is for the waterproof feature. Your worried that you might drop your phone in the toilet while reading ac ;-) Of course If you come from a s3 or a N4 it might be worth it. But only if you need all the features. If you want a basic phone that suit most of your needs buy a moto g. It's a great phone that does 90% of the things that a flagship does. Posted via Android Central App

"Is hating on the GS5 the new iPhone hating" (or whatever it said)
If you have no intentions on getting why spend time posting on it .... Hater! Posted from my HTC one (so don't give me any Samsung fan boy ish)

I'm still up in the air because I love my HTC one and I think the new HTC one with expandable memory gives me what I need However the privacy mode, the camera reviews, and Samsung fit are reasons for me wanting to go back to Samsung.. also I had a better experience with syncing and streaming on my Samsung devices... But sense is way more Grown Man than touchwiz... So again it's a dog fight between the 2 Posted via Android Central App

Have a Note 3 and it's better in every way than the S5, so no I'll wait for the Note 4. 5th

I've had my S3 for over a year and what I now know as bloatware has been a real pain. I tried the S4 and even though you can tell the hardware is much better, the bloat was still there and the phone felt like it had a speed limiter on it. This has put me off the GS series completely, so I ordered a Nexus 5 for that free and fast Android feel, even with the limited camera and no sd capability, I just need to get stuff down without being bloated!

Everyone should just wait for the the new HTC one to come out I had the s4 n switched to the HTC way better phone then the s4 and I'm sure the new HTC one will be better then the s5. Just giving an honest opinion.

Coming from s4 and z30. Looking to switch from s4 to note 3. S5 did not impress me Posted via Android Central App

Using a HTC One at the moment, and I love it, but had S4 before, and in the HTC it feels like something is missing all the time, maybe it's just me, but I think the S5 will be my next phone, but as people say, it's a heavy price tag compared to the G2 that I also thought of, but that also lack memory card slot and removable battery, waterproof is just a luxury that I don't really need. Maybe S4+ will suit my needs. Posted via HTC One Google Play Edition

I wanted to get an S5,I have a note 2 on T-Mobile. But I wasn't sold, so I'm gonna use the note 2 which is still a powerful piece of hardware. I have yet to root it but that week change when I get a replacement phone. I'm pretty new to rooting still, and am confident I can do it, but there's still that chance I can brickit, I think I can wait till I find something I must have

I don't plan on downgrading from my note 3 Posted via Android Central App

Um S5 has the same processor, more pixels, better camera, water and dust resistant, same battery life (better optimization on the S5) , updated touchwiz, finger scanner, and u call that a downgrade? Look I'm sure u love your phone selection but don't allow yourself to come off as obvious hater ... Just be happy with your note 3 ... New phones will come out don't be the clown that ranks the phone he has as the best just because u own it... Better for u.... Agreed... It's far from a downgrade

I'm up for an upgrade but was not really impressed but I like it if that makes sense. I will look at the HTC this time but I really love my G2 currently and want to know what they have to offer

Had 2 S4s, tried an HTC (loved it till it was nicked) and had an note II, but stock ROMs are so bad with all the bloat. Had a moto G till I could get nexus 5 and both were/are a joy. I think after using these I don't feel tempted to get an S5. Only thing drawing it to me is expandable memory but to me looks like the S4 with a few minor bells and whistles attached. Can upgrade in June but think I will stick with Nexus and get price of contract down. Posted via Android Central App

HTC One but I'm crazy excited for the Note 4 to come out later this year Posted via Android Central App

I'll be coming from an S4 Active. I love the build, as in the physical buttons and the IP67 rating but don't like lack of support for this stepchild phone. The spec bumps look nice and I'm really looking forward to the MIMO capabilities. HOWEVER, I'll also be eyeing the Z2 and M8 as the weeks come. Posted via Android Central App

I'm debating whether or not to trade in my iPhone 5S for the Galaxy S5.
