BlackBerry's Venice slider to be released as the BlackBerry Priv

Ever since the device was teased at Mobile World Congress, the upcoming Android-powered BlackBerry slider has been known by its internal codename Venice but a new post from @evleaks may have revealed the go-to-market name for the device. According to @evelaks, when BlackBerry decides to announce the slider officially, it will arrive as the BlackBerry Priv.

BlackBerry Priv

While the name might sound awkward at first, it certainly falls in line with BlackBerry's security and privacy history, though it's certainly an interesting choice. One that falls in line with some of BlackBerry CEO John Chen's recent comments at the Waterloo Innovation Summit. If it does indeed launch as the BlackBerry Priv, what do you all think of the name? There's still plenty of time to change it.

  • I liked the name Venice. Definitely better than Priv. I'm assuming that will be pronounced with a long I. Unless it's the British pronunciation of privacy, then it'd be a short I. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Blackberry Perv Posted via the Android Central App
  • There's a theory in the crackberry community that this name was just a ploy to figure out who is leaking all the info to the media. Posted via the Android Central App
  • What in the hell? Posted from my Nexus 6/Nexus 7 2013/Surface Pro 3
  • It's Blackberry, they had to mess something up lol. Device looks decent so it had to be the name. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Absolutely horrid name.
  • +1 Posted via the Android Central App
  • Better than LG Vu Posted via the Android Central App
  • Haha sorry I gotta disagree with you there
  • That's a cool name to me. Vu = A unique view is what I get from that name. Priv... = private? Really... Posted via the Android Central App
  • Short for Porta Privy? Posted via the Android Central App
  • As long the price match with the spec we don't really concern what it will be called. Posted via the Android Central App
  • My goodness what a ridiculous name imo. . . Makes me think of a privvy Posted via Android Central App
  • I much prefer Venice or something else other than Priv. That can't be a serious name can it?
  • Much prefer the Venice... but whatever, it's hopefully my next phone! Posted via the Android Central App
  • I also like the name Venice better Posted via the Android Central App
  • Me 2 Posted via the Android Central App
  • Yep Venice sounds so much better
  • This might be one of the most anticipated Android phone. I never owned a BlackBerry but this looks very intriguing Posted via the Android Central App
  • I agree, this is one of the most hyped phones out there, almost. We'll see. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Not as much hype as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. But close, damn close. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I usually don't care how devices are named, but this is pretty lame. Venice sounds hot. Priv, not so much.
  • totally agree ... I thought Venice was actually one of the better names we've heard in awhile. makes me think of that scene from Wolf of Wall St
  • Thoroughly dislike the name Priv. Sounds silly and not fun to say. Seems crazy but really a successful product typically has a good name to go with it. Should flow and be fun & easy to say. Agreed that Blackberry Venice sounds good and classy. Just like Pearl, Curve, Bold, etc., did. I really don't understand why companies spend so much time and effort only to come up with strange/poor/confusing-to-pronounce names in the end.
  • +1
  • Now we know why blackberry is having such a hard time. It's obviously the marketing department, lol. They need to go. "Priv"... What the heck is that? Venice had so much class Posted via the Android Central App
  • All this time I was under the impression that the codename "Venice" was going to be the name. It fit. Oh well... The Priv Sucks.... As a name, that is. My mom is still looking at it to replace her (gulp) BlackBerry Storm. Posted From my Verizon Galaxy Note Edge via the Android Central App... And Don't Eat The Yellow Snow!
  • Amazing... She was still using that? Posted via the Android Central App
  • Guys its not like they can call it the Blackberry curve, Honestly I hope they didn't "Torch" (see what I did there) this phone with a horrid name...name it something cooler like BlackBerry Focus as in the camera will be good, or with this phone I can't seem to focus on anything else idk... Posted via Android Central App
  • Blackberry Blend
  • Is already a blackberry product They should have done a play on the torch name.. like the blackberry blaze Posted via the Android Central App
  • What a pathetic name.
The Venice was a fantastic name
Why BB why. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Cause they like shooting themselves in the foot . A real catchy name is what would help this phone get notice . Now I'm afraid it'll die on the shelf next to the classic and that other thing Posted via the Android Central App
  • Would have preferred the BlackBerry Slide, ir Blade. But Priv? I don't know? Hopefully it's some joke to fool the leakers lol Posted via the Android Central App
  • This phone looks awesome Posted via the Android Central App
  • Why not the blackberry nobody cares. I've been abandoned enough by them to never go back. Priv, is that an abbreviation for an outhouse? Posted via Android Central App
  • The fans over at Crackberry are furious at this name. This company always makes me scratch my head SMH. What a horrible name for a smartphone! Posted via the Android Central App
  • It's a fascinating company in the way they have something great and still manage to screw it up.
  • Perv... Posted via the Android Central App
  • Priv- privee Posted via the Android Central App
  •  privy member Posted via the Android Central App
  • Terrible name! Keep Venice. Or Slide / Slider. Or Pop (as in pop the screen up). Or Blandroid. Broid? Anything but Priv! Posted via the Android Central App
  • Anberry? N6/9

  • Not sure about the name, maybe it will grow on me...? I went from using a z10 to a nexus 5 when my BB died. Now I'll have the best of both worlds! I'm looking forward to this device. This or the nexus 5x are in the running. Posted via the Android Central App
  • A product name that has ambiguous pronunciation? Is it a short "i" or long "i?" They should take a page from Dupont - don't ever release a product where there is confusion over how to pronounce the name of that product! (although "Dacron" kind of broke their own rule)
  • Doesn't seem to effect Xaomi...
  • That sounds cool Posted via the Android Central App
  • Xoami - the only way I can think of to pronounce that is "zay OH mee." Is that correct? If not, then it affects at least one person :)
  • To me doesnt matter.just release it so i can buy it Posted via the Android Central App
  • Priv sounds like something those Disney Channel teen programs would come up with
  • Lol Posted via the Android Central App
  • Venice all I see is Vice lol Posted via the Android Central App
  • That would also be cool Posted via the Android Central App
  • Well guys we know what to do now, tweet BlackBerry violently to get them to keep the Venice name. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I second this, except BlackBerry isn't up to twitter yet, theyre still only up to 2006 or something- at least in marketing, it seems Posted via the Android Central App
  • To MySpace then! Posted via the Android Central App
  • Venice was a decent name. Priv sounds like the name of a toilet. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Excuse my french fuck that name I have had every BlackBerry until the classic and passport this is terrible I used to love BlackBerry this is just an all around terrible name and phone they need to make a premium no complaint phone the bold 9930 was the end of their line they never brought their A game I don't get why companies cheap or and expect to sell hard numbers when they put our cheap feeling phones Samsung is the only company to successfully get away with it BlackBerry used to be classy any phone coming out for 2016 needs to be packed with premiumness lol unless this will be 299-349 it's pure shit Posted via the Android Central App
  • How is this not a premium device. Specs and materials are in line or better than competing premium devices Posted via the Android Central App
  • U mad bro? Punctuation may help. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Oh my God. If you're expecting someone to read that, use commas, periods, colons and semicolons. If not, then why even type it? Posted via the Android Central App powered by Droid Turbo
  • The blackberry Venice privy. The motto: their pee goes into their streets, our PR went to . I think it works. Posted via the Android Central App
  • BlackBerry Perv. Slides in. Slides out.
  • Oh, blackberry... You just couldn't avoid screwing up, could you? What the hell is a priv? The Venice sounded classy, then we got this. They just took a large dump on the phone; completely defiling it. Ugly name. Sometimes I wonder if people in the marketing department of these companies have any common sense. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Based on the slide out keyboard, I'd call it a Palm Pre. Posted via the Android Central App
  • And yet it seems BlackBerry learned nothing about the demise of Palm... N6/9
Posted via the Android Central App
  • The demise of Palm had nothing to do with the form factor of the device and everything to do with an anorexic app selection and a crazy German man named Léo. Posted via the Android Central App powered by Droid Turbo
  • I have a Q10, it's not easy to find a smart phone with key board, Blackberry keep doing!
  • Priv for privacy... Or Priv for Privileged? Either way, it's going to sound awful in a TV ad, or said by in store sales people. I agree with everyone else, Venice was a much better name. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Hadn't thought of it standing for priveledged .. could just be it Either way.. terrible terrible name Posted via the Android Central App
  • Everyone: instead of complaining in here where not many see, complain directly to blackberry. Email them, tweet @ them, Facebook them, etc.. We can make the changes we see fit. I always contact companies direct. Sometimes something comes out if, sometimes not. But if enough if us do, you get results. I was one of the people that helped bring back the month view on Google calendar. I complained many times to them and they actually responded that they updated it based on feedback. So it does work. Let's get on it people. Let's help drive/guide these industries! #bbvenice
  • Awesome Posted via the Samsung Note 4
  • I still want one. Too bad I'm stuck on contract for at least another 9 months Posted via the Samsung Note 4
  • Better to wait.. BlackBerry has the tendency to release their device in one colour (black) and then release in additional colours in six months to try and keep sales strong. Better to wait for the stylish ones. Posted via the Android Central App
  • That's something to consider. Also will they keep it updated? If they keep it updated then it will definitely be worth the wait Posted via the Samsung Note 4
  • I don't know why but I want one tp play around with.
  • Me dont care bout d name. Me care only d price, specs, specially d battery capacity. Phone looks cool! Posted via the Android Central App
  • Translation, D = the Posted via the Android Central App
  • I always thought "the D" meant something else... Posted via the Android Central App powered by Droid Turbo
  • What marketing genius had this idea? Sounds and looks to much like Perv (short for pervert) Posted via the Android Central App
  • This name is unbelievably lame.
  • Haters can hate but this is one bad ass device! Posted via the MATERIAL AC App
  • i prefered venice but a different name isnt going to stop me buying it
  • Venice was an internal code name. Never would have been the name for the consumer market. They always named the devices after cities internally. Hoping for:
    1. The Hub
    2. Hardware Volume keys plus pause button in between
    3. BlackBerry 10 style virtual keyboard with swipe back delete
    4. Hopefully a proper night/sleep mode like BB10 has
    5. Radio connectivity consistent with every other BlackBerry device. Posted via the Android Central App
