Transit

Real-time routing available in 43 major cities across the United States

Transit App has gotten quite a reputation with the iOS folks. Now, the Google Maps alternative for public transportation is also available for Android. The app works in 43 major cities including New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington DC, and Philadelphia.

It offers real-time public transit schedules, a multi-modal trip planner showing the four fastest ways to your destination, saves frequently used routes as favorites, and promises always up-to-date data.

Of course, this is a new release, and there are still some kinks to work out. I could only get "out of range" errors when trying to navigate around town in Boston using my Nexus 4, despite it being listed as an officially supported city. My route from JFK to John's Pizza on Bleaker St. worked great, though. Check it out for yourself with the Play Store link up top.

Wish it listed cities in alphabetical order. Had to read through them all only to find out my city was not one of them. I know, what a pain eh? Hope they add more cities. I'm sure my city is in top 20 in the U.S.

if you download and run the app, it will automatically add your region to the request list.

Who knows how long that will take, but you never know.

Where is the Vegas love? one of the most visited cities in our beautiful country.
and before someone says its not a major city. Clark county has over 2 million people.

Clark County is in the bottom 5 for population density in the top 100 most populous counties in the US though.

Thanks... I was looking for Calgary. I didn't download this yet since I thought this is for US only. I am going to download it now.

"Of course, this is a new release, and there are still some kinks to work out." Yeah, you could say that. Completely unusable on my N4, can't find my location and trying to route between two addresses doesn't work either. Also crashes every time I try to access settings. Looks promising though so I'll keep it around in hopes that they update it soon.

We have an update 1.0.1 that should resolve most of your issue. If it doesn't please contact us at info at thetransitapp.com and we sure will look into it.

How does this compare to Google Maps transit routeing?

I've used Maps in a few cities while traveling and found it pretty accurate and saves me having to learn to read each city's obtuse train/bus schedule.

My niece is the queen of mass transit in NYC and knows every shortcut in the book, without ever looking up anything.

Transit lets you quickly find departure times for routes around you, whereas Google Maps is mainly a trip planner. When you're going somewhere new, a trip planner is great, but for the rest of the time it's in our opinion nothing short of overkill.

Just asked my GF to download it on her iPhone so I could test it; it looks excellent!! Added it to my wishlist and will definitely install it on my N7 and N5 when I get them!

I can't find a way to see where the bus is currently located (GPS updated every few seconds), but this is possible on other apps. Other than that, it looks pretty good.

Real-time vehicle locations didn't make it into 1.0 unfortunately. It's already available on the iPhone version, and we'll try to add it to Android within the next few weeks.
