Xperia X10 Gingerbread

No, we're not talking about a custom ROM, and no, it's not April 1st yet, either. After announcing that the Xperia X10 would receive no updates beyond Eclair  just a couple of months ago, Sony Ericsson has turned on its heel and now promises X10 owners a boost straight to Android 2.3.3 in late Q2 or early Q3.

Sony Ericsson's Rikard Skogberg says SE has "listened to its consumers," and as a result of developing the Gingerbread-toting Xperia Arc, Neo and Play, it's been able to bring the X10 up to speed through a special development project. Apparently the update will add some features from the 2011 Xperia phones to the X10, though some earlier functionality will be lost in the process. Because of this, the Gingerbread update will not be delivered over-the-air, but via a PC update utility. See the source link for more on that.

Sony Ericsson has acknowledged that it's had a poor track record as far as Android updates go and promised to do better in the future. We're sure X10 owners will be delighted to see these words turn into action, making the X10 the only Android 1.x phone to get an official Gingerbread update. [Sony Ericsson Product Blog]

Good job SE if this gets done. Nice to see a company listening to their customers and trying to make amends.

Good to see a company listen to it's consumers. The Arc is looking nice I may have to give them a chance. I wonder how SE feels about hacking phones? Lmao.

I remember reading that just think it's funny that Sony is pursuing Gehot. But in another division saying hey it's ok if we do it right. Which is ok by me.

That's pretty damn amazing, I have to admit. Makes Sony Ericsson phones look a whole lot more interesting all of a sudden... Until you remember that they locked the Bootloader of the X10 with a signature that still hasn't been fully cracked and just shake your head.

As a Samsung owner i have great respect for SE and their abiltiy to stay with their customers instead of throwing them to the wayside. When(If) this gets done, it will definatly show that they mean business to the other big companies i.e. Motorola, Samsung, HTC, and that they are willing to stay true to their word.

This makes me have a lot of respect for SE. How many companies will really say "Look, we messed up, and we're sorry." Answer: quite a few! But how many actually DO something about it? Very few. Assuming this really happens, I give SE a big pat on the back, and I will consider them for my next phone.

Much respect to Sony Ericsson , the Xperia X10 is a cool phone , never owned one though
beside the Incredible S & the X10 , these are the only two who will get GingerBread officially

Wow, I upgraded and switched to Verizon after I heard that they discontinued the updates for it, well at-least I still can mess around with gingerbread since I still have the phone.

I must admit, I'm completely shocked by this. Seems like X10 owners are going to get official Gingerbread before us EVO owners. Wow.

Granted, I've been running Gingerbread for months now, but still...pretty shocking. Nice job SE.

I was one of the first who purchased the x10 with high hopes. The phone has always been pretty stable and awesome hardware. Hearing it was left to die with 2.1 was disappointing, but knowing this phone will get 2.3.3 before 95% of all US carrier based phones makes me lolz at everyone else who discounted the x10.

I'll be having a cold one tonight for SE.

It will be interesting to see how HTC and Moto respond to this as SE will really start to take market share this year in the US from those two with Xperia Play and other android phones coming to the US.

Psst...hey Samsung...this is how you take care of your customers. Notice how people are starting to reconsider SE? Take a hint...or just just stop wasting everyone's time.
