Android Quick App: Aces Traffic Pack

0

If you are like me, and are easily amused, Aces Traffic Pack is a game that is bound to keep you busy for hours on end. After spending just two minutes with this game I instantly knew I was going to be hooked, and was very thankful that the game came with over 400 different puzzles to play through. The graphics instantly caught my attention, the vibrant colors used on the game brought it to the next level and set it apart from many other puzzle-style games.

More after the break.

Android 2.x on 83% of all phones

18

The latest data from the Android Market is in, and according to what has been collected Android version 2.0 or higher is on 83 percent of all phones.  In even better news, Android 2.2 (Froyo) is now on over 43 percent of all phones, up 10 percent since October.  Legacy versions (Android 1.5 and 1.6) are still on a steady decline, and we hope to see them disappear soon for all but the hardcore users and developers.

Of course, we're looking forward to seeing Gingerbread added to the big green pie chart soon, and hope the trends continue.  [Android Developer]

Samsung Continuum review

18

A dual-screen 'Ticker' brings a new look to Verizon

We've been talking about the Samsung Continuum for a while now.  We were able to get a hands-on with it before it released, so we've hashed over the hardware, and I don't think there's anything more that can be said about TouchWiz. This is a Galaxy S phone, after all.

But something as potentially innovative as the "Ticker" needed some attention, and we're about to dive head-first into in on Verizon's newest Samsung phone.  Hit the break to see what this Ticker is all about, and what it can do for you, for Android, and for the world.

$5 app promises to put LTE on your Android smartphone today! (Not really)

33

We kind of didn't even want to draw any attention to this app, this $4.99 waste of time, but figured in the interest of public service ... So there's "4G LTE Upgrade" app that popped up in the Android Market today, just after Verizon announced its 4G data (and not smartphone data) will be flipped on come Sunday. The app promises you can get 4G early, which of course, you can't.  It also says to wait a day or two if it doesn't work at first. And you'll keep waiting.

So go ahead and drop $5 on it if you really, really, really want a 4G icon in your notification bar. Or, do what I did and buy it, refund it and mark the SOB as malicious. Download links are NOT after the break.

Samsung unveils new NFC chips destined for mobile devices

6

While it shouldn't really come as a surprise since Google CEO Eric Schmidt showed it off during the Web 2.0 Summit. But Samsung today, has finally unveiled its NFC (Near Field Communications) chips with embedded flash. The embedded flash portion could be quite a key factor for Samsung as the NFC technology grows. The embedded flash will allow Samsung to upgrade the firmware on "in market" chips easily rather then have it's users using outdated firmware.

While the chips are not slated to hit mass production until the first quarter of 2011 no mention was made as to when we could see widespread usage of them in mobile devices. But, given the fact the Nexus S will possibly have the technology on board it's likely only a matter of time before we start to see it spread across the Android platform as a whole. Not to mention, many other platforms as well as both RIM and Apple have been rumored to be looking at NFC. Full press release from Samsung is available after the break. [Samsung]

An Android challenge to close out 2010

7

December's here. Just one more month until this year wraps up and the next one begins. And when you stop and think about it, what a year it's been. Started with the launch of Android 2.1 on the Nexus One and is ending with ... Well, we don't quite know, do we? Gingerbread's coming. And, eventually, Honeycomb. We know of a smattering of new hardware waiting in the wings. Dual-core. More tablets. It's gonna be busy, to say the least. And over the next few weeks, we'll be taking a look back at some of the highs and lows of 2010.

Android quick app: Google Reader

62

Google has finally released a proper application for Google Reader -- a must for anyone who lives with RSS (like most of us bloggers do). For those of you new to RSS, it's a method of bringing websites to you, instead of you visiting the website.

The app itself is exactly what we've been looking for. There's proper syncing with Google Reader on the desktop side. The buttons are large and easy to press. Images all appear in-line, and plug-ins should work as well. Feeds and groups are sorted alphabetically at first, or you can change it to match the order on the desktop side.

You can "like" stories, share them through Google Reader or e-mail to someone, take notes, star -- everything you can do on the desktop version. We're more than a little over the moon about this one.

We've got a plethora of screen shots and download links after the break. Huzzah! Thanks, Bill!
