Android's Amazon MP3 app has gotten an update, and if it's a good one if you have any promo or gift codes, which you can now enter to save yourself some dough.

You have to enter the code before you attempt to purchase a song or album. Press the menu button, the enter the settings, and you'll see the "Enter a claim code" option. Not the best way of doing things, but there you go. Update your app now, and there's a download link after the break if you need it.

Taking Android back to school -- apps every student should have

23

It's that time of year again, when young men and women everywhere are packing their things, filling out student loan forms, and heading off to the hallowed halls of higher learning.  While those of us who are shipping off their kids can enjoy the lower utility bills and the freedom to wander naked to the kitchen for a midnight snack, for the students this time of year sure can be stressful.  Maybe we can't help you get the schedule you want, or tell you how to cope with that certain professor who let's you know "nobody gets an A in my class," but we can suggest an application or two that you might find useful.

Go get your microwave from student services, get your password from IT, and follow after the break to see Android Central's staff application picks for back to school!

T-Mobile G2 testing ROM leaked

14

Waiting for the G2 to release on T-mobile and feeling impatient?  If you're into the hackery fun, you can download and check out what looks to be the leaked engineering test ROM right now.  The ROM is Android 2.2 (Froyo), has a HSDPA 14.4M + HSUPA 5.76M radio file, and is running the 2.6.32 Linux kernel.  You can grab the leaked file here (site's in Han Chinese, use Google translate FTW).  Looks like the G2 will be the hackers dream that it's little brother the G1 was, and everyone involved should love that! T-Mobile HTC G2 (or maybe the Glacier) visits the FCC

1

The documentation for a new device from HTC has passed through the hands of the discerning FCC seeking approval. The device was filed under model code PC10100 and supports AWS 3G, which is the radio frequency known only to T-Mobile USA, accompanied by the ever-so-common 802.11n WiFi band. It’s most likely that this is the G2, (aka Vision) which is nearing its debut. If that happens to be the case, the HSPA+ support mentioned in the documentation is finalized, if it’s not the Vision, then this, "PC10100" just might be the mysterious, multi-core “Glacier.” [FCC via Engadget]

Motorola Droid 2 rooted

2

Well, that didn't take too long. The Motorola Droid 2 (read our full review) has been rooted. We're not quite in one-click territory yet -- you're going to need to do a tiny bit of command line work, but really nothing more scary than following directions and copying and pasting. And that's not so bad, now is it? [XDA Developers via Android Community]

SE Xperia X8 passes the FCC, user manual available

4

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 has passed the testing of the FCC, and information (including the user manual and a mess of pictures) is available for your viewing pleasure.  While the prototype looks a little different from the polished glamor shot when the X8 was announced by SE, the specs remain the same -- and that's a concern.  The hardware is passable for a mid-range phone, but Android 1.6 is soo last decade (or at least last year).  It's still worth a look. Here's a direct link to the user manual and here's one to the pictures. (Warning: They're PDFs.) [FCC via Engadget]

Not to be left out, Samsung Captivate now only one cent on Amazon

13

Oh, jealousy is a beautiful thing. After seeing its T-Mobile brother, the Vibrant, going for a mere penny last week, the Samsung Captivate (read the full review here) has seen its price slashed down to a single cent as well. The phone does require a new two-year contract with AT&T if you had any doubt.  No word on how long this deal will be good for, but we would suggest pulling the switch sooner rather than later. Case Review: Talon hard shell case for the Evo 4G

11

The Talon hard shell case is a very slim and attractive way to protect your Evo 4G. Machined from a single piece of metal hard plastic, the Talon case fits snugly, yet is easy to put on your Evo, as well as remove.  Very lightweight, this case adds no bulk yet completely covers the rear of your phone, keeping things protected and scratch-free.  The graphics -- in this case the Cupid's Arrow -- are screened onto the surface, under the final finishing coat.  It's not going to rub off. Want more? Let's continue after the break.
