Xiaomi's VP of global operations Hugo Barra was on hand to announce the Mi 4i, the Chinese vendor's latest flagship. The device features a 5-inch full-HD display, 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 SoC (the second-generation variant) with eight Cortex A53 cores: four high-performance cores clocked at 1.7GHz and four energy-efficient cores at 1.1GHz, 2GB DDR3 RAM, 16GB internal memory, 13MP Sony/Samsung sensor with a f/2.0 lens (the same sensor used in the Mi Note) and two-tone flash, 5MP shooter at the front with a wide-angle lens, dual-SIM connectivity, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac and a massive 3,120mAh battery.
On the software side of things, the Mi 4i is the first device to offer an Android 5.0-based version of Xiaomi's custom ROM, MIUI 6. Xiaomi demoed an India-specific feature called Visual IVR that lets users automate IVR prompts. MIUI — which has over 100 million users around the world — now has support for six Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.
Barra mentioned that the fully laminated OGS Corning Concore display offers the same level of protection as Gorilla Glass 3. The display has an NTSC 95% color gamut, with Xiaomi taking a dig at the iPhone 6 with its 72% color gamut. Another display-focused feature — called Sunlight Display — selectively adjusts brightness to preserve detail when viewing the screen in broad daylight. Coming to the camera, Xiaomi has added a selfie timer, and tweaked its Beautify feature that was introduced in the Mi 4. Beautify uses filters to automatically enhance photos.
The Mi 4i will be available in five color variations: black, white, orange, blue and pink. The phone's unibody design is constructed out of soft touch plastic and comes with a matte finish at the back. The device itself is 7.8mm thick and weighs in at 130 grams.
The pricing of the device is very aggressive at ₹12,999, which comes out to around $205. Mi 4i goes on sale starting April 30, with Flipkart the launch partner. Xiaomi has announced that the device will be made available across all of its retail platforms, including its own website in India.
