What you need to know

  • The Xiaomi Mi Band 5 is now official.
  • It comes with an upgraded 1.2-inch OLED display, a magnetic charging dock, and more accurate fitness tracking.
  • The Mi Band 5 has been priced at 189 yuan ($27) for the non-NFC variant in China.

Xiaomi today launched the Mi Band 5 in China, its latest budget fitness band and a direct successor to the fantastic Mi Band 4 (via XDA Developers). The latest fitness band from Xiaomi comes with an updated design and several key upgrades that make it an even more impressive wearable than its predecessor, at least on paper.

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 comes with a 1.2-inch OLED display, which is 20% larger than the one on the Mi Band 4. Along with a bigger display, the wearable offers over 100 new animated watchfaces from popular animated series such as Hatsune Miku, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The budget fitness band also comes with 11 sports modes with upgraded "professional" sensors for improved tracking, a built-in barometer, NFC support, improved sleep tracking, and 5 ATM water resistance. Some of the other highlights include a new magnetic charging dock, remote camera control functionality, and menstrual cycle tracking for female users.

The Mi Band 5 will be going on sale in China from June 18 in two variants. While the one without NFC support has been priced at 189 yuan ($27), the NFC variant will cost 229 yuan ($32). Xiaomi hasn't announced any plans of launching the budget fitness band in markets outside China yet, but we expect it to make its global debut sometime later this year.

The Mi Band 4 may no longer be Xiaomi's latest and greatest budget fitness band, but it still remains a great buy. It features a 0.95-inch color OLED display, 5ATM water resistance, continuous heart-rate tracking, and delivers up to 20 days of battery life under normal use.
