Sony to bring Lollipop to 'entire Xperia Z series'

Sony Mobile has announced the first stage of its Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade plans, with a promise to bring the newly-announced OS version to the "entire Xperia Z series." That includes the following devices...

Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.

Sony says the Google Play edition Z Ultra will be first with the Lollipop update, and promises more details soon. The other devices listed will begin updating from early 2015, starting with "the core Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series."

  • Yess :-).
  • Wait wait wait... 2015? It's going to take THAT long even for the Xperia Z3? You disappoint me, Sony.
  • I hope your being sarcastic.....
2015 is roughly 2 months away and 5.0 hasn't even been released yet
  • 2015 is only 2 1/2 months away, my friend. :)
  • Its only 2 months you idiot.
    First devices with L.
    Nexus 6 mid november.
Nexus 9 early november. So other devices wont even get L until at least late November/December.
  • Calling someone an idiot only makes YOU look bad. It's seriously unnecessary. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Look at the person whose Visa was declined telling people what makes them look bad. <3
  • Remember the final L code hasn't even dropped yet, and probably won't until the N6 ships in November.
  • +1 Posted via Nexus 7 2013 or verizon Galaxy S5 or maybe one day through my moto 360
  • Lollipop only sounds reasonable judging from other OS names. AC App on SGS3
  • HTC also promises 90 days update, and that will also be early 2015 mate. Sorry, not sorry.
  • Exaggerated?? Lol
  • Be happy our Z Series will get the update. Sure it's quite a long time. The guys from Sony need to test the new version first for their Sony Edition Z Series. That'll take some time. Maybe they will finish this early and you'll get the update sooner.
  • Thanks AC, my Twitter timeline is being bombarded with pointless Apple news at the moment then I see this.
  • This makes me feel better about purchasing the Xperia Z3v next week. :)
  • I'm still deciding whether or not I should purchase it. I know the Nexus 6 is larger than I'd like a phone to be, but idk if I can pass up a Nexus on Verizon. However, with everything it's packing in a smaller package, the Z3v still looks like a solid choice.
  • Same here, I'm on tmobile though, the Z3v looks cool but it will be $120/mo and tmob $96/mo with 3gb but I don't like how tmobile is only getting the black z3... nexus 6 looks good but might be too big, will wait its release and go to the store to hold them both in my hands and pick one, only if the camera is good on the nexus will i be interested.
  • It's really a Z2 :shh:
  • Well it's shinny, smaller by a few mm, lighter and has image stabilization.
  • Z2 was shiny too Posted via Nexus 7 2013 or verizon Galaxy S5 or maybe one day through my moto 360
  • BUT it doesn't have PS4 remote play. That, IMHO, is the coolest gimmick ever :D Sony Xperia Z2
    Nvidia Shield
  • Yes! I forgot about that one, huuuge plus. Wife can finally watch her shows and I can still play my games hehe no more fighting
  • Mmmmmm... I suppose you aren't an experienced Android User, I have PS4 remote play in my Z2, just took it from the Z3's system dump. Maybe you should take a look over XDA forums and get used to really use the powerful smartphone you have. Rooting is the first step.
  • It really is Posted via Nexus 7 2013 or verizon Galaxy S5 or maybe one day through my moto 360
  • well I only have a Nexus 4 right now so I'm planning on updating this month, Z3, G3 or N6.
I like my N4 but I spilled bubble bath on the screen and since, when I swipe up or down on the screen it thinks it's a tap so I keep clicking on random things on the screen, like liking articles I don't even like on Facebook lol and the phone is getting a bit slow too
  • Sweet! Just got my Z3 compact on monday. Hopefully its very early 2015.
  • How do you like it so far? Is the battery life as good as all the reviews say? Posted from my Nexus 5, behind seven proxies
  • I gave it some power at 19% after 6 days and 6 hrs. Phoned daily, many messages, smartband sync, mails, calendar, music and playing around. stamina was activated...
  • Not trying to state that anyone is lying, but that can't be true! Did you mean to say 1 day 6 hrs or 2 days and 6 hrs?
  • Well, it may be true. My atrix used to last for 4 days with regular usage (messaging, browsing, calling, listening to music for at least 3 hrs per day) and my friends wouldn't believe me. Sony has made great advances with battery in Z-series so I would believe 4-5 days of battery life (specially after I watched 5 episodes on mkv at 720p on my friends xperia tablet z using software emulation due to lack of codecs and the battery going down by only 3%)
  • He had it on stamina mode.
  • The battery life is much better than my iPhone 5S.
I consider myself a heavy user and still have around 50% left at the end of the day. And that's without charging in my car which I had to do with my iPhone if I wanted to make it till I got home. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Coming from a Moto X, I was almost dead getting out of work. Now I have a minimum of 55% battery when I get out. And I use it more than my Moto X. For a speed comparison, Timely loads in 2 seconds, where it would take almost 10 seconds on my Moto X. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Timely takes me 2 seconds to load on my Moto X.... Posted via the Android Central App
  • Are you running ART? That's probably why it's faster for you. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Your moto sounds like it was messed up. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I had just reset it a week earlier before I got the the Z3c and Timely had always been slow to load . My wife has a Moto X and it's always seemed much faster than mine. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I just want them to put microSD functionality back on Android with their version of Lollipop, assuming Google is stubborn in correcting past stupid decisions.
  • +1 I know someone is going to respond and say but but they did it for security and it's worth the huge inconvenience Posted via Nexus 7 2013 or verizon Galaxy S5 or maybe one day through my moto 360
  • Good news Sony!! Posted via the Android Central App
  • Definitely making me feel good about getting the Z3 soon. Posted via Android Central App w/G2
  • Yep me too Posted via the Android Central App
  • Nice, i wasn't sure my original xperia Z would get updated, so that's good news. Guess I'll be sticking with the old girl for a while yet. Posted via Android Central App
  • Nice. Go Sony. Didn't imagine it would be that many devices. You're next Samsung unless LG beats you. Posted via Android Central App
  • Making alot of devices is a good and bad thing for people Posted via Nexus 7 2013 or verizon Galaxy S5 or maybe one day through my moto 360
  • Oh Sony, keep the awesome flowing!
  • Waiting...
  • What shout xperia s anddroid updates??
  • Only the Z series phones are getting updated. Posted via the Android Central App
  • it is EOL quite some time ago/
  • Coming from a company like Sony, I find it to be BS. Posted via Android Central App
  • Why? They've been about the best at updating their devices the last 12 months. Other than Motorola and Nexus of course. If this was 2012, I'd agree, but it's a totally different Sony these days. Posted via my Mate 2 :)
  • Maybe he doesn't realize that the mobile phone carriers are the ones that delay the update... Posted via Android Central App
  • 2013 would be long for my new Z3! Posted via the Android Central App
  • Good guy Sony.
  • This just made my day. My Z3c will be happy
  • Wow, makes the GPE Sony Z Ultra look like even more of a bargain @ $335 shipped no tax. Posted via the Android Central App
  • también sera para Z1 y el Z1 compact
  • C6802
  • Android L for you, and you, and you and you! Android L for everyone!
Actually I don't know why wouldn't they give Android L for all Z series, since all of them have an excellent performance and enough of what Android L would require.
  • They ARE giving it to all Z series. Posted via the Android Central App
  • He knew that; he was stating it rhetorically, to mean, " it wouldn't have made sense for Sony to do otherwise." Posted from my Sony Z Ultra GPe via Android Central App
  • U should have probably read the article before posting your comment.smh
  • And people complain that Sony doesn't give out the latest android software fast enough. ITS NOT SONYS PROBLEM!!! ITS THE PHONE COMPANY THAT YOU'RE ON THAT DELAYS THE UPDATES!!! Posted via Android Central App
  • i have a z3 compact on the way...only phone out there that is not a beast!!! IDK i still may get the nexus lol
  • Yay for my Z2! Posted via Android Central App
  • Sony could use a better naming scheme, quite the commitment to updates tho. I know they've been releasing phones every six months and everything, but still, there's probably phones on the list older than the Moto X (2013) and Moto's definitely not updating anything older than that.
  • woo hoo z ultra gpe is the first !!!!
  • i have xperia z2 , and i dont have update at kitkat 4.4.4 :(
  • Neither :| However, it's just a small update that's less than 10MB, so we're not exactly missing out on much :P Anyway, we're getting Lollipop (eventually) :D Sony Xperia Z2
    Nvidia Shield
  • And I was on the fence about selling My Z3 Compact... Lol Posted via the Android Central App
  • Looks like I'll be keeping my Tablet Z!
  • Me too :) Posted via Android Central App
  • The number of likes of this article on Facebook is blowing my mind... 15000 likes! Never saw that before!! Well done AC !! Posted via Android Central App
  • I'm happily surprised Sony is updating phones that are considered "old". Forget the "18 Month" rule!
  • Sony will be focusing on Z series.. So even it's old devices it will get updates with no problem due to their devices got high specs.. :)
  • Its a great news for atlast i can update my Xperia tablet and my Xperia z 1, i am planning to buy the new xperia z3 tablet soon........
  • Nice for Google
  • Happy to hear this news and awaiting Sony's attack on Material Designed Walkman, Movies and Album apps.
  • That's commitment.
I'm looking at you LG and Optimus G. Posted via Android Central App
  • Great news Sony ! but wait, what ? on 2015 ? ;( I can't wait to experience android lollipop on my Sony Z1. I've been waiting since I found out that android lollipop will release Oct 1. ;( Can you make it nxt month ? hehe, I really cant wait to upgrade my phone . ILOVESONY <3
  • Really hope they bring it to the Xperia M2 as well, as the phone isn't even a year old, and it would be able to run the update just fine.
  • Happy to be on the Xperia bandwagon, I've had my xperia zl for more than a year now and still in mint condition and with the latest kitkat. I don't mind waiting as long as it comes. Thanks Sony!
  • Still rocking the ZL. Honestly, it is an underrated device. Capable phone with small bezels. Posted via Android Central App
