HTC One Remix shown off again, this time with Verizon branding

HTC One Remix

HTC One Remix

We've had a couple not-so-clear looks at the so-called HTC One Remix, but this latest render clears things up a bit and adds the wrinkle of Verizon branding. Coming by way of @evleaks, this render of the HTC One Remix also comes with the explanation that this is just an HTC One Mini 2 (as we guessed). Verizon has taken advantage of the now-empty bottom bezel above the BoomSound speaker to paint its logo, of course, and aside from what's potentially under the blurred-out screen this is looking like the One Mini 2 we know.

Here's an early look at Android Wear on a preproduction LG G Watch

LG G Watch

Details on the yet-to-be-released LG G Watch are light at the moment, but at least one person has had a quick look at a preproduction model at the LG G3 launch event in London. As you can see in the above video, this is very much an incomplete product. (Our German isn't very good, but we hear the word "beta" more than a few times.) While it doesn't show off a dramatically different body than we've seen in LG's curated press shots (this is the "Champagne Gold" model), we do get a good idea for the size and shape of the G Watch.

The body looks to be primarily plastic, with a standard watchband style that doesn't look unlike what we're used to seeing on the original Pebble. A set of metal contacts on the back of the watch will be used for charging, but beyond that we really can't take much away from non-final hardware.

Samsung Chromebook 2 13-inch

Forget Samsung's previous Chromebook efforts, this is how it should've been doing things all along

Following nearly a month delay, we finally have our hands on the brand new 13-inch Samsung Chromebook 2. Samsung is going for a premium look and price (at least among Chromebooks) with this model, packing a new Exynos 5 Octa ARM processor, 4GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and 1920 x 1080 display along with a Chromebook industry-topping $399 price tag.

With a new range of inexpensive, powerful and (most importantly) fanless Intel-based Chromebooks on the horizon from a variety of competing manufacturers, Samsung has its work cut out for it with this new pair of ARM-based Chromebooks that still have to shake the stigma of poor performance and battery life.

This Samsung Chromebook 2 is a brand new device, not to be compared with its first couple of rounds of ARM Chromebooks. It's sleek, powerful, well-built and has a beautiful display. Only time will tell how the ARM processor holds up with performance and battery life, but our first impressions are pretty strong. Read along and see our first look at the Samsung Chromebook 2 (13-inch).

Scientists now know why rechargeable batteries go bad, and may know how to fix them

Batteries

Batteries

Sweet, sweet science is on its way to finding a cure for how lithium-ion batteries (like the one in your phone) lose their ability to hold a charge over time. Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley, Brookhaven, and Stanford have found a pattern to the erosion that happens at both anode and cathode ends of the battery, when previously it was assumed the erosion was uniform. The salt that forms at the anode side and the metallic erosion on the cathode side both latch onto microscopic imperfections, kind of like how a water droplets latch onto a piece of dirt to begin forming rain or a snowflake.

LG's latest flagship handset continues its tradition of back-mounted keys

LG broke the mold last year with the G2, switching from the tried-and-true side-mounted power and volume keys and putting its buttons on the back. And it worked pretty well, allowing the company to slim down its bezels while keeping the main keys relatively accessible. (Though that said, we were less enamored with the inferior design that featured on the Verizon G2.)

Back buttons quickly became a signature LG feature, arriving on devices like the G Flex and G2 Mini, and they're back on the company's 2014 flagship, the LG G3.

Check out our video after the break.

Android Device Manager app now lets guests temporarily track their lost phones

Android Device Manager app now lets guests temporarily track their lost phones

Android Device Manager

Android Device Manager

Android Device Manager is an extremely useful app for tracking and finding your lost or stolen phone, and now you can use it to give a friend a helping hand when their phone is lost as well. The latest update to the app gives you a "Guest" option in the account switcher menu, which then lets a friend log into their Google Account and track their Android devices. Once logged in they can track, ring and erase their phones just as if they were using the ADM website or an installed app on another one of their devices.

Having temporary access to someone else's Android device to track a lost or stolen device could mean the difference between finding it and never seeing it again, so we applaud Google's inclusion of this feature in the latest release. You can download the Android Device manager app at the Play Store link above — it may just save your (or someone else's) phone one day.

Unearthed on the Shield

Semaphore Studios has released Semaphore's new title for Android, Uearthed: Trail of Ibn Battuta (which I'll be calling Unearthed from here on out). The very first thing you need to know is that they have done what we rarely see, and that is release an Android version that's equal to the version you can buy for your PlayStation. That tells me they "get" mobile, and any game studio that gets mobile has my immediate attention.

T-Mobile merger with Sprint looks more likely as Softbank and Deutsche Telekom agree on sale

Softbank is making an end-run around concerns about a merger of Sprint and T-Mobile US by instead hitting up T-Mobile's parent company Deutsche Telekom. As reported by Japanese news agency Kyodo, Japan-based Softbank has entered into an agreement with Germany-based Deutsche Telekom to buy the latter's ownership stake in US carrier T-Mobile. The US Federal Communications Commission and Department of Justice have expressed their concerns about the potential for such consolidation in the US cellular market, and the move by Softbank would likely end up still being heavily scrutinized.

The end result (a Sprint/T-Mobile merger) would likely still be the same, though this move might bring the two companies as separate entities under the same umbrella corporation first. Softbank bought Sprint last year for $21.6 billion, and they've been vocal about their desire to also buy T-Mobile. Sprint, too, has been pursuing T-Mobile, though it's more likely that Softbank's even deeper pockets would be better suited to such an acquisition.

HTC One

Following recent rumors of a plastic HTC One being in the works, HTC China has taken the wraps off this new model with a post on Weibo linking to a promotional site for the phone. Besides the change in materials, you're looking at familiar chips and software, a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor and HTC's BoomSound-based audio. Despite the high-end internals, the chassis looks a little more like last year's HTC One, the M7, than this year's offering.
